building a cradle
I am purchasing a 27' Magnum Marine Sedan project and picking it up at the end of the month. It does not have a trailer, so I am renting one to bring it home. I want to set it on a cradle while I work on it. my plan is to build a cradle out of 8" C channel and 2 x 12 lumber. Doing the math the furthest apart I can make the bunks is 44" which seems fine to me, but I was wondering how far apart are the stringers in a twin engine Magnum sedan? I'd like to have the bunks directly under the stringers if possible. I am adding a pic of what I'm envisioning below, please let me know if I'm way off base or if there is anything else I should consider. I plan to keep the cradle under the rear of the hull, and use some 4x4 lumber under the keel up front if necessary. I want it stable and sturdy in my shop, as I will be removing and rebuilding the engines and outdrives as well as raising the drives and relocating the exhaust etc..
Obviously not to scale http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps9028eaf5.jpg |

cut your 2x12s on the angle to match the angle of the hull

I made these dolly's just to move my 27 sport around easily in the "Mag port" .....cost me less than $100 to build!....I can move it anywhere in the Mag port (shop)
by myself.........it is so much better sitting on dolly's than a trailer if you want to move the boat in and out or side to side when doing work on the boat. |
I like those, what was the weight rating on the casters? My boat is currently rigged w/ twin chrylers so I imagine it weighs upwards of 5000 Lbs
|
each caster is rated upwards of 3,000lbs..........no problem supporting your 5,000lbs.........each dolly can support in excess of 12,000 lbs
the caster do need a solid floor to roll upon (cement or black top) otherwise they will dig in !! |
Where did you get the casters and the swivel brackets? The only casters theat HD that I've found are over 200$ a piece
|
Harbor Freight has a great selection of casters.
I saw Pete's (Scippy) in person and I'd give it a "10"!! By the way Pete, how is the Magnum coming? I'd love to stop by and check it out! Bob |
I have used these casters from Tractor Supply [TSC] not a bad price [29.99] & good quality & 900 pound capacity. .
http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...l?cm_vc=-10005 If you need a Polyurethane Plate Caster these are [39.99] each. If you build a set up like Pete's you will more than enuff capacity. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...l?cm_vc=-10005 |
