If you read glass Dave's recommendation on rebuilding transoms here on OSO CDX is just fine. Raising drives up 3" & around 33" centers should be just fine also... The only down side is finding props that work with your Volvo drive, Solas don't work when you raise the drives they slip bad. I'm running 23p Merc Mirage props as I have Merc spline shafts. Jeff & I making prop adapters but there not ready yet, Jeff's off racing in the Cowes Torquay race so they will have to wait till Jeff gets back to work on them.

I've read about your project and will be in line for your adapters. I'm surprised no one has made them yet. It seems like a product that would have a decent market.

Do you have any ballpark price worked out yet?

I'm 1/2 way there!! I bought a Volvo SP A outdrive and complete transom assy today, I am picking it up tomorrow. I know I have to enlarge the transom cutout for this drive, but the built in Trim is worth the effort at this point. I won't know for sure about the transom until I get the engines pulled and the old transom plates off anyway. It sounds great, but I imagine after 42 years there would have to be some issues back there, especially considering the shape of the drives themselves.

Some update pictures: Cleaned off the outside of the transom so it will be easier to clamp the new transom wood when I get to that point, and I cut out the rear cockpit bulkhead foe better access to the engine compartment, then
i pulled the cockpit sole up, next is removing the fuel tanks. http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...psdf8778ea.jpg http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...psdc38ff7c.jpg http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...psf22f085a.jpg Tomorrow is 3 weeks since I picked her up in CT. |
Your moving at a good pace for 3 weeks...............as far as the tanks go I would replace them if there original! ......My tanks (original 37 yr old very pitted but not leaking)
passed a presure test but was advised that the fatique factor in the aluminum will eventually give way sooner than later. Yours are 42 yrs old and if original why take the chance when underway and pounding she'll crack on you........Plus, pulling the tanks without damaging them is a finesse thing..........when your replacing you can just go at it!.............I used long sawsall blades to cut the foam.......it's tedious, but it works well. If you intend to save the tanks I would stretch a wood plank across the stringers just to stand for leverage and also from stepping on the tanks. |
When I got my Magnum it still had the original Volvo cut outs, along with 179 other holes in the transom. being a Volvo guy I was looking into early version trim Volvos but parts are for those are made of unobtainium. To get the trim I decided to go with the later model SP drive. With that I still have the option to swap out lowers for DP if I want.

That said, is there any way to mount a tie bar or Hydraulic steering to the SP drive? Ive seen plates on the old 270-280 drives, but not for the SP/DP type. |
