If you set them and leave them.... you will have them in far enough to get on plane and out enough to run a decent top end speed... You just lose that option to adjust for diferent water conditions...
That's all I am asking... Does he feel that he loses anything by NOT having them..
thats what they make tabs for , leave the drives alone
Make Sense???
use your tabs , leave the drives at optimum position

mmareno,

Gald to hear you got a chance to run your boat. I spoke with you once before about OE's. I just pulled my ASD off and think I've found my problem/noise. Just curious how your boat Idled and shifted in and out of gear while around the docks? What RPM do you have your motors set at. Keep up the good work with your boat.

It ran good. It idled Fine.. Jimmy's good with Blowers and adjustements... It was good until I smoked a trans. I have the Hurth trans.. They are good for 500-600hp.. Jim found a guy in Texas that they are going to this week to beef them for over 1000hp. Boat ran great though. Shifter really smooth... He sent me an email today.. Boat is completely Derigged... I have a clunking noise coming from my port engine/drive when in gear. Motors good, transmission was pulled apart, replaced u-joints on driveshafts. Checked CV joint in thrust tube. That left the gear box/case. Took it off and inspected the gears and bearings. Bearing on top closest to transom was completely rusted. The balls in the bearing looked more like a lava rock then a nice smooth ball. I believe I found the noise maker????

Always the upper bearing. The bearing sits dry all winter. If any moisture in case, it will rust the upper bearings. Time to change all bearings. Not that expensive. I would get a new seal kit. This is why they rusted in the first place.

It was strange. Only one bearing had rust. It was completely rusted. Not even a sign of rust on anything else in the gear box. Definately had to have a bad seal. Going to pull the bearings off the shaft tonight. Do you think with an upper bearing that rusted it was the cause of the clunking sound while in gear? I've looked at everything else and the only thing that looks bad is the bearing.

I would say you probably found your source of the noise. Upon relacing the bearing and seal, make sure that the seal diameter on the shaft is smooth or it will tear up a new seal rather quickly.
