We were talking about that yesterday when I was at Precision looking at his motor. He would definitely make more power. My advice to him is to finish the boat get the motor running and if you feel the need for more power the after a season pull it out and make some changes. But for now just get that dam thing running.I keep telling him that I will have a new motor before his hits the water.I told him why dont you give me that motor and I will use it cause he never will.

Rob,
Are you going to paint them or leave em black? I was just reading back at all the blend work you did on the heads. I did the same to my harley, its amazing how much power can be had just by cleaning them up, not taking away too much material though. I left my intake ports with a satin finish to help atomize the fuel, but its NA so it needed it, forced inductions needs smooooth, Looks great though cant wait for spring!! I also have a 71 conv Chevelle for sale, no motor or trans in it, know anyone looking?I'll let it go for 7k...Rob

I wish I had come up with a custom color. But just going with black .I think I will later change the valve covers to something like Fred [Trick Marine ]did on his :D . I figure with all the polished alum and steel braided hose it will look ok. :drink:Thats the way I did my Scarab blower motor ,Here's a picture of it

Rob They tell me they still want the Ruff intake port for atomization. I haven't heard different yet?

Keep the Chevelle and finish it . You'll have fun with a convertible.

those are sweet, fred's covers look awesome, and you can just send them out have it done and switch them in a couple hours. The black will look great as well, the small atomization tricks work, did in my bike, I'm only 10 over with wiseco's and doing as much HP and more TQ than most 96 inchers and some 103's.
I'm thinkin about sending the chevelle to Troy Trepanier, I have done the chassi, its all poly with discs, I have a 355 and a 383 blower motor on stands that would really make it scream. I like what he did with Chicayne and the fastback mustang. Just wonder about the 80-100 k that it would take. I did have a blast in it, but I own 2 companies and time is tough, my 9 year old daughter comes first and she digs harleys and boats. Its not hurting anything by sitting in the garage, its heated and A/C just hate seeing it sit ya know??:(

Oh and rough for atomization is right for blown, unless injectors are at port, like fuel rail. carbs need rough. but like everything else, depends who ya talk too...Rob

I just got thru porting the Whipple intake .The ports on the heads and intake are lining up real good !! I took out all the sharp edges and rounded it all up.Probably a waste of time on a Blower but any thing to help the restriction.Hopefully with all this work the boost #'s will be lower than they say with the pulleys that come with the kit ?

More picks :D No cutting done

Prob in late april ? I am now trying to match up the intake with the heads :( .Things are coming together. I have been taking picks of every thing along the way..Its going slower than I predicted . i am probaly being too anal about the little things .

Looks like World products make the Intake for Whipple . I have been cutting all week on heads and intake .

Like Richie Zul told me the other day I sould of bought some heads and would be allready done . But whats time to a monkey :drink: I will next time

I like the dual inter-cooler picture from above. Do you have rights to the design? I can't imagine the amount of time you have in the heads. I was real happy with the Dart 308 Heads.

When its all done, You will be happy with the results. I really like the look of the Whipple. Second only to a roots blower in looks, probably better in performance & reliability. No scoop needed which is a plus.

Keep the pictures coming, and if you have any spare time make a few posts in the other section.

You were right, The ECU will need adjustment. I sent them to Mark today. If I could set the idle up to 900RPM it might of cleared up.

It ran but the transom was pretty black. Oh well. I was planning on doing that anyway. I just needed to experiment.

I had the machine shop ck all the clearance's on the crank and mains , and the new rods come on the tight side so we put them in the middle of spec .

I started out plastic gauging it and it was not coming out right . Don't know why. But I bought a new Dial bore gage . I already had the snap gages and Mic's. So I could make sure everything was good on the bottom end . The rods came up to .0027- .0032 One crank was on the small side so I had to play around with the different bearings on that one .

The crank came out to .003 and .0035 rear.Everything on the bottom end went together good :D

Whats up Mike ? I used the 10778 with the Moroso slip[weld]on pick up for a 7 inch deep pan. The pick up to oil pan clearance was good.the pictures are on page 4 of this tread..Once I get it in the boat i will know what the pressures will be .the Dyno's gage was not accurate..

I have been real busy finishing this project and I have been taking a lot of pictures and I will post the rest of the build up soon.I was surprised at the #'s :eek:Now I am Wishing I had speedmasters :( and it Looks like I will need bigger props than I already bought.

I am trying to be running in 2 weeks .Just waiting on parts .I will post the rest of the info after I get it running.

Thanks

I got to putting the second motor together and saw a scratch in the cylinder wall .When I tore the motors down I marked everything so everything could go back in the same hole .The scratch wasn't to bad and nothing I could do now . So I looked at that piston for that hole and what scratched the wall is stilln the piston
The machine shop was suppose to clean the piston. I double ck ed :D

One thing i might do next time is tighten up the ring gap just a little.A few people said I set it to loose .being at .030 and .025 .I am just use to running the NOS motors and have butted rings before .O figured that 2-3 thou wouldn't hurt?

Re: Hustler 500efi engine tear down & Build Up

Before I put the short block and the heads together I mocked it up to see if the intake lined up to the ports and the china rail was off , Remember the block had be cut to much :( . I used valve spring shims to get an idear on how much to cut the intake .It was around .070 something that needed cutting . I ended up cutting it twice just to get it as closes as I could as to not to go to far  . The roof and floors were real close to alinging up . the rest I had to blend in .The angle on the intake face was out about .007. I figure the gasket would compres some and after cutting the china rail I got enough for a good bead for it . That all came together real good :D

Also The Whipple intake has a few burs from the factory machining and taped holes that could of flaked off into the motor. So if ya are doing a stock straight bolt on Whipple set up ,look at it . There was some ridges in there that I dressed up, abd radiused all I could . prob a waste of time ?

After bolting it all up I blended all the ports on the intake to the heads .I trimed the gaskets at the same time also. Made it all smooth. I #ed each piece even the gaskets so they would all line up on final assembly.

heres a few more picks :D
