The way I see it, there are 2 reasons somebody would want to self insure/not carry insurance.

You are so filthy rich that loosing a million or 2 won't matter.
You have absolutely nothing for anybody to take if they sue you.

I'm neither, so I will always have insurance.

What you can do is reduce your coverages. Of course I'm in a single 26 now but I did take it from 1300.00 to 700.00 with progressive. Went with the 2500 decutable that is really 500 with their disappearing deductable and reduced the agreed value to just a bit better than my loan principal. All the liablility stays.
