Pantera at SCOPE Poker Run

OK, finally got some pictures for you guys from last week's poker run.

We ran the long course that went Long Beach, Avalon, Newport, Los Alamitos, Long Beach. Around 100 miles. My buddy Hugh (former owner of the world famous Pink Flamingo Top Gun) ran the boat with me.

It was a perfect day and conditions were pretty glassy for the guys with the big HP who left in the first wave (it was a staggered start with boats with big power and over 35 feet in the first wave and under 35 feet and first timers in the second wave). The pacific did give us a nice 3' roll at times that was pretty well spaced out, but most of the bumps were coming from the prop wash of 100 boats, 1/4 of which were probably running Arnesons or number 6s.

We made it to the island in 26 minutes (including slowing down to check on a well known 40' Skater that broke) running the boat, roughly 30 miles, flat-out. We then ran flat out side by side with a 36 Baja about 3/4 of the way to Newport (another 30ish miles) before I discovered that I was low on fuel. So we eased off and headed into Newport to refuel (which is nearly an hour in and out). As we were heading in, Hugh turned to me and said, "Man, Pepe would be proud of this boat today, you ran the shet out of it and she ran flawlessly the whole way!"

So, I want to take a minute and once again thank the Nunez for building the best rough water 28 around. I had an awesome weekend and I owe it, in large part, to my bullet proof 28 Pantera! Thanks guys!

Here's some photos of us representing for the Pantera family in the big blue!

Here's a few more. Hugh ran the boat after Newport, so I'll let him pick up the story of the up hill run, if he's so inclined.

how those flip ups work?

Dude! Sweet! 10-04-2007 01:20 PM

They work suprisingly well. You just have to get down behind them, but I'm pretty pleased with them.

By the way, I forgot to add the link for all the photos from the run, in case you guys are interested.

You were reading my mind and thats a tough thing to do sometimes. Might put a pair on this winter.

bouyhunter 10-04-2007 04:49 PM

Looking good!!!

Dude! Sweet! 10-04-2007 04:49 PM

Thanks guys! I freaking love that boat! It's such a little bad ass! I'm really looking forward to my new Miami Boys HP. It's supposed to be ready to run in about two weeks. Can't wait!

I just sent the drive back to Imco (nice that they're local) to get it freshened up before we put the big bang in front of it.

And just to be clear on the flip ups. They definately work. To be honest, I didn't love the look of them initially, so if they didn't work, they wouldn't be up while the boat was running! :D

rchevelle71 10-04-2007 07:03 PM

Boat looks great, and glad to hear your getting Alberts power, be careful with that thing!!!!!!!!

Dude! Sweet! 10-04-2007 07:23 PM

Ha! I've got the NA motor. That blower motor is to much for my old sled! That thing was born to run in a race boat!

tomcei 10-04-2007 07:46 PM

Way to go Sean.:cool-smiley-011:
I sure want to do a run like that as well.
I look foward to your new mtr project, remember lots of pics (eye candy)
You must help feed your horse power junkies brothers:D

MIAMIBOYZ 10-04-2007 07:51 PM

Nice shots Sean, you would have been flying with my motor that day in those waters. Nice wot water for these 28 Panteras looks like 2/3`s....

Dude! Sweet! 10-04-2007 07:52 PM

I'm going to stop by the shop tomorrow and take some photos of the 525 out of the boat (Its already out) and the empty bilge.

We sent the pan out to get modified (for the notch) today and the exhaust left yesterday to get "dry-piped" (the CMIs are going to be converted to dry all the way out). The drive is already at Imco for a refresh. Can't wait!

The 565 should be going in early next week and hopefully I'll be testing either next weekend or the weekend after. Whooma!

Albert, you know how bad I wish I had Casper on board when we were running next to that Baja!!!

It was a little roll and lots of prop wash. Once we got out on our own, I basically buried the throttles the whole way. We did get some good air time, but the copter missed it. I guess the Baja guys have some video. I'll have to bug him to put it on youtube.

Even so,

Albert is a hell of a guy, and builds a hell of a motor, have fun with it.

Couldn't agree more with each of those statements. Albert is the man! And I'm dying to get that motor in the boat!

That Pacific ocean water is awesome when you get 3 ft'rs at 12 seconds apart. You gotta get to Miami and have Joe take you for a ride in the Atlantic in gnarley white capped 4-5's and you'll have a whole new appriciation for your boat. What the heck am I doing in the Pantera section again

Dude! Sweet! 10-04-2007 08:33 PM

I was down in Miami in July and caught a quick ride (a VERY quick ride! :D ) with Albert in the Mig... I'm a believer. I like it all!

Stormrider 10-04-2007 08:50 PM

Sean, dry all the way?
You need to take a video w/ a bluetooth mic hooked up to the transom!

