1000 islands winter blues
would like to get a thread going with any and all who fancy the 1000 islands region. maybe challenge the lake erie thread :coolcowboy:
hoping to get a crew of guys to go and boat together next summer! post any pics of the area you have! where you stay and deff pics of the boat! ill start it off. our cottage is on a small island on the canadian side in the lost channel. right across from dixon castle. were up there every weekend. and will be running the new 388 next summer as well! went out for a little rip yesterday and had the river to ourselves minus a few boaters and surprising state trooper patrols! http://i66.tinypic.com/2mczpts.jpg http://i67.tinypic.com/2zjm2r6.jpg http://i64.tinypic.com/akaik8.jpg http://i67.tinypic.com/9vdoy9.jpg cheers! |
Cmon 1000 islands folks post up!

We are at Kring Point, next to the state park/Goose Bay. The boat has been in storage for a few weeks already but can't wait to get back up there next summer! Our plan is to go up a few times between May/June and stay on Onieda til end of June, then it's every weekend til the end of the season up north. No place better to be a boater in my opinion, absolutely amazing up there!! Pic of Brockville and the day we picked up the boat.
|
never boated up near brockville or kring point! love to run with you guys next summer!!
|
Kring point is only about 5 miles north of A-Bay, we've never been past Singer Castle and decided to go for a ride one afternoon to see how far Brockville was, and to our surprise it was only about a 15-20 min ride past Singer. Nice ride up there and fairly scenic, next year we'd like to head over to Kingston. I've heard great things about it over there but don't really know where to go once we get there with the boat. We only have a couple friends that are up there as of now so we would love to meet new people! For some reason everyone is stuck on the swamp at home.....
|
im not sure why everyone loves onieda so much!! i hate that lake LOL
we boat around the islands alot! potters is a fun time often with a bunch of performance boaters. theres a few more people from cape and clayton area who are up every weekend that i hang around with! going to kingston isnt a bad run at speed. nice area to cruise for lunch and shopping and night life!!! actually, kingston is a GREAT place for night life!!! hahaha |
I only care for Oneida until mid June, then I'd rather be on the river. Where bouts is the lost channel? We make the loop down the Canadian channel by boaters beach, all the way down to check out Potters and the wind, then to Picton, and back up the American side almost every weekend we are up there. We like to use the boat, not just hang out on it. Sounds like you stay more south towards Clayton? I'd like to take a trip down the Cape Vincent and into the lake as well sometime. Maybe we can make a run over to Kingston next summer? By the way, your thread on the 35 you got seems to have gotten a bit out of hand for a minute.... Any progress on it? Where is your shop if you don't mind me asking, and what else do you do there? Just paint/fiberglass/gelcoat? I'm Jay by the way.
|
the lost channel is the slew of islands on the left right before going under the canadian bridge. yes i have never gone any farther north than singer. i tend to stay more south because i dont know the water north. id love to go though! i dont have the 35 anymore. lost a ton of money on that boat and sold it. i have the 388 hustler in the pics i posted in the OP. my shop is in baldwinsville area. but am breaking ground on a shop in auburn building this winter. i was trying to do an everything shop but realized im the farthest thing away from a mechanic, so yes i stick to paint/gel. cosmetic and structural glass, and custom paint! if youre ever in the area get ahold of me! i have some cool projects in for the winter!! im phil hess. add me on Facebook!
|
Oh I know where you're talking about now. We are only about 5 mins from there. If you head towards Singer, where the Canadian channel and American channel come together basically hang a right til you hit land. As for the 35, I was referring to the fountain that's all busted up in the front. I'll have to stop by sometime and check out the place, always good to know a painter and glass guy! I'm a finish carpenter, so if you ever need anything in that department let me know!

Its going to be a long winter guys! We are out of Cape Vincent and try to get up every weekend we can, although this year we went all over! We spend a lot of time at potters, its the kids favorite hang out. Looking to do so more long rides this year especially if gas stays cheap! We ran from the Cape to Oswego for harborfest which was a blast. Made it up to Ogdensburg this year during Abay run which was cool to see, never been that far up the river. We would like to go some different places next year. That is what is so great about the River, you can go anywhere!

