Single Outboard Race Class
Now that the seasons are winding down and only the World Championships left for all the Sanctioning bodies. I felt now would be a good time to try to plug a Single Outboard Engine Class once again.
Consider it P6, Performance Outboard, F(Like it was once called before or something else for that matter. Have it for boats smaller than 25' in length powered by one single outboard motor. Thus being a true entry level class. Have the boats set up like they were in the US Offshore F class back in the day. there are plenty boats of boats out there to run this class and enough interest in this class as well. Your Looking at someone who will do this as he needs something to blow of his STEAM in. Come on guys make it happen. DPT |
This type of racing is popular in the UK. It would be a great entry level class here in the States. Maybe SBI would be a good organization to promote this class. Especially now that Mercury Racing is going to be running around with them.
|
Would you be an interested party if someone did put something together????
|
No.
I can barely afford pleasure boating let alone racing. |
mabey just change the speed brackets in p class?
5=65 mph 4=75 mph 3=85 mph 2=95 mph 1=105 mph most single outboards run 65 mph.just food for thought. |

Dennis,
I believe the Single Outboard Class was brought up at the meetings last year... Who knows? Maybe not enough publicity, or the bracket idea chased some of the potentials away. I can tell you, there are alot of these boats out of Long Island that I feel would give it a try. They may need to be made aware of the meeting times, and if it means to drop the bracket speeds from that particuliar class in order for them to come out, then maybe it should be given some thought......:eureka: |

Another S. O. B. ;)

Your 100% right about that , They should make a class for them ,P-6 Single outboard 21 to 24 ft. (Alot of outboard boats out there)

Rigth now I am a littlwe tied of with things going on still with my father. I am 100% willing to buy a boat if this happens. Would anyone be willing to give me some help in trying to organize everyone.
Sharkey are you interseted?? How about T2X, he thought this was a good idea last year. I would love for him to help me out with this. Let me know everyone. Email me at [email protected] with suggestions. I would love for us to get involved with the Jersey Boyz with this. Being that most of the people showing interest are from the North east. Heck this is the kind of racing that Nigel Hook started with. Let me know what everyone thinks either on here or in email Dennis P Tracey [email protected] |
Dennis, if you want to make this happen, you need to find support from people that want to race.
Bring 3 other teams with you to the winter meeting and bring your checkbook. You know what they say, Money talks, BS walks. Put your money where your mouth is and get three other teams that have boats to race. I can't speak for OPA but that would be a compelling story. Also, if OPA made the class, you would feel funny being the only one racing in it. So go find some competition for yourself, then ask the question again. |
Gee, I got a couple of Evinrude 300 GTs lying around. Anybody got a hull we can use??????? :D
|
Ron,
The reason for this post was to find if there is enough interest in this type of racing still. I don't have numbers for the anyone so I figured this would be the best place to bring it up and see if anyone is interested. Power of OSO I guess. As far as Showing Money, The only money to be shown is the money I pay for my equipment fees and racing fees. Alos money to purchase and rig the boat I want. I will not pay anyone to make a class for me!!!! Thanx for the response, DPT |
Dennis, I meant, bring your check book to pay the yearly registration fee at the meeting. Nothing more. Geez.
|
Dennis,
I went for a 30 mile run yesterday afternoon in the ocean when the winds turned out of the SE at about 20 knots. I sort of knew something was up when I saw all the fishing boats were coming in so early. I was hoping they were only returning early to watch the World Series... ;) Anyway....it brought my memories back of racing in the 27 ft Magnum in the Atlantic City race in 1988. It has been a long time since being in a race boat let alone being out for pleasure yesterday. I realize I am way out of shape for this and sure feeling the pain today...:( With having a family now, it puts alot of things into perspective... I feel my racing days are over...:( But, whatever I can do from the beach or the computer...:D I will certainly try to get the SOB's out there. Dennis, On my website there is a list of Forums. One is LongIslandExtreme. I haven't been there in awhile, but I will take a look to see what the L I guys are up to. This should be one of the Prime targeted areas. Last year they did have a representitive at the winter meeting. He felt that the bracket racing would not interest the L I guys. They want to be able to go and race as fast as they can without having to worry about avg speeds and max speeds. Just a thought, perhaps lift the bracket rule in that class? Try it for one year?:eureka: T2X knows there are many 21's floating around. There were many racing in the NPBA days... A-Class I believe? I will try to help, if the racing organization wants it... Unless of course this becomes a "Racers Input Only" type thing. Last year I believe it was an "All Interested Parties" input wanted type meeting. Let me know how I may help.....;) |
Thanx for all the info Sharkey. Will have to wait a week to get the ball rolling. Things are not good here at home. Once things settle down I am going to be on this full steam. By any chance do you know anyo0ne you can email or tell about this post to help it get rolling also.
I kind of wished T2X would have chimed in already. He would be a great help. DPT |

