We have seen a lot of dorsal fins this year down north and south of St Clements. I asked a river old timer and he said they're probably a ray. I had to come up with something or my wife and the kids wouldn't get back in the water.

Haven't told them about the 8 footer caught in the lower Potomac yet......

I researched a bit and found this.

Cownose Ray

Flaps its “wings” like a bird to swim through the water. As it swims, the tips of the fins break the surface and can look like shark fins. Many "shark sightings" in the Bay are actually cownose rays.

On the year we have, a couple of sharks, a whale, a dead manatee, some dolphins... I think i'll go try my hand at some bill-fishing off my pier today.

Also,

Fairview has had swim advisories for most of the summer. Sharks are probably smart enough to stay away. We humans are not.

Strange isnt it. Was told by several people at Fairview Beach about the advisories last weekend. When I asked where they got their information, they said radio, newspapers all published it. The river is Md, and not a word have I read or heard about the swimming advisories on the Md. side of the river.

Its my understanding the water is monitored by the Va. Dept of Health. Its usually posted in the Free Lance Star Newspaper(Fredericksburg) and a couple of Fredericksburg radio stations. Not alot of help to our Maryland neighbors, and folks coming from other areas.

Those advisories are for sissies. The same people who tell us that there is more bacteria on a public door knob than in a toilet bowl.
