Lake Anna Fun Run -- Feeler
Been talking to some buddies about doing a fun run/poker run on Lake Anna. Of course this would be smaller boat geared, but myself, and a number of other locals with 30-40' boats run here quite often during the summer. The lake is a little over 17 miles tip to dam, and we could probably expect 20-25 miles of run. The lake, for those of you that haven't been there, is very nice, very clean, and has a number of very nice homes on it. With the opening of Tims @ the lake, there are now a total of 4 restaurants on the water, and plenty of other places we could make a 5th stop.
Is anyone interested for a change of pace? There are plenty of very nice ramps/facilities capable of handling most any size boat. I'm all ears. |
I would run it, been talking about going back to lake Anna. Last time I was on the lake, you could still stay on plane going under the bridges, and you may only see a couple of Jet Ski's. I understand things have changed their now.
|
I'd be interested. I love that lake.
However, I think water patrol would have to be alerted and worked with on this. The 208 Bridge area is as busy and dangerous as the mixing bowl in Springfield. And as soon as we delve into the narrow spots toward either northern tip, it would have to be agreed upon by all that we would run single file at controlled speeds. Oh yeah, water level needs to be up too! You guys with tiny steps are good, but if I can't float 5 inches or so off the trailer, I'll be bringing the jet ski! |
Its worth looking into. As Brian said, communication with the water patrol would be a must.
|
sounds good. It will give us a good reason to go to the Lake.
|
I'd love to do it, another opportunity to get with like minded boaters is always a hit in my book. That said I'm not interested in another $300 poker run that all I get out of is a gas bill.
I'm familiar with the lake (well I know where it is) from wake boarding days but are there any hotels etc on the water? |
been a while since we were there, but we might be interested if the date works out.
|
To answer some questions:
1) I'm thinking fun run here, $30-50 hands, no frills. 2) Sturgeon Creek and High Point both have some DEEP ramps. Even with the lake is down a bit I'm 18" over my trailer if I want to be. 3) There are 3 hotels on the lake now. The new one opening under Tim's on the lake, and Anna Point and I believe High Point both have hotels. |
It would be a blast! Check with some of the current locals for help. They have a hot boat weekend early in the year and would be interesting to do it that weekend.
|
I like the idea too. Might be nice to do it in August after jelly-fish season has hit the tidal waters...
|
I might be interested - have not been to the lake since the early eighties - a group of us went and got hassled so badly by the game warden we never went back.
|
The lake is certainly a nice place in the heat of summer, lots of places with nice bottom, and if the boat traffic isn't too bad you can actually see your feet.
As far as game wardens/sheriffs, I am going to make the call and see what they have to say. I know most of them well, and it's always seemed that if we are respectful, they don't mind at all. Don't blow any no wakes, don't go blasting down the lake at 5:00 AM, etc. I boat there every other weekend and don't ever get stopped, a buddy of mine with dry tails does just as frequently, and has no problem. The Hot Boat guys there during the summer certainly don't have ANYTHING quiet or slow, and they are left alone. Dockage is my other concern. Most of the establishments have small slips, limited dock space, etc, so I'm sure that rafting up could get interesting. Right now this is all just thinking out loud, so I'd love to hear any and all input. |
I don't know where the Tim's Lake Anna is going to be, but will they have a Shuttle? Maybe they can bring one over from the River and we can anchor out?
|
The Tim's dockage is probably the best on the lake. They have yet to open, however I'd say they probably have 200-300 ft. of dock to tie/raft against, and it's in a no-wake zone. The docks at the "No Wake Zone" are also decent, but can fill up fast around lunch time. Docks at Anna Cabanna worry me, they see a lot of main lake traffic, and it's geared to 18-25' boats. I can't get in a slip at all. This may turn in to a "fun cruise" with a poker hand... who know's. I'd just like to get everyone together down here for a day/weekend. It is a very nice lake, with some nice amenities, and is definitely a nice alternative to jumping in the brown Potomac.
I think some of these stops may have to be "on the water" card stops.... idle by the dock, draw your card and wait on the pack. I'd like to find a venue to "host" the majority of us. Sturgeon Creek has a some nice, shaded pavilions, a good bit of dock space, etc where we could cookout. Tim's, although they haven't opened, I'm sure could "support us" as well. |
Brian, that's another thing I was thinking about. Possibly paying a friend in a pontoon boat to follow us around to our stops and shuttle us for the day.
|
Was there with a bunch of friends in drag boats, anchored and not bothering anybody. Game warden meets us at the private ramp we were using and safety checks me, as I was first out. I have everything and he stares at my boat and says "I need to see a Coast Guard approved flame arrestor." I reply "in an open engined boat?" He is going to cite me, but I said you better write everyone here (at least 15 boats). He calls his supervisor who tells us to "get our ni***r boats back to Washington (some of us had DC registration). Basically did not want us there. Hopefully things have changed in 30 years.
|
I think we should meet up (maybe central park) and discuss dates.:ernaehrung004: If you know what i mean.
|
You also got the "sandbar"(duckblind) as spot to hang/raftup. Large area of waist deep water to float around and mingle in while the boats are anchored/rafted up.

There is also the islands to raft/anchor. Maybe check with Jack Weller. He does the hot boat weekend in June.
|
Can anyone put me in contact with Jack?

Lake Anna Feast
The Lake Anna Feast at Jack's will be June 8th and 9th 2012, We usually have 150 plus boats there mostly jets and v-drives, Performance Boats magazine is going to be there again this year. I have the lone outboard drag boat there, so more outboards are welcome so I'am not so outnumbered.
|
Well it sounds like this is shaping up to be a don't miss event. Looks like this could be a good season for the VA area boaters, SML poker run at the end of May, this in June, July is full with the fourth, Jammin on the James, PPP on the James, Poker Run for a Cure at the end of July, etc etc.
One question about lake Anna though would be water temp that time of year. If the idea is to raft up at a sandbar etc then I hope the water is warm, I'm not a fan of cold water :) |
Haven't been on here in a while guys, but my thoughts are this...
I think this year, we may run this as a "trial" run. Perhaps make this a cruise/fun day/weekend for us. I'd like out of towners to be able to get rooms and stay on the water, and I'd like for the "group" to be able to hang together, run the lake together, etc. I just want to see how we are "received"... I've never had any issues with running a pack of boats, but having an "organized" event may prove a bit sticky. Would the same crew be down for a weekend similar to hotboat? Just a bunch of us gathering, spending the day/weekend. Perhaps put together a cookout, etc? |

Another issue can be the bridge heights. Some of them are real low (can touch them on a jetski).

when is hot boat weekend?

The Hot Boat weekend is June 8th and 9th this year.

damn! MPC Reiter Cup is the 9th of June also. Maybe there is a reason I never make it to that Lake.

Jacks Weller's event is always a great time! i would love to see this run get pulled off this summer. While we are on the subject of this new adventure...
We (RRBA) are working with the American Cancer Society to get together a fun run/poker run this year on the Rappahannock River and would really appreciate it if you guys could come out for a good time and also for a good cause! Event details are coming but, looking tenatively like it will be around mid August. Would others be interested??? I am not trying to hijack this thread at all! I only brought it up because I am interested in attending the run on the lake and I already planned to be at Jack's event. I thought that most of you guys that would attend a run on Lake Anna would be the same group that would be available to run on the Rappahannock. Only reason I brought it up here! Carry on.... Thanks guys and gals. |
Status on a L.A. fun run. Weekends are filling up fast.
Tims Potomac River Poker Run is June 16th |
| All times are GMT -5. The time now is 06:26 PM. |