If you can get the boats ,you can have a class. If you need help let me know Mike |
Are there any scheduled meetings planned yet for OPA to discuss 2004 classes???
Dennis, I not sure what is going on at home...but I hope all is well.... |
Lets here from all the racers on what they think of this idea of racing??????
|
OPA winter meeting Dec 6 time and place latter
|
Chunks, how fast are these boats? Are you saying they cant run 65-70 mph? I like the idea of more boats but more class's? I say just move some of the P5 guys up to P4 in OPA.
MD Is P2 a dead class in OPA? Maybe ditch that class and make more room for entry level. It seems to my 90-100 mph is dead. Vee bottoms need to much power and cat all go over 100mph. |
Mad Dog,
Right now it is really tough to say how fast any of these boats are being some have not been built and others have not yet been contacted with what size boat and engine package they have. What I believe the consensus is, is to have the outboard powered boats run against themselves rather then against a 27' with a hp500 or better. I don't' feel that many of the boats would be able to run with inboard powered boats in any kind of big water as there is no wait to hold these boats in the water. In flat calm races it would not be a problem but in anything big like Pt Pleasant I think it would be a factor. Although I would want to wait to talk to other potential people who want to run the class as for there input on the idea. Still many things have to be discussed along with getting people to run it. So far if this early on, I have seen alot of interest in this form of racing already for next season just from talk. I want to talk with the Long Island Boyz as well as I know they have an interest in this form of racing also. I am taking all input from everyone as it is all great ideas. We still have a month or so before the meeting to get things organized to present to the board. I just really feel this is a true entry level class, and something like this is needed in the sport again. |
Dennis ...Ron is right.
If there is enough teams that express interest, get them to our kick off meeting to commit. Dont talk about re-building an old boat and not be ready until the last race. Meanwhile theres one boat in that class all season. Its too complicated for the scorekeepers keeping track now. This may only work in OPA. But dont count on seeing any new classes introduced in the other bodies. They have enough problems of their own. Randy, I agree. Some teams need to bump up and GPS needs to be implemented. otherwise all this talk is for nothing. Many teams were very patient this year and we all saw what happened. If some kind of rule enforcement is not in place, no one will be in the right class. and Maybe Max speeds should be increased by 5mph. just a thought. |

Bodyshot,
Thank you for sharing the knowledge you have from owning a boat like we a suggesting to be raced in this class of boats. You thinking that you are wishing that you didn't sell yours???? Maybe You and Vinman could get into this if it evolves. DPT |
Velocity
the 22 was a ton of fun...but I wanted something bigger.....I'll tell ya'.....it was great in the ocean too...Vin & I ran the hell out of it! :D
good luck with the proposed class...anything I can do to help...let me know.... |
Body Shot, at 70 mph who was paddleing faster you or Vin?

Interesting Idea,
tons of 21 superboats on long, Joey Imprescia's 21 with a 300 promax runs hi 90's, many with 2.5's run mid 80's. I think this could be a great entry class.Speed brackets really wouldnt be a problem , none of these boats will be running that fast in open ocean. OPA doesnt need another class but mad dog may have an idea dropping P2 ! Then adding an entry class.I like the idea of adding 5mph too Bruce, and definetely GPS ! Just my 2 cents Jim Capie |

Any ideas yet on a preliminary meeting for potential single O/B racers? Everyone that I have spoken to here on Long Island are in favor. I think a meeting could bring many of them to the table. I will offer my shop (Kryptonite) out here in Eastport as a location if need be.
Another thought! Maybe each local manufacturer building an eligible boat could put one together as a factory sponser boat. (Kryptonite, Superboat, Progression, Activator, Hustler, Intimidator, etc.) That would bring a handful of new product out there as a showing of good faith and committment. Even better if we could get a Long Island race for this class to happen. Kirk |
Kirk,
A "discussional" meeting has been set up for anyone interested in this class. The meeting is 9:30 am 11/16 at "Pit Bull's" shop, 242 Guy Lombardo Ave. Freeport NY. On the "Scream and Fly" site, this has been a hot topic over the past week. Several of us from NJ will be attending. If the interest is there, then we can move forward and approach OPA as a group. Please pass off this meeting date to anyone you've spoken with! Bob G |
Need a map? Freeport. NY Map

Spoke with John Coen of Superboat Powerboats this evening. He and his Son will be attending the meeting Sunday also at Pit Bull's shop. Looking forward to a good discussion on this topic with lots of input from different people. See you all Sunday.
DPT |
Kirk's idea of each LI manufacturer sponsoring (and Godfathering) a boat is a very good one. Don't let him (and the other guys) get away without it!
I think the Boyz at OPA will be glad to have you eggbeaters if enough boats show up. And judging from the amount of traffic that topic gets at Scream&Fly (which is the eggbeater hangout: http://forums.screamandfly.com/forum...threadid=45511 ) there will be TONS of boats at the races! |
I'm sure if OPA was interested and went foward with the outboard class SBi would also be interested in possible doing something.John is always open to new ideas, and always willing to work with the racers. It would hurt to ask and se where it goes.