Dude! Sweet! 10-04-2007 09:13 PM

You know it brother! Someone was at the shop today and said "man that's going to be loud and obnoxious!" and my buddy who's doing the work replied "It will match the owner!" :D

I'm also getting a set of custom removable (or more accuately installable) donkey dongs made up, so I can do some family boating if I want.

Amen! What a wonderful weekend of high octane filled boating enthusiasts walking across the Pacific for the SCOPE Poker Run. Sean handled the long course trip out to Avalon with ease, considering we were being tossed by the wakes of the faster boats. We had 'er pinned from Queen's Gate to the 1st stop. Picked up a set of cards and off to Balboa with sticks forward. I noticed the motor stuttering off a few holes that we fell into. A quick glance of the fuel gauge and we dashed for the nearest fuel dock in Newport.

I took the helm North towards the LBC, giving Sean's palm a rest from the jerking of the stick. I blew past the card stop once the ocean started to pick up 'round Palos Verdes. We were hitting some good-sized rollers that threw the little Pantera in the air...1001...1002...1003...1004 hit and up again for more. It's a great feeling to be in "the zone" banging surf @ 60MPH and clearing the crests.

I leaned over to Sean after we had slowed and said "this l'il boat is a testament to what the Nunez family can produce. Here we are pounding the crap out of an 11 year old pleasure boat like it is a lightweight racer. Outstanding!"

Thanks for making such a memorable weekend! I am still kickin' myself for not following through on the Shogren boat.

Hugh

They worked great if you were sitting down in the bolster. If you are standing, you are better off with them down.

Griff 10-05-2007 03:34 AM

Awesome pics Sean. Can't wait to see what she does with the new big power. The boat looks great and its in the water it was made for. Pantera makes one tough boat and that 525SC just won't quit.

So why is it everybody that buys a boat from me makes it go 15mph within a year?? My 24 Outlaw was a 65 mph boat when I sold it to Outlawcowgirl and she ran 79mph in the LOTO Shootout this year. I think I'm just going have to make the AT a lot faster so I don't have it happen again:D:D

MIAMIBOYZ 10-05-2007 09:21 AM

Sean and Rick, thanks for the compliments...

Dude! Sweet! 10-05-2007 09:22 AM

Scott, you just take care of that AT like you took care of this Pantera and it will be so clean when you sell it that nobody's going to care how fast it is! :D

do urself a favor and dont listen to him about going for a ride with jo unless u are wearing a diaper. jo took me for a ride in my 36' 1 time in real 5 footers and i almost dookied :hitfan: in my pants. we were doing 81 82 mph on top of 5' waves and he still had throttle. i made him slow down. i couldn't take it lol when he slowwed down i was out of breath like i ran a relay race. he is 1 hell of a driver and the boat is a complete beast.

Dude! Sweet! 10-05-2007 10:57 AM

Yah, next time I come to Miami, I'm going to try to talk Jo into breaking out the F2 boat for a little show and tell! :D

Seems like when I lock into the bolster to run hard, I'm actually lower in the seat than when I sit on the seat (check out the photos and where my arm and shoulder are). The seem to work pretty good. And it's funny, we always run with the passenger seat bolster up, so it's like half sitting half standing. Most of my buddies that find it comfortable are 6'2" or taller, but it works good. It lets you rest a little, but still allows you to use your legs to keep the shock out of your back.

I would pay money to tear it up in water like that!!! :cool-smiley-011: When I get bigger water I get the 2-3' washing machine whitecaps!

DS the boat looks great!

I have never been on board with Jo, but been on with several of his driving school graduates, and I can tell you, those guys could drive:ernaehrung004:

3' at 12 seconds... Fun to run in, but like eskimos who have 100 words for snow, we have a word for those conditions... we call it FLAT! :D :D :D

I have a standing offer to any member of the Pantera Family... You make it to HB, the boat is in the water and there's a ride waiting for you, on me, anytime!

LOL... my point was I have only been out in spaced rollers one time. They were 3-4 footers and I was a passenger in a 19' boat. I will admit i was scared at first but within minutes I was having the time of my life!

Jump...get air...land...accelerate...repeat :D

OL40SVX 10-05-2007 01:22 PM

Sounds like an awesome time and great pics!! Those 28's are awesome boats. I've always wanted one. I've run with enough of them to see what their capable of, more than you can imagine!

Mistake #1 I should have personally delivered the boat just to get to run the pacific, would have been worth any cost to get it there with the exception of a possible divorce:cool-smiley-027:

KICK AZZ photos Sean. I'm very impressed by the durability and performance of that 525SC. The new power is going to be TITS IN THE WIND my friend.........(.)(.)..:D

Have you sold the 525SC yet?
