New to Powerboating on LG

Im considering buying a 32 sunsation. I will be keeping it on Lake George. Alot of people tell me not to go with a performance boat because there is a lot of flak from the Cops exhaust, speed ect. PLease dont get me wrong, I'm not an advocate of driving 60 shoreside with the exhaust blaring, but Im just curious to know if the boys go out of their way to bust the go fast's. I figured I would ask to get some opinions of performace owners. Thanks in advance.

Big Time 02-20-2008 07:23 AM

Most of the time if you stay away from the south end of the lake (near town) you should be OK. I got written a ticket on the town docks for my exhaust when I went to dock up there for lunch one day. My general experience is that if you are far enough north (past Log Bay and the Sagamore) you generally don't have any issues. I only bring my boat up there a couple times a year though, but generally speaking they aren't looking to bust the performance boater's if you aren't being an idiot. I think a couple of the guys who are on this board also have clamp on muffler for their exhaust to cut down on sound.

Gladhe8er 02-20-2008 08:42 AM

Speed limit is 45 mph and it heavily enforced the further south you go. CMI clamp on mufflers are a good idea especially if you want to dock in the village and walk around/get lunch.

Hey Pete, Brian Here, Who Bought Your Scarab.
I'm Staying At The Chelka Lodge In July For 4 Days, Any Chance Of Hooking Up For A Ride On Your New Boat. When I Was There In October, Thought It Would Be Nice To Come Back, But Without The Boat.

Speed and noise are heavily enforced. Even if you drive under 45 and have mufflers, they follow you, test you and ticket you. And one of the comments about it not being inforced at the North end, NOT TRUE, There are alot less boats at the north end and plenty of patrol boats, your a much easier target. I dont like this subject because my boat, I want to use, sits in a barn, while I am forced to use other boats that conform to the lakes rules. Just happens to be a sore subject with me, sorry.

Bring them up to lake Champlain! Only a couple hours away and no speed or noise problems as of yet. :cool-smiley-011:

Hey Brian, I am glad to hear that you liked Lake George so much that you will be heading back. If I am up there the weekend that you are, I will absolutely give you a ride on the Active Thunder. I don't have my July planned yet, but throw me some dates....maybe I can start planning early.:cool-smiley-026:

I will be checking into Lake Champlain this summer, Any info on where to Launch near Ti and what to do on the lake would be appriciated.

LG is a great LAke to boat on.FullThrot may be exaterating a little bit.Yes, the cops are hard asses.Yes, you have to be careful about where you go fast but an enjoyable weekend on the lake is pretty easy.A lot of the time the cops do the noise test incorrectly.Bring the boat by the shop and we will test it the right way.Are you getting the boat from Mahopac?

Lake George is one the most beutifull places to boat! Just very controlled. If your going to operate a sportboat there, just stay under the speed limit, (45) Make sure your boat can comply to sound restrictions, and dont drink, ANYTHING, because you could be borded at anytime for inspection/ testing. All that aside, It is well worth it.

otis311 02-23-2008 09:53 AM

follow the rules and regs and you will be fine and not harrased.

Noise is a big issue. Stay under 90 dbs, get tested in the spring and keep your paperwork and they will not bother you.

If you have anymore questions feel free to contact me

I am working with Mahopac on the boat, (Charlie and Tom are great guys to deal with). Like I said I dont plan on being an a**hole on the Lake, I grew up here, I just want to make sure I'm not making the wrong decision, because I do plan on using the boat on the lake. I will have a quick and quiet exhaust on the boat so I guess only time will tell when to enjoy it, and when to keep it quiet.
Thanks for all the feedback! The only people I have had this coversation, up to this point are people that own cruisers, and in some cases, they want me to be as miserable as they are.
Otis I will be in contact with you soon, I look forward to being to being an active part of the association.
Thanks for all the advise. Any dock referalls please contact me @ 361-4423. Under cover or dry is a must.
Thanks
Anthony

I can only speak from my experience. Yes L.G. is regulated,
but if you own a performence boat & put on mufflers
you wont have a problem. I was running my 35 ex
with no mufflers & got pinched. Put on mufflers &
passed. No problem all last season. Speed limit is 45
but if you dont run like a idiot you wont have a problem.

Fullthrottle offshore. Any boat with dry pipes are out
of line. Here or anywhere except the ocean. Sorry,
but I have a house on the lake also. I like the sound
of a offshore boat as much as anyone, but dry pipes
are obnoxious. Especially in a lake surrounded by
mountains.

Rick, I know dry pipes are obnoxious, I was actually thinking on nameing my boat that, because thats what all my neighbors call it.
I tried Morgan's (talon25) bolt on muffers, they didnt bring my noise low enugh, so out of consideration untill mods are made I dont put it in the lake anymore.
Rick, I also never got a chance to thank you for your paceboat skills at the run (I was in your group, in a all red 33 Fountain with dry pipes) You did a great job and I had alot of fun. Thanks
Carguy, if you have a switchable exhaust, they test you in the open stage, not closed, just thought you might find that info usefull.

Carguy08 02-24-2008 06:47 PM

THanks for that info, I figured they would test it with the exhaust open. Too bad a couple if bad eggs spoil it for all of us. Do the guys from Mahopac know if the 32ss is louder than 90db???? I' assuming it is. :cool-smiley-026:

Thanks for the thumbs up :). I remember the all red 33. Love that boat. Glad you had a good time!

Unfortunatly,it is very hard to meet the 90 db reg with anything larger than 496's or 502's.
So far CMI's don't do the trick on anything thats 500's & up. I have Gibson bullits on my
496's and they just make it. The only way to do it is to get the exhaust under water with
big H.P.
Carguy, anything thru hull won't meet the regs without mufflers.:(

what if the thru hull option on the captains call was disabbled ? virtually making it thru prop only thoughts on this ? i would think this would be acceptable. im online with locking the option to prop only thru a pin or a non powered up solenoid.
just trying to help out hear. not sure if it will work or not how is the rule/law written can it be read or detrermined different ways ?

My 1996 22 Scarab with a 7.4L/330 hp rang up 95.1 db's two summers ago. $50 ticket for that one. 496's won't pass.

Anyone know what I should try on my 525 on the new boat?

That will work as long as the system cannot be switched to the thru hull exhaust.

No thru hull will pass without mufflers....almost impossible to get anything over 425 hp to pass
even with mufflers. The only way with high h.p. is to get the exhaust under water.

90.1 db with 500 efi's and 5" exhaust with CMI'S.... SO CLOSE

I'm starting to get the itch too even though I don't have a boat....hoping that people start to take them out in the next month or so and getting them back up for sale.

I remember last year I took the Scarab out for a test drive in May (I think it was the weekend before Memorial Day weekend) and was thinking to myself that not even two months ago I was snowmobiling in the same spot that I was running my boat.....spring/boating season will be here soon enough!!!!

Stellings headers to Stellings Mufflers. No real power loss either.