Winter Sucks!
|
was waiting for you to post up vance!!
jay, that boat will start to come to life this winter after i get a few boats in and out. oh gotcha ok i know where youre talking about, i thought you meant krill island or something i forget where it is its way up north on the river. im REAL excited to take some longer trips this year and hopefully well be able to make the cape to oswego run also!! any of yall game for out of town trips this summer? were thinking, tickfaw, buffalo, LOTO, maybe texas outlaw challange or cumberland depending how many weekends i can get my friends to pitch all that gas money!! LOL |
Buffalo is a great weekend and a super event! Its one of the best boating areas I've seen other than the islands!
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...1e&oe=56F4A543 We had a great time at Harborfest and it was a fun ride, something different. I hadn't traveled that far on the big lake since I was a kid! https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...19&oe=56BA4303 The lake Ontario boat and float was also something new and a great time with a bunch of boats! https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...f1&oe=56B0D1E7 The Erie run got a little wild, both on and off the water!!! Thanks to Tim Sharkey for some of his kick @ss photography! We won't post any party pics but there were two crazy nights! https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...cd&oe=56AE7688 |
i guess there are not many OSO'ers up on the river HUH lol
|
Doesn't seem so... All I hear is crickets!
|
Hey guys..Do not own a place on the River at least at this time, but fell in love with the area after renting a house boat from Ed Huck in 1972 and have been coming back ever since. I sometimes keep my 32 Regal down on the river but when its not there I will trailer my 29 Powerquest and launch somewhere on the Canadian side. Been just about everywhere on the River.. and every few years take the seaway to the old port of Montreal. A lot of time in Abay at the Riveredge or at Franks place the Boardwalk. We boat all over but we seem to have a special connection to the River and its people. Thanks for starting the thread ..Mike
|
Welcome Mike! You make us a grand total of 4 now! Doesn't seem like much activity in here but come next summer I know I'll see LOTS of boaters up there.
|
i know it! i see so many people running around up there. though im certain most are not on OSO and its antics.. im basically going to stop at every place with an unused boat on the lift and start talking up the owners and guilt them into using their boats! there is a donzi 35 or 38 ZR that i have only seen leave its lift once. same with a red nortec cat with nxt's. imagine if we could get everyone to run the boats thet just occupy lifts all summer we could have hundreds of boats running!! im sure the OPP wouldnt like that though lol
|
Don't get me going about the OPP that why I start the boat and head toward and stay mostly in US waters .....I think I know the Donzt you are talking about ..At least the next owner will get a boat with low hours.. lol
|
So much harassment. Same with the park police stretch under the American bridge. Luckily we never see any police on Canadian side running back from potters or pincton
|
yea.. Roger That..I think I may have meet you a few years back ..have you ever launched out of Portsmouth Harbour in Kingston ??
|
Did I hear correctly, they have moved the Abay poker run from mid June to Mid July??

Hopefully they moved the date of the Kingston run. I would love to try it but its the same dates as the buffalo run. Also, I was not impressed with the a bay run last year. Maybe we are just spoiled with all the other great events we have gone to.
|
I am from Michigan and want to do a thousand island run but not sure which one is better. This is the second time I have seen a post that says Kingston is better than abay. Why and is this the final recommendation? I have done boyne thunder 3 times and that has become the standard run I know.
Thank you. |
The guys that have done the K town run say it is a lot better, as a spectator on the dock and on the water I see a bigger selection or boats and different boats ..cant talk about the organization of the run maybe the other guys can chime in on that.. The Abay dock and bars are fun, but K town restaurants and bars are better in my humble opinion ...but you cant walk around with a beer in your hand like in Abay...I was in a small charity poker run just up the river from you in Sarnia mid August it was on the Saturday of the International Power Boat Races ...lots of fun great people and Sarnia Bay Marina is a great place to stay ..Great concert of Fri and Sat night and the bars were packed ..will be going back next year for sure ..
|
i have never ran in either run. im sure others will post up
|
I boat in 1000 islands all the time, Canadian and us waters. Mostly go between the two party beaches: Grenadier island, which is north east of abay and leek island which is on the other side of potter's. I went to potter's once but the vibe sucked and ppl were dicks there! Maybe it's better other times. I routinely run from Kingston down to bRockville taking either Canadian or American channel. I prefer the Canadian since there are no slow zones. It's about an hour at a nice 50 mph cruise. I will post pics shortly. I'm leaving my boat in Rockport next year, party there every weekend and we always go to abay too. Cheap gas and booze. I run with a lot of other guys, mostly bajas but it's the ppl that are fun. Can't wait for next year!

