Piston oilers sound like a great idea for supercharged engines. Keeping the piston cool should help delay detonation all things equal? What about coating the piston? If you do cool the pistons enough will you reduce the amount that they expand and have to change clearances? Who has done this on a supercharged engine and seen increased life and/or detonation protection? Would you talk about it if you had success in this area?

Tomcat did yall get the IAC figured out Wensday? I had a bad one also on the dyno. Weird

Re: Piston Sprayers
Hi Rob:
We tried replacing the IAC but the engine still stalled going into gear. This is not on the engine that Mark had on the dyno; it goes into gear perfectly. So Mark told them to scan the good engine and duplicate the setting. I'm sure Victory Marine will get this sorted out.
Mark did a good job for us. You may leave with a little less HP than your best pulls, but it's hard to argue with his conservative approach. Good luck with your project!

Re: Piston Sprayers
This month's Hot Rod, that venerable source of knowledge, has an article on the new Caddy Northstar engine. Intercooled Roots blower makes 440 HP. There is a very good photo of the piston sprayers they used. Caddy engineers claim cooling the pistons reduced detonation tendency enough to allow a few more degrees of timing. Check it out.
Thanks Bill, it's an aggravating little problem because the other engine is perfect. Mark gave some more instructions to try this morning and they're going back into the water again today.

Re: Piston Sprayers
What do they coat the pistons with ??? What are the pros and cons of doing this and does it help in keeping it cool...and who does it..

Re: Piston Sprayers
Byrdman,The layman's term for the process of piston coating is known as "ceramic coating".The piston dome and /or skirts only can be coated. The process is available as an option from several of the piston manufactures, plus others. The process is thought to be greatly improved over time from when it was started. It has been said, early on the material may have flaked off.One may expect the quench to be effected, plus improved temperature and detonation control. The life expectancy of the coating will be effected by crank to rod ratio not dissimilar from uncoated pistons. However,in my opinion, the piston sprayers are part of that package.
