Detroit MI-Windsor Can. races?
I remember going there as a kid for the races. And I have been curious about this for a while. Port Huron and the city of St Clair host good races on the St Clair river. Why not the Detroit river? I run both often and the Detroit river is rougher and more fun. With the riverwalk in Det and the parks on the Canadian side it would make for great spectator viewing.
What does it take to put an event on like this? And has it been considered recently? We have the big three here and some other big name players that used to sponsor boats. We host the Gold Cup for the hydros too.
I think it could/would be a great event.
Your thoughts???

Hi Jay!
The Ontario Offshore Powerboat Association has tried to get an Offshore Powerboat Race in Windsor on the Detroit River since 2009. Before that time there were a couple of other attempts by others to bring in a Offshore Powerboat Race but all have failed. Reason's, there are more then one but the main reason is finding the sponsors with money but politics also played a big part of it. There has never been any doubt that the Detroit River between Windsor and Detroit would be an awesome spectator viewing race course , where spectators on both side of the river could see the entire race course. We spent a lot of time trying to bring in a race but with out money/sponsors and a Mayor who doesn't want to see an Offshore Powerboat Race here because of his own agenda. 2009 the Red Bull Air Race cost 3 million dollars, 2010 the Mayor got 5 million dollars from the Ontario Government to hold the Red Bull Air Races on the Detroit River and 5 million for 2011. The Red Bull Air Races were cancelled by Red Bull due to some accidents and one of the pilots was killed in a crash. We asked the Ontario Government and the Mayor if we could use some of the 5 million dollars given to the City of Windsor for the Red Bull Air Races and we were told that it had to be used for the event it was given for and if not used it has to be returned. We pointed out to the Mayor, the Downtown BIA and Tourism Bureau that it cost 5 million dollars for one weekend to hold a Red Bull Air Race and we could of held an Offshore Powerboat Race that was just as exciting as the Red bull Air Race for the next 10 years for the price of Red Bull Air Race for one weekend. It became very evident that the Mayor of Windsor pulled all the strings in this city and if he didn't want it no one was going to go against him. Instead the Mayor and City Council have just spent 50 million dollars to build a new Aquatic Centre Downtown and Windsor and Detroit are bringing in the Children's Games to Windsor in 2013, cost in the millions. The Mayor and the City of Windsor has just won their bid to host the 2016 FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships by beating out Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates. The cost to host this event 2 - 10 million dollars. I have often heard the Mayor say that Windsor has a great waterfront and we do, as well as Detroit. So what could be more appropriate then hold an Offshore Powerboat Race on the Detroit River in front of the Motor City, "The Motor City Offshore Powerboat Race".

Back a few years ago when the Detroit Gold Cup Races had the OFFSHORE Powerboats Racing there like, Reliable Carriers, Miss Geico, JD BYRIDER, Motley Crew, Warpaint and a few others, was great to watch. As we all know the Detroit Gold Cup has been running for over a hundred years and has a ton of history and it is for Hydroplane racing. The Detroit River is a totally different race course, perfect for Offshore Powerboat Racing, where spectators from Detroit and Windsor could view the entire race from both sides of the Detroit River and for Free. We believed that it could be one of the greatest races course around where the race boats could race along boat sides of the Detroit River and close to the shoreline where spectators would be packed on both sides of two great waterfronts , ideal for spectator viewing. This is a diamond in the ruff which hasn't been tapped into although back in the 1980's there was an APBA race held there but it was never advertised properly, was held during the work week at around noon and had some legends racing like Al Copeland SR. and I beleive Betty Cook, just poorly organized. Hopefully one day there will be an Offshore Powerboat Race held on the Detroit River between Detroit, MI and Windsor, ON (International Offshore Powerboat Race) and in front of the Motor City. All we need is the money from sponsors to put it on. Got any?

It is a perfect venue. The river is wide and usually rough and the shorelines are unobstructed. Both cities have fine dining, nightlife and casinos. Penske or one of the big 3 or Quicken loans would be a good place to start for sponsorship.