I'm sure I can get us there just not sure where to go with the boat once we are there. As for the two beaches you talk about, I'd like to find where they are too! Potters is so-so, more family oriented really. Picton isn't too bad but can be a pain getting in and out because it's so narrow. We just found boaters beach behind Wellesley this August and finally took a ride to Brockville as well. We plan on being up there every weekend from July on next year as we have a camp between Abay and Singer Castle on the American side. We don't know many people up there as of yet, most are still boating at home.... |
Grenadier island is 5 mins from your camp. Lots of Americans come there too. Leaving abay, where the Canadian channel meets the American, go north and you are thère. Nice Sandy beach and good party - not family oriented bit I bring kids sometimes. We routinely have 50 or more boats in the bay and have 16 boat raft ups. I'll be there every weekend too!
|
great to see some new people!
i havent been to grenidier in ages. used to go their as a family all the time. that is awesome youre keeping your boat in rock port! which marina? we are long time family friends with the family who owns ed huck marina. and are not more than 2 miles from hucks!! i know some performance boaters who go to boaters beach but the most ive seen there is maybe 5 or 6 boats and thats not much fun of a party for us young people! lake of the isles is normally a great time but thats about a 3 minute ride from my cottage so thats pretty lame LOL. i plan to put some hours on the boat this summer! anyone go up to croil island sand bar? saw that they have a pretty *****in party there! its about an hour or so ride from the bay moving along pretty good at 60 or 70 |
Grenadier is much nicer then lake of the isles because you can actually get out of the boat! Lol
I'll be parked at cagiers resort, it's just in the same bay as hucks. Not really a marina but a good party place too. Never been to those places you mention but am curious to try them out. Leek is pretty awesome too, in front of the big forty. I've always wanted to check out big sand on the west side of wolf island but you need a calm day to go there. |

Awesome! Pretty sure I know exactly where you're talking about. I actually think it's directly across the river from us. We are basically right next to goose bay, Morgan island is right in front of our camp/marina. We'll have to hook up over there for some drinks! Phil, awesome meeting you and Eric yesterday, and that's one bad ass Hustler you have! I won't be able to keep up on the top end but I'll run with you anytime you want!! Thanks for having me over, next time I'll bring some beers! :ernaehrung004: |

Kingston vs. ABay events discussion may be a moot point as the ABay event may be getting moved to Clayton. A PRA event in July is being planned in Clayton that has the potential to be really great. I can't see PRA putting on three events on the river and I know that there was very little support given to PRA by town officials in Alexandria Bay.
Kingston event is really hard to beat due to the dockage, the hotel choices, and the involvement of city officials in making it a big event. Lots of spectator boats along the route of the run and big spectator turnouts at Brockville for lunch stop (which has a blues/ribfest going on too). The routes for both runs are similar, sharing much of the same water and the water is always perfect to run on. There are plans for some type of shootout at the Clayton event, which will be based out of the new hotel there. If it all comes together it will be epic ! Just need to wait for the official word from PRA on what is planned. |

anyone been to french fest in the cape? was talking with 82 predictor today and thinking it would be cool to have a french fest get together "fun run" and do some running around and end up at french fest! never been by boat and seems the docks are normally pretty well filled up all weekend... anyone got some ideas? would be something fun!! support the local festival, give us a reason to draw some crowds to the docks... get some drinks and some grub at some local places too!
|
Where is this? We still talking 1000 islands?
As for cagiers, management has changed and so have the bartenders chefs and menus. Was a fun place this past summer and will be even better in 2016. |
