Here's where I'm probably gonna get beaten up .... I'm one for shorter courses.

I feel it would make for closer racing. With shorter straight aways, it's will probably come down to more skill in the turn then just the speed in the straight. You all know I am usually on a turn boat so if it appears I'm getting a little board, what do you think the fans are feeling? However, I do feel the course for ocean races should be longer than the flat water races. But you also need to take into account then when on the ocean, how do we know who is just at the beach and who came to watch the races? The sponsors & organizers need to see large groups of people on shore for the races. If there is $10,000 people there to watch the races, it is more impressive to see them spread out over 4 miles than it is if they were spread over 5 miles.

However, I have many conversations about this with some racers, and it seems that most I spoke with about this would rather longer course with less laps than shorter courses with more laps. In reality, it comes down to the SHOW the race puts on. Which will put on the best show to keep the races coming back to that town.

Below is how is went in 2012
  • Ocean City: N/A
  • East Tawas: 5.5 mile course
  • St Clair: 4 mile course
  • Port Huron: 4.55 mile course
  • Solomons: 4.6 mile course
  • Jupiter: 5 mile course

I tend to agree with Mark, the longer courses are more fun. Sunny Isles was 6. something if I remember and that was a blast. Big long straightaways to let the Tman do his thing.

Being a driver, I like the short courses too.I just am thinking from a fans perspective here.In the ocean races, I think it makes sense to have all the boats out on the course at once;and provides a much better show.

Being that there is 8-10 classes being offered, where are all the pace boats going to come from to have a clean start for each class? Is it even possible to get 8-10 starts off before Miss Geico, etc coming around and being on top of the classes waiting to start? Safety is paramount and since we live in the "spill a cup of coffee on your lap and sue McDonald's" society, it should never happen that all boats be on the course at the same time. Ideally, with boat counts being around the 40 range, you should have two races only, approx 20 boats each with the mendoza line being at 100 mph. The shorter courses give the fans the treat of the true skills that a driver/throttleman possess or dont. All the longer courses do is show that the throttleman can hold back the sticks....BORING

There were 8 to 10 classes back then too...OPEN,MODIFIED,PRO-STOCK,STOCK,C,B,A,FACTORY...just like now the bigger classes had way fewer boats. So they used to group classes together for the starts...OPEN,MODIFIED,PRO-STOCK....C,B,STOCK...A,FACTORY...starts with 10 to 20 plus boats were also very exciting for the racers and fans!..and the courses were not that much longer than we have now.Today,we could start 1,2,3...4 and SVL...5 and 6.Again negotiating lapped traffic created plenty of passing opportunities.I remember in one race we were in 8th place in A class at the end of the first lap,but made some moves in lapped traffic, got all the way to 2nd.The boat leading made an outside move while lapping a boat going into turn one on the final lap,we dove under both of them and came out in the lead and won the race!Again I am only suggesting this for the ocean races, and this just my just my opinion.

You know damn well that isnt true. Unless its DEAD calm (the ocean generally isnt) the throttleman will not just sit there holding the sticks. Mark and I had a BLAST in Sunny Isles on a longer course, pushing each other out down the straights, choosing different lines because of all the room, it was great! Besides then theres that much more beach/businesses that get to see the race.
And for anyone going to the awards....do yourself a favor and do NOT tell my father short courses are better....hes still annoyed we do these weird things called "laps" :lolhit:
