I am looking for suggestions on what would be the best headers or manifolds to use with a twin BB 540 set up that makes 650hp & 700lb. It is going in a staggered 42 fountain that weighs about 10k. I have had previous experience with Gil manifolds which seemed to work well and were not finicky as to broken welds as I have heard stainless headers are prone to be.

I have two pair of Stainless Marine GEN III manifolds, risers, and tail pipes out of a 43 Black Thunder with side by side with transmissions. If you are interested PM me and I will e-mail pics to you. I need 3K for both pair. Joe Murray

Take your time and shop around. Ocean Performance has several choices.
Stainless marine, Gil, and also the Power Flows made by Impco.
Once you have your new costs clear in your head you can make an educated decision on buying used. I do run the Impco Power "Flows on a pair of 502 crate motors and they have been trouble free for three years in salt water!
Good Luck

Kirkc,
I also suggest the purchase of the Stainless Marine Gen III. It is a great price.
I would not be as concerned with buying used Stainless Marines as I would buying used tubular style exhaust. In my opinion, the Stainless Marines are the most durable exhaust on the market today. The riser to manifold connection is foolproof.
I have been running a set of the standard Stainless Marine Hi-Torques for the past couple years. I looked for a used set of the Gen III's, for my own 540, with none to be had. I ended up with a pair of Keith Eickert manifolds. Better scavenging than the Gen III's but more susceptible to melt down.

If you are running above 5000 rpm and are concerned with hp then get a pair of Eickert pipes. Probably good for 20+ hp over 5000 vs the other cast brands out there. The higher the rpm the more dramatic the dif. If you have marginal water flow to the motor then you would want to correct it. Same situation with CMI or Stellings. They also need proper cooling.

Stainless Marine Gen 3 w/ 5 inch tail pipes. Took of the Imco PowerFlow and bolted those on. Had to go up 2 more inches in prop and put bigger jets in (540 9:1 motor).Great exhaust. Keith Eickerts and Gil Big Guns good too.
