I drew up the dash panels and sent the drawings to get them laser cut. I know have more invested in the dash than my original purchase price of the boat lol.

Final coat curing... Will colorsand and buff next week:

I cannot say enough good about FPM metals. I sent my drawings in on 12-8 confirmed pricing with them that afternoon and the panels showed up on the 12th. They are laser cut from .030 thick Stainless sheet that has been engine turned with a 1/2" pattern. Every hole, dimension and radius is perfect

Here is the link for their website: http://www.fpmmetals.com
I drew the panels up in autocad after making full size templates out of poster board A few more pics: http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...psonkbfas8.jpg http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps1tsluc2e.jpg |
That looks really good, that dashboard going to turn out great. Not to mention it sounds a lot easier then what I just did making my own panel. I used a drill press and hole saws. Then a drum sander to smooth it out and make the holes the correct size.

Wow, your boat brings back memories! Around 1972 I owned a 1968-9 light blue (same color as yours) Magnum sedan with the earlier deck and a lower profile all plexiglass windshield. The sedan deck was changed to your style in 1971 or 1972. My boat had a pair of stock Holman & Moody 302 Fords and 250 Volvo outdrives with thru the outdrive underwater exhaust. It went about 48 mph but was as quiet as a car and fun after boating in friends boats with open exhausts. But I needed speed so a total rebuild with forged pistons, 351 heads. Ford hipo hydraulic cam, Edelbrock intake. Holley 600 cfm , custom oil pans with oil coolers and open exhausts. Later on Volvo 280 drives, trim tabs, outdrive tie bar etc The boat was as fast as Magnums with 300 hp Chris Crafts which also used Volvo outdrives.
Prior to the Magnum I had a 22' Hyliner which I repowered with a Chrysler Marine Super Bee III with a Volvo 270 drive 340 ci, factory painted Hemi orange with black wrinkle finish valve covers .About 265 HP @ 4600 stock. This marine engine used 318 marine heads and had the 340 275hp auto trans performance cam . I installed 340 Trans Am heads, an aftermarket 4bbl manifold to fit the 340 heads and the 340 manual trans cam. The stock large AFB carb worked fine . A borrowed 715 cfm Holley made no improvement. My rpm went from 4600 to 5300 with the same prop. A friend bought a new 1972 Magnum Sedan in yellow with the racing layup hull which saved weight and custom gold colored anodised window frames and a custom low cut glass windshield and other appearance upgrades. The boat was powered with Flagship Marine 350 ci LT1 Chevys 11to 1 compression and Volvo racing outdrives which had a speedmaster style lower unit and turned 12" merc style props. On a day with a little chop in the water the boat would break 70 mph. Don Aronow took a ride in this boat at the factory before it was delivered and supposedly was impressed . He was building Cigarettes at that time. Looking at your pictures I see that the boat was not run to hard and that the previous owners were not looking for the last mph. The underwater exhaust outlet on the outdrive which is non functioning because you have open exhausts kills about 2 mph compared to a fin style trim tab. An outdrive tie bar would improve steering safety and response . I never saw an early 70's Magnum with Chrysler engines installed at the factory but they would install whatever the customer wanted. If your Chryslers were factory installed I think they would have been 340 ci. Do you know the history of your engines? For your info big horsepower increases won't give you the speed increases that you might like . The Volvo outdrives are a hydrodynamic brick in terms of slicing through the water! Contact me if you're looking for more info [email protected] Have fun, good luck Bill |
Bill, as far as I can tell the boat originally came with 340s. It was definately Chrysler powered since new. Somewhere along the line they were replaced with 360s. I am installing 5.9 Magnum based 408 CuIn strokers with hydraulic roller cams and EngineQuest Iron cylinder heads. Should be good for ~ 450 HP a piece. I am not really looking for more than 70 MPH maybe a touch more with the boat.
I am running the 290-SP style lowers that had the exhaust come out above the prop. |
Curious. How quality are those eq heads? I've been kicking around buying a set of the monster magnums or the Indy rhs ma x heads. Both about the same price when you factor in springs and 2.02 intake valves.
