Default outboard allignment

I have ? on outboard motor allignment, when I bought the boat the motors were 1 1/4" toe out (prop shafts out, noses in) steering was very hard at high speed, reduced it to 1/2" steering is better, what is ideal for best performance? should they be dead straight? my manual said 1/4" to 3/4" so i put it in the middle, what is the function of toe out? is it driveability or handling??

Good question.

I am curious as well, but I don't think many people on this board have outboards.
