Question 28 Heat speed increase?

So, I came away from the boat show with my eyes on something new. And it wasn't a Nordic. But after a long look at my finances and what a new boat would set me back, I think I will keep the ol' 28' for now.

So........

With a stock 502 on a stepped hull I do 61-64mph.

If I add a Whipple and a new prop, what speeds am I looking at?

It might bring some new excitement (at a much cheaper price) to keep me in the Nordic a little while longer.

(And I do have a full Max Machine drive, so I can handle the increase in HP)

RiverRacerX,
My recent mods (575 to 725hp/bobtail) have netted me a 9 MPH increase. So, if you divide 150hp by 9mph you get 16.7 hp to increase 1 mph.
I have a 2001 step hull Heat with a 575. It ran 76 stock, and now runs 85/GPS.
So, if you pick up 150hp, you should be looking at 70/73. Maybe more, and here's why. Speed increases are not always linear. The faster you go, the harder it is to faster, because the aerodynamic and hydrodynamic drag forces on the hull increase exponentially. It takes more hp to go from 76 to 85, than 64 to 73.
Good luck with your mods. I think you'll be very pleased with the Whipple stuff. I am using a Whipple intercooler on my 575.
Let us know how it goes.
Regards,
Steve

Well, the boat that caught my eye was the new 30' Magic deck boat. Now before you start flaming you must realize the boating I do. The boat stays in havasu, I have two kids and occassionally take my folks out on it. The deck boat is 30' long 9 1/2 feet beam and about two feet taller than the 28' deck. It is a centerpod cat, built for comfort and the height allows it to have two cabins on each side (a must). Also has twins. Wife also doesn't want a closed deck, and likes the practical space on the deck boat. I have photos on my board if you want to check it out. I just don't want to spend the money ( or can't ) right now.

LIOPA, I love my Nordic and love Lonnie and the folks there, but I certainly wouldn't hold my breath on those new models. I have been watching the 42 and the 26 cat being built since day 1 and I am still watching! They have also had the "New 30' coming soon" in their regatta program for the last 3 years. I would love to see a new model come out! They need another hit. I love their 35', but no open bow and it gets too hot in Havi for a closed deck.

How hard are the Whipples to install. I am a pretty good wrench, but don't have a clue when it come to tuning or touching the computer stuff!

Chris,
I’ve worked on and am closely acquainted with a few different configurations of 28s
A Whipple on your motor would definitely wake up your 502 Heat (substantially).
Your speeds will increase substantially and depending on the amount of boost, you will be looking at a jump from ~400 hp to around an honest 575hp. Your situation makes your setup a great candidate for the intercooled Whipple. You boat where it is very, very hot and have access to very nice cold water out of the bottom of the Hoover year round. This means that much of your heat robbing issues will be overcome upping your baseline performance.
I am not a very optimistic person when it comes to speed expectations however I am pretty comfortable thinking your boat should run an honest 74-76 mph on GPS everyday. Just make sure your bow cover is on and you don’t have any passengers in the front
A couple of questions come to mind:
How many hours are on your motor?
When was the last compression check?
Are you planning on freshening the motor?

I am in the final stages of wrapping up a 3.3L Whipple install on a 2001 502Mag in a 24 HTM. It has been a fairly straightforward install and Dustin has quickly resolved any issues that did come up. This wasn’t the standard setup for a 502Mag, which generally uses the 2.3L charger so there were a few new variables. I went with the bigger charger on this setup because we demand a little more boost up here at our higher elevations and there are some upgrades in the future

Give me a call if you need any additional info.
Dave

UNDERSTOOD River.....although there are some major changes in the works as we speak for NORDIC. Kal Kustom is now heavily involved in the CATS being developed. The one you see at Nordic is just one of a couple being developed at another location by Kal Kustom. In addition to 2 cats a DECKBOAT cat almost ready as well. It is based off the smaller cat and very very trick. The goal for public release is early this summer. The 42 late Fall which has been pushed back for the cat series to be completed. Of course this could all change in a heartbeat but this info is 2 days old and from an inside source at Kal Kustom.......
