Similar concept but not the same as the original Volvo design, but hey if it works it`s possibly good enough.

OK lets start again, the pivot point in the picture may be on a similar axis line but the steering mounting plate on the original Volvo design mounted under the top section of the gearshift housing behind the gear shift cover and protruded out either side through slots cut out of the cover sides. So if the 290 and the later SP both have removable back covers just maybe the steering adaptor plate could be fitted if you so wished. However I only ever raced 270 E and 290 standard drives. Sorry I don`t know what an SP drive is..

The SP is the Single Prop outdrive that came after the 290. It is still in the se AQ family and uses the same center casting but had small upgrades to the upper and lower housings. They are pretty much the same as a 290.

I was looking at mine today and I think I can make a plate that is mounted by 2 of the bolts that attach the upper housing to the intermediate housing. I have a sheet of 3/8" plastic I'm going to play with to make a pattern that I can get water jetted out of Stainless. It looks to me that it would also work
On the 270-280 style drives as well. |

Robert one other way you could go is like how I'm going with my sedan. My Hydraulic steering ram will be internal using the stock Volvo tiller arm the drives come with. Many of the Magnums were set up this way, even if they raced them. Pic's of my Donzi Doral [1,3&5 ] have the duel Rideguid steering you can simply replace that with hydraulic cylinders. The pic of the red Donzi & the white & blue strip one have one hydraulic cylinder internally, & have tie bar internally also. My sedan will have the internal tie bar & one hydraulic cylinder as I'm going back with a swim platform, clean & simple.

I was considering that, but I thought half the reason for going hydraulic was to eliminate the flex of the helmet, or am I over thinking it? I do plan on running a swim platform as well and realize real estate on the transom is getting eaten up Quickly with the drives, tabs, exhaust, steering etc... |
