The motor is out.

I took the motor out today and found that the coupler was gone. I hav the standard coupler so I bought the hp for it this time. I decided to send the motor to Gary Grimes a local engine builder to have the engine dyno tuned and swap the intake manifold and fuel injection for the holley setup. This combined with the mefi 4a should run great. I am hoping for 750 to 800 hp afterwards. Right now I am at 705hp and 725 torque. I almost forgot they are taking the motor apart and repainting everything mercury racing blue. I wil post pictures as soon as I get them.:evilb:

That didnt last long. What happened? Whats wrong with the EFI?
|
I just want more. The boat ran flawless with the motor, im a fool.

You are THE MAN I think you need to trade up to a 34. and let some one else enjoy the Thor. Trade Trade Trade. |
John... you are no fool... you just have the speed bug.
Don't we all? :ernaehrung004: I have yet to find the cure. Chris |

75 HP increase seems a little bit "dreamy" to me. No offense, just don't think you're gonna meet your goal without a better change up. Maybe valve train or head work to go with that.
It will be interresting to see the results. Good luck, and keep us posted... I'll be watching. |
The current intake on John's motor is great for torque, but is known to sign-off around 5400-5500 rpm... even on a 502 motor. John has a 598. His rev limiter is currently set at 5600, and starts pulling timing out at 5400. You can feel the boat slowing in acceleration around 5400 with his current setup.
Along with the better flowing intake, he is also raising his rev limiter to 6200, in order to spin the motor to 5800-5900 without banging into the timing reduction. I am pretty sure that both of these changes together, are going to make a noticable increase in power. I do agree though... A visit to Mr. Whipple's Magic Kingdom, would make this motor really smile. :evilb: It's just a matter of time and money! Chris |

Pfaff uses the Edelbrock setup on his newer stuff as that intake is indeed restrictive. Last I chatted with him they make around 740 on the dyno with the Single plane setup.
Good move for sure...:drink: Dave |
I have seen those intakes make 670 or so on a 540ci, not going to get much more.... tried it. I am sure that a good intake and dominator will fix you right up. My dominators on my 572's have been as good as EFI lately. Bump the key after sitting all week and go straight to idling.
Good luck. |
Pfaff used a huge cam to offset the restrictive intake manifold. I cant wait to see the results. I will let you know as soon I know
|
I'm excited to see the engine get back in the boat John! I think it should pick up a few mph! :ernaehrung004: Gary Grimes and Roy are hands down some of the best engine builders on the East Coast!

110 here I come
|
John,
You should have bought the motor you called me about. Complete drop in pushed my 25' eliminator 120 mph on my gps at 2600 ft alt. idle at 750 rpm in gear only has 10 hrs. It is still for sale. |
i dindnt want a motor that tall. Fuel injection was a must also

Hey John,
Killer look'in engine! What oil pan is on there? I tried to run a Imco low alt/ps mount on mine but it interfered with the Milodon pan I had. Thanks, Jon |
Im not sure what oil pan that it has on the motor but it was put on by Paul, so you could probably call him and ask. As for the motor the boat is running and the motor is making more power than before. I am dialing in the boat but it runs great. The boat in the heat before would run 100 with 20 gallons of gas and 2 people and now it will run 101 with 2 people and 60 gallons of gas in really rpough water. I think 103 with smoother conditions. This is with a 34 pitch prop at 5600. I have a new 32 bravo on the way witch will be here on friday. We are also going to put a wideband in the exhaust because with this huge fuel pump I installed I think the fuel pressure is a little high. Those electric gauges are not to reliable. I will have some more info this weekend but I think it will do a solid 105 in the heat when we are done and possibly 108 in the fall.

Slap a 32 labbed on her for the summer and a custom 35labbed for the cooler temps and you should be happy with it...then you can sell her and start over, I have been thinking of that, doing a RPM with a Phaff 15:drink:00, with a #6, I know crazy.... |
Hi John,
The motor looks great! See you at Calhoun's on Friday. Best Regards, Steve |
