IRONMAN 10-05-2007 09:08 PM

I see 2's often but 4+ only a few times a year and that was a real thrill in the 24 at 75+. Have not been able to really challenge the 28 yet it is very sticky even in 2' s.

Joepaws, that's a classic. I would ride in true 5s as long as I was was a boat like yours with a pro at the wheel like Jo. I imagine that was quite a ride!

nah the heck with that. i like flat water and 91-92 calm and cool all the way. i dont know how u people like getting banged around it sucks.

tomcei 10-06-2007 05:47 PM

to me flat water seems boring.
It's like riding a nice motor cross bike across a parking lot.
Sailing thru the air jacks me:cool-smiley-011:

Here's a couple of progress pictures. Empty bilge, 525SC ready to find a new home, oil pan notched to fit the notch. It's coming along.

Flat water is the reason they invented the Hydrostream... :D

Dude! Sweet! 10-07-2007 02:06 AM

Tom, just give me a couple days notice so I can think up a BS story for work and my wife and we're on!

tomcei 10-07-2007 07:27 AM

I love it!!
We can hook up in the later part of the day if that makes it easier.
I'll let you know.
Keep the pics flowing:cool-smiley-011:

There are quite a few boats that are fast. The real trick for me is to have a fast boat that rides like these Panteras do and does not begin to come apart. That being said, I am no hury to get out into true 5 footers!:D

Sure thing Will! A little nostalgia from seeing the good old 525 up on a pallet? :)

That was/is a good engine. We never had any problems with it. It always ran well and that little blower made a great sound!

MIAMIBOYZ 10-09-2007 12:26 AM

Sean the oil pan came out awesome. Keep the pics coming. Btw, where is Casper in all of this.

I was actually standing next to Casper when I took that photo of the oil pan. That thing is a beast! I could look at the bottom end of that motor all day... (Don't tell my wife :D )

Here's a couple of photos of the new motor (aka "Casper") before it left Miami and back in the good old days. I may not have the Mig, but I have a little bit of it's spirit our here in CA!

Everything looks awesome Dude!

Are those the CMI Unitops that you modified? what is the power gain on them vs the sectioned manifolds like the Dana's ??

I am really struggling with exhaust choice performance vs low cost, thanks!

Dude! Sweet! 10-10-2007 12:51 PM

Thanks Mike! It will look even better under a bad-ass scooped race hatch!

Those are CMI's. That's what was on the boat. I've been told, by people I trust, that the SMI Gen III make significantly more power than the CMI unitops. People do love to argue about it though!

But, I had the CMI's and it was a grand to modify them, vs. buying SMI's and doing the tails, so this is the route I went for now.

Stormrider 10-10-2007 12:54 PM

mike, i think w/ the power you're putting in, you could use the SM GenII. Something nice about a 5yr warranty.
They don't look to bad eiter.

Great news on that also, I have a buddy that runs an exhibit company and they will crate the hatch and may be able to help with negotiating freight. I'll try to get you the best deal possible ........ stay tuned!! :ernaehrung004:

It will probably run better under a race hatch as well. I am sure that Griff passed this info on to you, but I think that the 525 was starving for air. I asked Jo about changing the hatch when I had it because it didn't seem like there was any way to get more air into the engine room with the current hatch. Jo told me to try something to see if the engine needed more air, so I did. If you are running at or near full throttle and just crack the engine hatch open a very little bit, the engine picks up a few RPMs and a little speed all by itself. Jo told me that the current hatch would not hurt the engine, but it may sacrifice a few RPMs on the top end, which it did. I found this out just before selling the boat, so I never changed the hatch. I had Purnell do the test run with Griff when he came to see the boat becaise I was sick, but I asked him to point this out. Hopefully he did, but I am not 100% sure and never gave it a second thought until now, when you mentioned changing to a race hatch.

With a race hatch and those dry pipes, this new engine is really gonna scream! Please keep the pictures coming and be sure to post a video when it is together and running.

Griff 10-11-2007 03:38 AM

Jo also told me about cracking the hatch an inch or so. I did it and never really saw a noticeable difference unless it was real hot and humid out.

Dude! Sweet! 10-11-2007 11:16 AM

Hey thanks for the info! I don't remember Griff telling me that, then again, I had just driven straight from California to Omaha (31 hours) and turned around and drove straight back (27 hours), so Griff could have told me that there was a leprechaun in the anchor locker and I probably wouldn't have remembered! :D

SDR_John 10-11-2007 11:25 AM

I got that leprechaun out of the anchor locker, somewhere in Utah, when you were in the bathroom... :p

Dude! Sweet! 10-11-2007 11:36 AM

HA! Oh man! Thanks for getting my back man! :D

I think I missed a post along the way. Sean, are you buying Mike's race hatch? Mike, did you find a used hatch or is Pantera making a new one for you?

