The pleats are a tad more narrow than 2 inches. Pretty sure they cut 2 inch strips and sowed them together.

Thanks Rob!

Today the boat went back on the trailer. It was a great step in the process.
Pics of the maneuver:

I was so excited I decided to cut out the transom. Another big moment!
I used the mercruiser template and then used a 1" hole saw to make all the curves and corners.

This weekend I will lower the engine on and start to fabricate the engine mounting crossmember. Also, I will see how the lightning headers fit. I mocked up a header to take some rough measurements:

Looking good!!! Isn't it nice when you start finally putting stuff together.

NewBanana 03-27-2014 08:37 PM

Great job bro!!!

vintage chromoly 03-30-2014 04:24 PM

Another big progress day yesterday.

Rigged up a laminated beam and mocked up the engine in the boat. :evilb:

The lightning headers will clear my hatch by 1/2 inch.

Now I need to fabricate motor mounts.

That 1992 Special Edition needs a bath! lol! That is my favorite of all the Special Edition Mustangs!

vintage chromoly 04-06-2014 12:47 PM

Thanks for all the nice comments guys.

Bought a GIL offshore engine mount on eBay. Got a great deal on it. NOS and only 75 bucks! :coolcowboy:
Also bought some 3/8 angle and flat stock to fabricate the stringer brackets. I'm using grade 8 hardware with nylock nuts. Suffice to say, it's really stout!

Also started fooling with the dry sump pump and accessories. I'm having a custom made dry sump pan made and I have to make a cardboard template for the fabricator.
Some pics of the cradle:

Rob.......Thats a bullet proof bracket mount you pieced together!!.....Also, finding the great little deals (Gil eng mount) is just one example of the little $$$ items
that would add up real quick if you weren't capable as you are.........just think, if somebody was getting $75 hr. to do your boat??...your saving 10's of 1000's
of dollars and getting great joy in the process!......................Nice work Rob!............I'll miss out on the grand tour just because I'm trying to save a buck on the
rotisserie pickup...........maybe someday though!

AnurajShah 04-10-2014 05:15 PM

oooh, that's exactly what I need for an engine mount!

One suggestion ! Cut the 90's off and make them some nice 45's with beveled edges . Be much safer on your knees and feet when working in the engine bay not to mention looking cleaner . Looking great though .

Been block sanding all surfaces for the final time.
Hope to be shooting primer in a week or so.

Also, working on fairing out the hatch.

I agree 100% Pete!

My wife cannot understand how sanding this old resin bucket is fun and relaxing to me but, somehow, it is.

vintage chromoly 06-18-2014 07:10 PM

Had a friend do some artwork for the boat.

He has a special masking vinyl and he cut me a few "pantera" logos.

This is just a printout to check sizing. The boat will have black sides and the word "pantera" will be in white. (Reverse masked over a white elliptical spot)

Hope to be shooting primer in the next week or two and then, right to color.

Nmbr1GMfan 06-18-2014 08:51 PM

My boat had a "Pantera Racing" logo near the same spot that sort of burned itself into the gel. Couldn't even sand it out so I'm going to try this stripe in red and silver. I do like your logo but I didn't like mine and I need something big to cover it.

Decided to reinforce the hatch a bit as it was flexing when I stood on it.
I used epoxy resin for this job.

Next is two coats of dps surfacing primer and more blocking.
The boat is actually pretty straight but I'm trying to see just how flat I can get it.

bobo1 07-05-2014 09:15 PM

Awesome!

scippy 07-05-2014 09:26 PM

Great job Rob!

vintage chromoly 07-06-2014 02:12 PM

Shot the ppg dps primer/surfacer over the epoxy this morning.
I'll be blocking this down all week in anticipation of the final sealer and then some color.

buck30 07-09-2014 03:18 PM

Well we found more rot than just my transom. Looks like another 79 pantera is getting restored in the near future. I'm studying this thread. Any pointers will be appreciated.

Update on the 24-7:

I'm in the thick of the painting right now. It's coming along nicely but this stage takes FOREVER!

I'm using all ppg "a" line product. All in all I have over 20 different containers of different ppg product.
Here's a pic of the shop setup for paint:
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps67112087.jpg

I masked off the deck and bottom and shot a sealer coat of dplf on Saturday morning:

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps50629d2c.jpg
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps91f0f3fa.jpg

Here's the HIN number masked off. I wanted to preserve the integrity of the number and this "window" will only be cleared.
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...psca4f5351.jpg

And here's some color!
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps5c9005f7.jpg

Shot the white for the boot stripe and the "pantera" on the sides:
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps00d39375.jpg

You can see the green tape for the stripe in this pic:
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...psed7a3db5.jpg

Here's the 3m masking vinyl for the word "pantera":
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps2898f339.jpg
I had to shoot a bit more white on the back corners, that's why the boot stripe tape is hanging loose. Gotta wait 8 hours to tape.
