Default Blistered?

Went over to pick up the drives from the powder coater.

They are Gorgeous! However, at the bottom of the drop boxes are these tiny blisters. They thought it is from water vapor escaping the casings. These things have not been in the water for 5 years. They were baked on the first coat and it was the clear that bubbled.

Anyway at this point I cannot afford the time to have them refinihsed, again! They have to take all the tape off and I will pick them up tomorrow.

Also decided to use a nickel plated piano hinge on the hatches. Received them today from Grainger. They look fantastico!

Have you decided on which hatch cylinders to use yet?

The powder coating will out gas no matter how old and how long they have been out of the water.

I get it all the time on new and old parts alike.

They say to soak the aluminum parts in Viniger and water to help remove any salt that might be leached in them if they have been in the salt water in the past??

How fast have any of the 39's even gone?

New drive, yes we make a new ASD8 called the ASD8-6 that comes in both RH and LH rotation. Only thing is it is not nearly the same size as what you currently have for a drop box.

Check out my web site to see what I designed.

I do not use any ratio sleeves, seal blocks, wedge plates or standoff brackets for the new drives. A lot simpler design and easier to work on from every aspect and lighter weight. I Oringed the mounting surfaces also. Made things a lot cleaner.

Default Yes

1. The drives have been in the salt twice. A couple poker runs. They had powder coating and then paint on top of that.

2. Hatch: I am going to use hydraulic trim cylinders. It is going t take some engineering but fortunately I have the guys to do it. I am essentially going to use the basic design from my Top Gun and modify it to fit. The hatch may need a latch on the front to eliminate any bounce or cracking.

Once I get into this and it looks good I can send some pics. Actually if it works and you like it I can have all the pieces made. Even powder coated.

Default ASD 8-6

Hi Rik.

Actually I have checked those out. Pretty sweet and they look very simple. Less weight is always better too.

Everybody who comes into the shop and sees the ASD8's disassembled are amazed how simple they are.
Also at the size of the chain. I guess a few years back a guy bought a 39 with 8's and there was no oil in the drives. He splashed it ran it about 50 miles and they were perfectly fine. Of course they were full of water!

The fatest I have heard of a 39 was 135. These things weigh 12,000 lbs. I have seen them spin out ( a 48) but no tales of them flipping or going into flight.

There is a company in OH that makes a S.S. hatch lift powered by a trim pump.

Zeiger Industries.

They are repped by "World Products" I believe the company is called. Someone named Paul

Nice polished hydraulic cylinder.

Out gassing is caused by several things, mostly its the porosity of the material and the heat making the metal expand and allowing the pressures or air to escape. It never seems to go away but most powder coaters will pre-heat the part for several hours prior to coating to avoid a problem.

Default Outgasing

I know Zeiger. I run into him boating all the time. He has a purplish/yellow flat deck Cig with "Instigator "on the side. Real nice people.
Paul Everet has World Class Marine. We went to the BVI's together last year. Paul has built a couple cats even built the hull, deck and liner himself. Has his own molds. He says he is doing pretty good with the marine drive hardare etc. I know he is finihsed with the boat building end.

The outgassing only occured on the clear coat. you would think that it would have outgassed on the first coating.
