Default F1 Stand off boxes

I have a friend that is building a new Y2K Superboat and is considering racing in OPA or possibly F1 with APBA or SBI. I know SBI and APBA are working on similar F1 rules and that the Box issue and X dimensions are still being discussed. Hopefully they work this out and F1 boats will use the same configuration to race with both groups.

My question is: What does the box do for the boat? Does the box add speed or is it mostly a handling issue?

As a pleasure boat, would the box be wise to add?

Are there any hulls that don't react well to a box being added?

Thanks for the advice.

Ron,
A box works different on every boat...
The main thing that I have seen is a big plus in handling on step bottom boats, and some speed advantage. The speed advantage also changes by the height that you have your drive. In flat water you can run a higher drive height then you can in the rough. In the rough as soon as you lower the drive height for better handling you give up speed. Again the main difference I've seen in testing is much better handling in the turns with the drive further back in the cleaner water especially in a step bottom boat and safer racing.

Ron,

Do tell your buddy that the swept skeg lower from Mercury for the bravo slows the Y2K down. I think it does make the boat handle better having driven one with it but both Fast Eddie and John Jr. both said it slowed there boats way down by just adding it to the package. I think John Sr wanted to build one with the ITS package. He may have done it already. I am not sure. There are a few guys that could answer your questions better in the Superboat forum on this board. If you need any other help with this, you know where to reach me.

I really cant see how raising the X with a box is going to make any boat handle better, I think its ridiculous to have a box on a boat that is to race in any class called "FACTORY", I don't think the ITS is even offered on the 496 package. Unless
both Sanction Body's agree on this issue it's going to be as it always was, Frank Racing by himself and everyone else racing APBA. I feel their is a good attempt to get this class back together but their is still to many variables and thats what broke the class apart to began with.

Eddie,
I agree and also think it is a good start and could become something great.I think if we all stay positive with good in-put we can make it work.

Hey Ron,

All F-1 issues aside ,I have tried a box on a Y2K and my hull did not run well with it

I am sure it has been mentioned before but in the "old days" of Factory Racing boxes were allowed on non-step hulls and step hulls were not allowed to run boxes. It brought a level of parity to the class. APBA and SBI should get on the same page and institute the same rule. I figure that the class has gone full circle with the adoption of the one and only 496 package, why not complete the process.
I remember the Tsunami Sutphen giving the stepped hull guys a run for their money.

RLW,

I have to totally agree with you. I have stated that same thing before and it was always pushed aside.
