Project Black 24 From Miami

Well idk who remembers my story from a few months back but i bought the black Pantera 24 from Miami and brought it home and let me tell you it has been one problem after the next with this dam boat.. After the motor blew on my first ride out, i looked at a few other 24's in the area and saw that the dumbass who built mine totally eliminated the steering console and it was totally uncomfortable to drive. So i decided to fab one up and glass it. Brought the boat to Frankie at Fiberglass Plus in Point Pleasant and he totally reworked my old dash. While we were at it, we decided to make some foot wells and blow through the front bulkead and recess them. He fixed some rot while it was apart. Repainted and new non- skid, I thought the boat was ready for its re-assembly. The motor is still at the builder and we are estimating 700- 725. So with all that power in a little boat, i needed to make sure it could handle it... well another can of worms.. I started poking around the back well the preivous owner had made platforms covering the stringers and needless to say, they were all rot. So I cut them out. Next i found huge air pockets on the outsides of both stringers... i opened them up and sure enough, they were wet. Dug a little further and found no wood up by the tank. I called Frankie back over and he said cut out the floor... well I did and guess what... All rot all the way up to the cabin, so here are some pics and ill keep everyone informed..

Stormrider 10-27-2011 07:24 PM

GEEZ!!!! How much do you have into this thing so far?

rebcammaz 10-27-2011 07:24 PM

Totally contiue, that last pic is the foam from under the tank. All the rotted stuff is out and the grinding has begun already.

Looks like most of everything that can be wrong is being take care of... I'll be keeping an eye on the thread to see how she turns out and runs.

That was a one off boat from the Bahammas, they were making a scale model of it to try and sell some here, idk what happened with it.

Fast Shafts 10-28-2011 07:06 AM

Yea... its tough trying to buy a boat on the cheap.
The other thread in here w/ the guy who bought the '77, and is re-doing it. If doing it for the love of the project, and that is what you are buying it for, that's one thing...

When i bought my 24 in 2004, it thought it to be in nice shape, even knowing the compression was low in a few cylinders. Barbie Nunez was w/ me when i went to look at it... and she had her dad and bro on the phone during the look through. Boat went back to pantera for a clean up and go-over. Still, after the 1st season, i had to build a new engine, rebuild the drive to handle the new power, and fix the weak floor(which jeff had done again, since the job i had done was lame).

I continuously look at the classifieds, thinking of a way to get back into a boat... a 1970 sutphen project asking $2000, or a finished 1979/2005 sutphen in CL asking $10500. Probably by the time i'm done w/ the project i'd have 10-12into it. And for another 6-8k i could be back in my old 24 pantera, that i know, but would rather be in a 28 pantera for another 6, which would be more $ cause it will need something!

Sorry for the rant... now back to the project at hand...

Sorry to hear about the run off bad luck, but what you have done so far and what you are doing now looks Awesome...

onesickpantera 10-28-2011 02:13 PM

Work looks great so far! While you have the interior tore down you may want to consider making it a sit-down boat. I modified my seats so they're sit downs and it was the best thing I did. The shallow cockpit makes the 24 a perfect sit-down boat IMO.

You can't argue the fact that those guys make a good lookin black boat. Keep goin looks great. Came close to buying one myself. You out there Jo? Put some motors in that thing and run p3 with me next year.

lowblue320 12-20-2011 05:13 PM

I believe this was my first boat and Pantera. When I first bought it, it had been painted yellow. The originally gel coat under the yellow was a dark blue. I owned it around 1993, it had a 350 and an alpha drive. I actually had the boat taken all apart and redone. It didn't have this windshield when I had it. I had it painted all white and then took it over to Pantera were we Joe and Linda had all the bilge cleaned up and repainted. We added all new flush powder coated cleats, rub rail, powder coated deck rail (which is the same on the boat now), Pirelli floor a fresh interior and steering wheel updated to what they were using at the time. When it left Pantera it looked like a new Pantera completely updated except for the trailer at the time. Once Pantera finished I took it over to a rigger to get fresh rigging. Then a couple of months later after it was totally completed, we went on a Columbus Day regatta weekend and my trailer got stolen. The trailer I originally had made the boat look older so I bought this Tropic Trailer new. With the new trailer under her, she looked all new. Great boat and had a blast with it. I sold it a couple years later to a guy from Ft Lauderdale in which added a fiberglass windscreen, some painted lined on the deck and hopped up 350. This boat brought me much happiness. I hope you get to enjoy it as much as I did.

do you happen to have the serial number anyware in your archives or any pics from back in the day, that would be cool to see it years ago and to prove it is the same boat

ar15meister 01-02-2012 04:08 PM

looks great in black.

P.M. me you email address so that I can try to scan the pictures and send them. I also have pictures of when someone was trying to sell her years after I had it, and it was really ruff, it almost brought tears to my eyes. I kept on thinking all the work that was put in. I will dig for them and try to get them to you. I don't think I have the serial numbers of the boat but I haven't seen any 1979 Pantera 24 SE sitting on an aluminum tropic trailer that was built around the time I had it. Keep in mind that the trailer you have would have to be built in the early 90's if my memories serves me correct. I purchased that trtailer new straight from Tropic Trailer at that time.

TBAG 01-02-2012 05:04 PM

Wow, sorry about your luck but this is going to be so nice when finished. I can't wait to see the finished product.
