Arkansas Race Recap

Ozark Roar a Huge Success
Date: 25 April 2007
When you think of southern states you might not immediately think of Arkansas, but good ol’ fashioned southern hospitality is what the residents of Greers Ferry and neighboring towns showered on the 18 OSS boats that arrived to race on Greers Ferry Lake this past weekend.
OSS Ozark RoarThe first Ozark Roar, sponsored by the chambers of commerce of Greers Ferry, Clinton and Fairfield Bay, drew over 10,000 spectators. They watched from the shore, from boats, from residential decks and from floating docks. Some even braved the cold water and watched while submerged in the lake! Without fail they were inquisitive, enthusiastic and excited to have OSS racing in their community.
On Saturday the water was calm for testing. The multi-turn course was definitely a driver’s course with sweeping turns that could be taken at full throttle. That calm wouldn't last, however.
A weather front moved into Arkansas early Sunday, bringing with it 20 mph winds and unexpected stronger gusts. The crane operators did a masterful job against the relentless wind as they put boats into the water.
When the first race began at 1:00 whitecaps dotted the lake and sections of the 6.42 mile course were bumpy. In the first start the #111 DoublEdge Motorsports team of Ryan Beckley and John Talley in a new 30’ Skater with just two hours of test time shot to the front and never looked back. Chris Marshall and Dennis Berry in #18 Bermuda Berry Cuda pushed hard but never managed to catch that new Skater.
Also in the first start were the Vees. It was a rematch of the Hatfields and the McCoys – Fountain versus Outerlimits. This time it was the team of Joe Sgro and Mike Fiore in the #90 Outerlimits that won the checkered flag. As Martin Sanborn likes to say, the Outerlimits team “found some speed,” defeating the #30 Miccosukee Indian Gaming team of Brett Furshman and Reggie Fountain III.
The second start featured the Vee Lites. Larry and John Kostelac in #51 Wild Ride moved to an early lead but went wide in a turn during the first lap, allowing Allen Campbell and Matt Jones in #83 Screamin’ Eagle to pass and pull ahead. Screamin’ Eagle captured their second victory of the season, followed by Wild Ride, #29 Typhoon and #10 Popeyes/IMCO.
The green flag was flying high and throttles down in the battle between the new 850 Cat Class. Billy Mauf and Jay Muller of #5 WHM lead from the start but their fortune turned when Joey Gratton and Steve Page of the #31 Hard Rock Casino Biloxi made their move never looking back securing their first win of the season. Team CRC were on the heals of both boats the entire race.

The second start of race two featured the Cat Lite Class. Stan Ware and David Wade in the #13 Popeyes Famous Chicken lead the entire race with last years National Champions #00 Motley Crew breathing down their neck. Biloxi's winner #2 Peppers took second with #123 Shocker securing third. "The fact is that any team out there at present could and will be on the top podium next race, it is that close." Says Stan Ware.
“Ya’ll come back now” is what the residents said to OSS after Sunday’s race. We look forward to it!
