why cant i see the recess on the port side?
btw, can you refresh my memory of the function(if there is one) of the recess?

The insert to form the recess had not been removed from the side of the boat yet.
If it was part of the mold you wouldn't be able to get the hull out of the mold.
I think there are really only for a unique look.
