24 Pantera Racing

I finally finished my 1979 Pantera 24 race rebuild project.

So far the top speed is 79.5MPH with a very limited time to test props, I still have 5 props in my garage waiting to be tested...

The Pantera is completely Awesome as a sit down boat with foot throttle (N-Control from CPPerformance http://www.cpperformance.com/p-13598...-assembly.aspx) and it handles really nice. I haven't got a chance to test it in real rough waters but it handles awesome in some chop and boat waves.

At our first race, two weeks ago I finally had a chance to weigh the boat. It only weighs 3850lbs complete with all racing gear, 30lbs of lifting slings, some fuel, some tools etc. That must be pretty good for an old 1979 right?!

Unfortunately we got DQ’d in the first race since we passed a bouy the wrong way, but in the second race everything went completely fine! As always there were a very limited number of boats in the UL class – we were alone… Sylsjö, with the other Pantera didn’t make it to the race this time.

The only boats that passed us were C-class (international) cats that do about 90-95mph, and the rest of the faster classes that’s 80+mph boats didn’t stand a chance even though we “only” did 78mph at most this time.

Yes, we're still rookies. It's the first time my "real" copilot is racing with me and it's my third race so be nice. :D Still getting familiar with the boat - and racing.

It didn't look that very great... We didn't even feel it, just lost thrust and put one and one together (since a Batboat 28 had stopped in front of us with the same issues...)
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...90721912_n.jpg

The Bravo X drive had 4 hours runtime since new so it was time for a new one anyways :P.

We got a new XR lower that I bolted up a couple days ago and we're now ready for the last race for the season on saturday!

Yup, prop and shaft and a bunch of aluminum.

At least I now have a spare vertical shaft and lower gears. :D

scarab63 09-12-2012 12:27 PM

Did u buy that b1 / imco off lil red? I guess that's headed to Michigan then sweeden. It's a nice drive

Notice any different handling with mod bottom?

It's was a complete Bravo One X, now it's a X upper and XR lower.

Unfortunately I only had 454 with TRS and stand up bolsters with the original bottom, so I have nothing to compare to.

In the race on saturday there's another 24 Pantera (with original bottom) rigged about the same with 496 and Bravo drive so I will post some pics from the race later. We'll see if there's any differences in the attitude.

That's a way to find the bright side of a bad event

OCCJoe 09-12-2012 01:30 PM

original bottom ???? Did I miss something ? What did you do to the bottom ?

scarab63 09-12-2012 06:52 PM

It's got extensive work....sharpen & cut strakes. Notched V
It's all in fiberglass section....pretty interesting
Almost has a pad of sorts now

vintage chromoly 09-12-2012 08:07 PM

that looks like a great time! great job on the boat!

Don't know how I missed that . Now I'm up to speed . I live in Pantera , Superboat , and swap shop . Need to do a little more exploring on OSO ..
Tomas bassed on the post dates am I seeing that you did the build in about seven months is that correct ?
You did some nice work . Being that you did something so detailed and precise did you ever think about putting a step in the boat ? Looks like you have the skill to do it . I'm only asking because I was thinking that a 24/7 stepped hull would preform awesome . Just don't know if anyone has added a step post mold .

Greatlaker 09-12-2012 08:56 PM

Wow Great looking Boat look forward to hearing how the bottom works

Looking good! I can't believe how little the impact shook the boat. I didn't see you adjusting the tabs or trim, I'm guessing you had them set close to nuetral?

tomas_wallin 09-13-2012 12:18 AM

Thanks everyone!

There's still some work left on it that I will take care of during the winter. I needed to prioritize to get it running.

I will keep you updated!

We didn't feel it what so ever, I just heard a small "ting"-sound and lost thrust.

I had it trimmed around neutral and it was still was riding very high.

I accidently got a Merc trim tab pump for my drive trim and it's way too slow (the drive trim pumps are high flow versions of the exact same pump), so I didn't want to trim it out too far since I wouldn't be able to get it back down fast enough if I needed to. This is one of the things I will take care of during the winter.

So far I have used the tabs only when going on and off plane.

Yes, it took me about seven months. I wanted to be sure it would work so I didn't want to doing too radical changes to the bottom - keeping it simple.

Right now I'm planning on extending the inner strakes quite a bit longer, doing the extended parts about 1/2-1" narrower. I was worried about the boat over planning and dipping the bow but that's absolutely no issue. It rides high and very well but with longer strakes I believe it will ride even higher and better - and faster.

I have seen some pics of 24 Superboat bottoms with the strakes going almost all the way to the transom - anyone have any more info about this?

Thanks Mike,

Hahaha no it's not named after me but since my daughters name is Minna it would be a great name.

It's our future sponsor www.tomina.se

Yeah fast trim is a good thing! So, in that video you are running with the tabs all the ways up?

Yes, tabs all the way up.

The Rev 4 (RIP) was an awesome prop - luckily it was standard out of the box.

Is that Jan's boat?

Jan came and looked at mine for his friend while he was in the states last year and said that he had a 24' that they raced with a 496.

Couple pics of my old one is Sweden at a poker run a few weeks back...

That's correct, Jan is navigating for his friend Tony who's the driver.

This is the first race we're both participating at the same time so it will be lots of fun! Especially since both are doing about the same speed.

Oh that sucks it was the prop you lost! Yeah the Rev is my favorite handling prop.

I'd say your bottom work and tab placement paid off. I can't run with the tabs all the way up.

WoW good lookin Pantera Tomas. the colors and layout look sweet

Right now I have no idea of what prop to put on for the race since I have no time to go testing...

Mirage 25
Mirage 27 lab
Bravo 28 lab
Tempest 25
I can also borrow a Hydromotive Indimidator 27

Thank you! I will paint the hatch orange in and out during the winter, right now it's more like "pig pink" as the boat was prior the new paint.

Are the Mirages the standard or Plus? Standard Mirages are fast but they can lose bite in corners.

bouyhunter 09-13-2012 05:08 PM

tomas, just curious, is this a different boat than the one I sent you the hatches for?? I noticed no hatches on this, but not sure if you filled them, or a seperate boat.

Boat looks great! and I'm impressed with the work you've done. Impressive speed for limited testing, hell, impressive PERIOD!!

Yes, it's the same boat. I had the "new" hatches mounted for a couple years and tried to sell the Pantera but without any luck so I turned it in to a race boat instead.

tomas_wallin 09-14-2012 04:15 PM

We just finished going through the race course for tomorrows race.

The inspection starts at 7am and our start is at 1215 so we will test some props in the mean time. Hoping for at least the same speed as with the Rev 4.

I would run the M+ 27 if it's higher speed fewer corners and the M+ 25 if it's tighter and you need acceleration over top-speed.

Just my point-o-two.

onesickpantera 09-14-2012 04:30 PM

Whoops just read that you have time to test before the race. Good deal.

Let us know how the Tempest works!
