Coast Guard Document it and see if they catch up with you. It will depend on how aggressive your state is on tracking down CG doc boats.

Some have gotten away with it - some haven't. I do know a number of people with DE documentation to avoid the taxes.

In Indiana a CGD doesn't have to pay sales tax, but u still register it.

Don't have to display the IN numbers.

If you intend on titling in OH, you pay tax.

Document the boat during the purchase and you won't pay sales tax or registration fees.

I think you will find that true in just about any state, probably not all and im sure somebody will pipe in. But usually if you want it registered in that state a vehicle needs to be titled in that state which means taxes unless you can prove you already paid them in another state. Now most states require your car or truck be registered in that state if your a resident over 90 days or 6 months whatever it might be. Now boats from what I gather really dont have that rule. Now I can tell you in NY you cant be on sleds without a NY reg. All states are different. And a lot of people move and shake where they register and title it which can save money, but sometimes I think its a PITA to mess around with that.

And if you all havent look up MAINE trailer registration i got my trailers on this plan and its cheaper and is good for 5 years no hassle.

This is not true and the point of the thread. Some states do not charge sales tax on instate private party transactions. Nor does documenting always get you out of all taxes/registration fees.

Thats why I said usually. Im sure there are a few that dont, but that is not the norm.

With that said I think paying sales tax on used is BS. It was sales taxed when it was new why should it get it again and again and again.
