Sorry I haven't seen the article. When I picked up the boat from nordic it had the 26 on it, however I think they put the 26on for the higher elevation I run in utah. I heard the boat ran in the 80's for the article, so they must have run a 28 or bigger.

90mph rage
So you are running 83-84 with the new rebuild?
How many horeses are you running now?
What kind of speed do you think I should be running once I get the boat all broken in?

Hey Oboy,
I was winterizing over the weekend. Suppose to snow this week
I'll dig up the magazine this week and shoot you a PM.
On NA motors you will see 3-4" (closer to 4") of pitch difference between here (5000 feet) and Havasu and generally 7-9 mph.
If your not over 5100 rpm now with the stock 26 the lab 26 should be spot on. The Rage reacts very well to the Merc lab finished props proven thru DesertRage's (Jon's) testing.
He has another 26 you might want to try. It's "kinda" labbed by a local guy but works fairly well.
I don't think you'll see any additional break-in increase but I would think 75 around our parts should be a good solid number for you when your done

Come on Spring!

Dave

The rebuild was conservative, so I don't think I added too much more hp. Just slightly taller cam, new ignition, new pistons for the bore over & a little port work. Whipple says 725ish stock hp500, so I'm thinking 750-775ish. I've seen guys squeeze 850+ with more boost, but I can't afford a new motor every year & I'll keep the boost 5-6. This altitude it's not much, but I get down to Havasu every now & then.

I agree with Dave, your probably pretty much broken in & 75 is a good #.
I'll tell you my experience w/ labbed props. My 32 was 4850rpm before lab. 5150 now, so 300 added for lab & drops pitch to about 31. Rule of thumb, 300 per 2" of pitch & 300 rpm for lab & lowers pitch -1". So a lab 28 pushes the water of a 27, but turns easy as a 26. You can send your 26 to merc for about $350 for lab, or talk to Jon or Dave for a local guy. It'll get you probably 2-3 mph.

How are the locally labbed props compared to the Merc ladded props?
I think the the 26 pitch labbed will get me to close to 5100 rpm.

I would like to pick up a 24 pitch prop for Flaming george, but won't have any cash till december. Let me know if you come across one.

I noticed that the rage seems to really like to have the drive trimmed up to run fast. Have you guys experienced the same?

It seems like I was running around 70 when I ran the boat at pineview so I think you are probably right on with 75 once I get a labbed prop and a few more hours on the boat.

SkiBum,

Welcome to the forum! You have an awesome boat, I caught a glimpse of it on Pineview a few weeks back. I really like the green and white scheme.

The Rages do like a lot of trim. They need it to get up on the pad. Mine throws around a 3' high roost when running WOT.

The prop I ran all summer was a Bravo 1 26p that was labbed by Marine Prop in Clearfield, Ut. He did a good job with the thinning and balancing, but it doesn’t have the same transom lift as the Merc labbed props. When I tried a Merc labbed 28p I picked up 3mph. I ran the 26p at Flaming Gorge (6000'), Pineview (4900'), and Powell (3700') speeds were 78-83 depending on the lake. You are welcome to try it if you like; it’s also for sale…

Jon

Jon,
What motor and horsepower are you running to get speeds of 78-83?

Its good to know they like a lot of trim, becuase it seemed pretty high compared to my previous boats.

I am going to be doing some tubing and wake boarding, so I still need some hole shot thats why i was thinking about a 24 pitch for flaming george and as a spare.

I have talked to the marine prop guy and he seems to know his stuff.

It’s a custom 555ci n/a. It’s never seen the dyno, but I estimate around 650-675hp. I was spinning the 26 right around 5700, that’s where my motor wants to run.

I know exactly what you mean by the trim. It took some time for me to get comfortable with it.

A 24 might be best for Slalom at the Gorge. I noticed about 100-150 rpm difference between Pineview and Gorge. I guess it depends on how quick it planes at Pineview with your current 26.

Marine Prop does great work and excellent repair jobs. In my experience, the Merc lab was a better fit though.

Just a thought Skibum (water or snow ski?)
You may want to try a 24 at Pineview. If your thinking that a lab 26 would get you to 5100 then your probably about 4800 rpm now with the stock 26. You will want to get the rpms up even more. I believe in the PB test they were spinning a 28 to near 5400rpm. The cam in that motor wants some rpm so a "Merc" lab 24 would not be out of the question. Start with a stock 24 and see where that pulls to. It may pull you up in the powerband and have a great ski boat attitude with a better top end Then labbing the 24 (with a little extra cup) would put you in the really sweet spot
If it works the guys at EKF will get Nordic to swap you I would bet. Again the 4" rule seems to apply here
