Unless you are buying the boat with a loan or are negotiating an agreed upon replacement value for the boat then i don't see why one would be necessary....ive never needed one other then when buying a boat via loan for the lender more then the INS company

I own the boat out right, this was a project that is almost finished, so the insurance needs to be finalized, coverage, agreed value ect. I was hoping to sea trial this weekend.

If you just wanted regular insurance with them dictating what the value is then im sure it would be different but since you want a certain value im sure thats why they want the survey...

Default survey ?

How about a wet transom or delamination, the boat is 17 years old.You can't see these problems by eye.A good surveyor with a moisture meter might surprise you.

I'd tell the agent a time and place and let them handle it themselves. try not to do a in water if you can

different insurance companies have different rules. over a certain age? survey. over a certain HP?
survey. you can check with different carriers, but the better the policy price, the more likely they want to be sure they aren't insuring a waterlogged pos. and the survey is good for 5 years, usually. are you sure you are keeping this beastie that long? and no issues? he will find something. trust me...