Dan

Dude! Sweet! 10-11-2007 04:23 PM

Jo's making him a new one. So now I'll have parts from TWO of the most well talked about Pantera's bolted to my boat! :D

How's the Ol' Mig doing?!

bouyhunter 10-11-2007 05:22 PM

Sean - engine is looking great!!! Your gonna have a Monster.

I'm still working away on your old boat. Got paint in the bilge now. I've gone through and doweled and resined and glassed any unused mounting holes in the bilge, stripped the exterior of the transom and did a little massaging back there, it's ready for paint. Right now I'm working under the hull filling and scratches and nicks. Up until yesterday it's been in the 90's here, so this has been a sweaty nasty dirty job. Now all of a sudden we're in the mid 50-60 range. Don't know how much I'll be able to get done this weekend.

Tom, I'll try to start a thread this weekend, and yes, I do have pics:D
For the past few weeks, I've been at the stage of every weekend I've been working on it, but the pics would look the same, the detail things that when you see it in person vs a pic, you'd notice. You know, when you fill something with duraglass, sand it out and feather it in, and there is a small void or "pock mark", the pic never shows it, but the eye will.
This means you need to go back and fill it again. And sand, and feather... Maybe I'm just being too anal about it.
I'm finally getting into the "re-construction" and have something that shows progress instead of tear-down.
My motor guy called me today, and my block is almost ready, heads are done, and cam is on order. It was a standard 330hp 454, and I'm gonna bump it just a little with the cam/carb setup. I don't want to go crazy with this one - just reliable. In a year or two I'll build a monster for her.

Dude! Sweet! 10-11-2007 08:24 PM

Right on Tim! Go get 'er!

And by the way, I only take responsability for the marine silicone on the outside of the boat! :D

Gee, thanks... You *****!...
just kidding bud, I've done it before myself for a quick fix.
You'll be glad to know I've spent hours crawling around under that hull, scraping every last bit of it out, grinding it with a sander, and rubbing enough acetone onto it that I was inebriated on the fumes ( of course I was drinking beer the whole time, so my arguement for that may be futile). I'm working small areas at a time, and I'm not an expert in working with this stuff - but it's fun to learn on the fly. I learned pretty quick that too much hardener means the mix hardens before you can get it off the pallete and onto the boat.:D
It's coming along well, and if my plans and budget align, you'll be amazed at what I have in mind for the old girl.
I'll try to start that thread on Sunday - I've got a project at work that is gonna require me to work the next few Sat.'s so I may be done until spring.
But, I have a few plans...:D

Sounds like you are really starting to make progress. One question, was that year 454 the 4 bolt block? I know the more recent ones were not.

Check! and copy that .... it's unbeleiveable that the hatch on ths 2003 looks brand new, seems perfect wherever I look at it and it's a work of art the way the factory molds the scoop and the NACA ducts into it along with the spring actuated relief doors in the back. Plus it's super light .... like Dude said Jo is going to make me a new rec hatch with the Pantera Racing embroidery on the sun pad. I'm going to put an aluminum swim platform on it as well to finish out the back end. Dude is gonna love this hatch .....

Dude! Sweet! 10-12-2007 12:03 PM

Mike I get jealous every time I look at your avitar photo! I love that interior!

Tim, I figured the silcone (only total of maybe a foot cumulatively) would be better in the bottom than sea-water! :D

And Chris, didn't you put that motor in the boat?! :D :D :D

Where's your boat in the LG poker run photos?!

My engine guy had a chart for this, and that was the year it could be either a 2 or a 4 bolt.
So, we didn't know what we were going to find until we tore it down.
This one happens to be a 4 bolt.

Sounds cool! The Mig is at the shop. We're looking into adding drop down seats to the race bolster. My motor guy is working on some options incase my Donzi sells w/ the motor. Is Casper the motor that just came out of the Mig minus the blower or is it a motor that Albert used earlier? That's a nice hatch on the Shogren boat.

Dan

Dude! Sweet! 10-12-2007 02:58 PM

Casper is the motor that was in the Mig before the big monster (not sure what it's name is, I'd just call it "Sir"...).

I thought about the blower motor, but decided that I didn't want to get murdered by my wife... :D

Maybe next year!

You got a a nice boat for sure. I like the combo of race bolsters up front and pleasure seating in back. I got close to working out a deal w/ Scott but not close enough soon enough. :ernaehrung004:
