Default Masking tape numbers on the dash?

What are these? Ive noticed them in about 4 of the race boats Ive looked at. Theyre stuck to the dash or the side panels.. numbered like 1-10 in little pieces..

Always wondered what that was..

It is a well known fact that as a group, boat racers can not
count. We pull off a piece of tape each time we pass the start
finish line to keep track how many laps we have done. When
there is no more tape, the race is over, although a lot of
teams will do an extra lap to be sure!

I have seen some high teck guys do it with velcro,
and can reuse the numbers.
