"People who are true craftsmen dont always have good websites, many times they dont need them because they have word of mouth to rely on."
OTOH, people who are true craftsmen are sometimes just that...they should just do the work, not try to run a business. I've seen plenty of examples of this in a bunch of different industries. The guys do good work, but can barely function enough to keep their heads above water. Drives me nuts when I want something done and it takes forever or gets put off or the wrong stuff gets ordered blah blah...

OH man they must be good they have a web site!
We see that with builders all the time good quality builders who dont hammer people on pricing, dont spend allot of moneyor time on web sites, then you get some crap builers like Pulte or toll brothers with a good website and they sell a ton of houses. people dont know there wrok sucks until the own the house , Too late!

Then there are people who do great work with no websites and people who do crap work with out them too.
My point is you shouldnt use the website to judge someones work capabilities and it sounds like you havent.
Sounds like you went down to see the shop etc.. Thats good practice, Check the work because any azz bag can put a picture on a web page.
I try and show in progess work most of the time online then I take people to see the completed work in person.
Personally 99% of my work comes from word of mouth referals.
Just sayin the people first on google search are less than likely to be the best VALUE out there. You see so many fantastic flash presentations on websites etc and in a year or 2 the companies are bankrupt from lawsuits
