Hey Guys,
Congrats on some great racing. If I may offer an opinion here. it is probably safer and better to yellow flag the race and reset the wondering bouy. One race we were in, the bouy was hit and deflated, leaving it anyones guess as to were it went. It can get pretty confusing as a mix of different class boats hit the turn at the same time. Brad and Kevin figured it out and ran the appropriate circuit. Thus I am not sure that anything should have been done differently. The boats all have GPS, they all have the turn coordinates and shoudl abide by them.
Unless the buoy was gone when they arrived on the parade lap, they knew where it was. I figure they were racing for the lead and were doing anything they could to either protect or improve their position. When coming up to the corner in question I would not doubt that they got close to the turn boat, it is only natural. They let the heat of the moment dictate their actions and broke a rule of engagement, thus the penalty is just. The promoter cannot control every aspect of the race circuit and the drivers have to use their judgement when things do not go as planned. Personally I think it is great to see a santioning body step to the plate and give out penalties for what they deem an unsafe situation. That is the way it should be, sucks for the three guys who were racing for the lead and doing everything they could to get an advantage, I completely understand why they would have done what they did. But in the end, if their actions while racing put others (especially non-racing event participants) as risk, there should be a penalty. With all of that stated, I am sure the view from the corner boat and the view from the racing boats were very different, thus I would expect quite a bit of controversy regarding this decision (if it stands). On the other hand, it appears Team LaveyCraft is well off the pace and unless they can turn that around ASAP, it would most likely not effect the final outcome significantly. Rick |
Randy won't have a problem with it. He has stated for years that the strict rules enforcement is what he likes about OSS.:)

Youre right, Randy doesnt have a problem with it, he is just glad to compete with several other boats vice by himself. |
I know the rules in both SBI and APBA were that at any time no race boat can come closer then 50 yards to any stationary boat either a start/finish or turn bouy....I don't know if OSS's rules are the same...but I would think it would be along the same lines....

Just call me GPS
When Kevin and I ran the first parade lap I picked fixed points to navigate the course. The missing turn 4 bouy was the water tower at the east end of town. There was no GPS needed.
