We just finished going through the race course for tomorrows race.

The inspection starts at 7am and our start is at 1215 so we will test some props in the mean time. Hoping for at least the same speed as with the Rev 4.

Good Luck!!!
Stay safe, and don't break anything - unless that's what it takes to win!

Whoops just read that you have time to test before the race. Good deal.

Let us know how the Tempest works!

The Tempest was a disappointment :( Not enough lift, neither bow or stern, Mirage + 27 about the same but faster. We ended up with the labbed Bravo 28 that has a huge slip.

Compared to the Bravo the Rev 4 has wicked acceleration and awesome cornering...

tomas_wallin 09-15-2012 03:51 PM

We did win though!!! :D

Average speed was 75.9MPH on flat water with a not too great prop so I'm very happy!

88bullet 09-15-2012 05:46 PM

congrats on the win!!! you guys did a great job with that boat!!

bouyhunter 09-15-2012 10:36 PM

Congrats Tomas!!

Not bad for a boat that's almost 35 yrs old - with a few mods.

tomas_wallin 09-18-2012 06:39 AM

Thanks guys!

Anyone know of a 496 mag HO PCM for sale, from around 2006 and newer. I want to replace my PCM from 2000 with a newer one, and it must be an original part # since that's one of the criterias for my racing class.

tomas_wallin 09-20-2012 07:04 AM

A short movie from last weekends race, we're in it three times. The time line is a bit off, the first two times we pass by is supposed to be inverted.

The white/blue Pantera is rigged about the same as mine, but it's a 1999 (I think) with a bit more interior left in it and a couple 100 Lbs heavier.

Do the 496's really have that wining sound or is it just these clips?

0.18 / 3.49 and 9.03min

It looks pretty light in the 9.03 clip, right...

Tomas you've got the attitude flying perfect on that boat . That whistle noise isn't the 496 ! That's the air and water celebrating the gentle message that slick hull just gave them when it glided over ! LOL !

Hahaha, that's not even with the best prop. :evilb:

Tested a standard 26 Bravo today. It ran beautiful - almost as good as the Rev 4.

The difference from before was that the boat was empty, 20 gallons of fuel and by my self.

It ran 81.8mph at 5000rpm which gives a slip of about 7%!

Finally got a chance to go for the last test for the season.

I started with the 25P Rev4 (new one since the last one is on the bottom somewhere...) and got 83.2MPH hard at the limiter at 5150rpm and 8% slip.

I also tested the Bravo 26 (same as the last time) and got 81.5MPH

It was very choppy and windy and the Pantera rode awesome!!!

thats very impressive!!! nice job!!!

Original 2006 496 Mag HO with PCM from 2000, with CMI Sport tubes and Gibson mufflers.

Bravo X upper and XR lower.

I bought a PCM from late 2007 that I will try when the waters opens up again. Hopefully it will gain me something.

How do the the mirage 25 plus and bravo 26 compare?

I have only tried a labbed 27 Mirage and it couldn't carry the bow enough - I need 4 blades for that reason.

Planning works perfectly with both 3 and 4 blades though.

what size fuel lines Are you running? What diff does the 1.36 ratio vs stock ratio do to pitch size.

Did ya ever get your boat back together? We'll be out running soon, maybe this sunday, just been working too much.

AN-8 from tank to fuel filter, motor is completely stock besides the headers.

The g/r should make about a 2-3P difference I guess.

pantera232 01-13-2013 04:53 PM

-8 is half inch right? Bc I'm starving mine for fuel I hit 5000 for a couple seconds then she acts as if sucking air... I'm running to electric fuel pumps with psi right bf carb at 11 psi at idle...

IRONMAN 01-13-2013 07:05 PM

3/8 line will support 502 / 500HP with a mechanical pump as long as the filter head has the larger lines. I am not sure on the electric pump systems

how big is the fitting at your tank?? your only gonna flow as much as your smallest hole will allow. you can have 2" fuel lines but only a 3/8's pickup and tank fitting and your just pissing in the wind. Alot of people overlook that part of it

pantera232 01-13-2013 08:00 PM

I have 2 , 1/2 tank feeds, but still was wondering what he's running?

pantera232 01-13-2013 08:02 PM

I have 2 electric pumps one holly red and another I don't know name came on motor but boat has never ran wot wo fuel hesitantation w both pumps running combined.. It runs up to 5000 rpm and then drops then pulls

You need to install a fuel pressure gauge on your
Dash that way you'll know for sure if your leaning
Out the motor or not, also a 496 efi will not go past 5000
Rpm unless you get your ecu remapped by mercury racing

A 496 HO will actually go to 5150 :)

pantera232 01-14-2013 05:26 PM

My motor is carbureted

Since my previous pics in this thread here's a few again.
This is what the bottom looked like when the pad was modified. The plan was to sand it to get the correct finish but the papers just clogged so I skipped it - at that time.

During the winter I have been sanding the bottom to get the finish I wanted from the beginning.
Started out with 320 grit to get it perfectly smooth
http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2a934895.jpg
The longer SB strake is still in place since my strake testing, I lost the other one during the test. It's removed in the following pics.

http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/...ps222fbdd8.jpg
http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/...ps222fbdd8.jpg

And after a finer grit it was time to wet sand.
http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8330563f.jpg

And finished of by wet sanding it by hand and it was done! The finish is only for speed gain purposes, not for looks...
http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/...psb469bffb.jpg

tomas_wallin 02-10-2013 06:46 AM

The lower has got a nose cone from Hydromotive.

It's wet sanded to the same specs as the bottom, straightened and the leading edges is sharpened (enough to cut a piece out of my thumb...).

I got rid of the lower intake and modified the side intakes to make them work (hopefully) with my 3-1/2" prop depth. I made reliefs on the lower intake holes, they were also opened up and I changed the angle a bit. The 4 upper ones on each side were removed, since they will be above the water at speed.
http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/...psd679886d.jpg
http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1f9e9ddd.jpg

I will paint it when it's tested, and all the adjustments needed are made.

AnurajShah 02-10-2013 06:54 AM

looking good!

Tomas your one of my idles but how bout you put a 2 x 4 between those two rear jack stands and tie them together so one of your family members doesn't post a pick of your legs hanging out from under the boat .
Did you notice enough with the extended strakes to justify doing it or did you 86 that idea ?
What do you do for a living ?

The trailer is back under the boat so no worries ;)

I will continue testing with longer strakes when the ice is gone. The nose cone might make everything different so I'll start from scratch again.

I gained a couple mph but didn't do that much testing because of lack of time.
