But,why does not have 496 mag a lot of after market parts? Is not a goog engine? And for you is it better to put this one or the "old" 454 magnum 420hp?I'm very uncertein, because i would like to know which engine gives me more performance and more noise(i love rumbling)....could you advice me?Thank's Federico.

Sorry about that kinda over kill an 540s get kinda exspensive too.One the older 454 mag or hp engines bored out 60 with a good cam 10-1 comp.a 750 race carb and a set of big ovell port heads will get you 500hp with no problem and all kinds of them in the junk yards if you take the time to look.I been looking for a junk 496 with a good crank for the last year for a project i want to play with and still havent found one.I guess there better than i give them credit for,but i still think there a poor eng.,for a boat eng.

The big block chevy started life in 1965 as a 396cu it has since grown to [427-454-502] with many parts that are interchangeable, and have been raced in every form of motor sports over 40+ years. This new generation big block has only been around less than 10 years and has only been used in production trucks & marine use. [never the Corvette] Being from Detroit many of my friends work at General Motors, the word is this new generation big block [496] may be going away soon, and with GM Powertrain only to make big cubic inch small blocks for production marine, & truck use. Its not a bad engine but the aftermarket manufactures have not jumped on this engine and make the parts like they did for the good old big block that GM still sells as a aftermarket as well as Mercruiser. I would stay with the tride and true big block like the merc 502 Hp or update your 330, 454cu just my 2 cent's

Default 454's...575 hp

Just heard back from Jeff Haylet that the 454's that he had redone for the 31 Sprit should produce around 575 HP...10-1 compression, solid lifters, big cam. We will see...hope to have the boat in the water later this month for a test run
I will post pictures later in the week. Bud

Thank's for the advice h2oboater...i've understood that you prefer 454 or 502,but also 496mag (425 hp) run in P1 championship with Chaudron team and for this reason that i've asked you about them!!
For you because a new racer team in a new competition has chosen 496mag (425ho) and not 502 model?Becouse are they better than 502??this is the question that i ask to myself!!!! ...bye federico
