Transom is done and so are the stringers! Passed by to see pepe this morning and he's going to rent me the template and I'm going to be cutting the hole myself. More pics as I move along, I will probably be sanding the sides tmm as soon as I take off the rub rail Z |

Jamie, the building is a bit smaller than the previous one but they did have a few boats in there going through the process so I believe they're still producing their same beautiful boats
|
|
I don't like the hatches myself , Couldn't wait to get rid of mine but the only one I ever saw that I liked was when littleshopofhorror did his Pantera and put that flush mounted painted to match hatch in
|
Does anyone know what x dimension is best for TRS? and where to get a jig

Yup, went with closing up the hatches! I think I'm going to like it, it's going to look plain but long and sleek which is what I'm looking for. I think I might have to do some type of bow rail though.
Attachment 497358 This is where I'm at now on closing the hatches and then throwing a matte on the deck to get rid of the old cracks and all the other little things. Have work tmm but ill be back at it on thursday and friday |
Zavier boats coming along nice, im doing the transom and stringers on mine now, same exact hull as you.. if i get a chance ill post some pics tomorrow.
|
No hatches... good choice. going to look sleeker for sure.
You really going to be spending time down there where you'll want the ventilation? |

Sounds good NB! Goodluck
The cabin isnt even done so the ventilation down there doesn't really matter because for the moment it's just storage but I'm thinking of holding on to the hatches just in case I get bored and want to open up the holes again just a little further back maybe. The cabin is going to be my little project for next year, I think I've done enough already this year lol And yeah I think I'm going to really like the outcome. Thanks for the heads up for the bowrail because I was already wondering as to where I can find one so I guess the hunt is on hahaa |

Update! Laid the matte on the deck after we filled the cracks with paste! Also did the battery boxes, came out pretty good. Ill post a pic of them tmm. I'm getting used to the deck without the hatches so I'm liking my choice:thankyouthankyou: |

What about Original bow rails? |
I'm probably going to go with a powder coated one down the middle. Tried to stay original before but now modernizing it a bit:evilb:
|
I hear ya, I wanted to modernize also...But forgot to fill the holes hahah
|
Lol that happened to me the first time I did it so I got stuck with having to leave the antennas out and a few of the switches and stuff so now it's time to fix what I didn't do the first time and trying to remember everything is the hard part hahaa
|
Im in panic mode now lol. The season is right around the corner for us. Im trying to scramble and get this thing done. I hope i like it once its done. Then a few years down the road ill do it over again.
|
We're both on the same boat lol I got started a little late because of when I bought my outdrive and everything but hopefully I'm looking at early to mid may bring done. Memorial weekend down in the keys is always one you try not to miss hahaa I'm actually doing a lot more that what I expected to do this year so I should be good for a bit except for the usual little things that you can't count lol

Never been for Mem. Day, Heard the place is crowded with cops on Holiday weekends:party-smiley-004: http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/...rada/keys7.jpg |
I realized that one day I was taking off the wax with a towel I was standing on and slowly slide to the edge with just the slope of the deck lol and I had a buddy drinking during the regatta and he thought of using my deck as a slip and slide it just turned out to be the best slip and slide he ever used without soap hahaa
There are a lot of cops on those weekends but they usually don't bother unless your being a complete ******* but besides that they're just enjoying the view like everyone else :D |

Sounds like a plan! I'm usually there throughout the summer so you can count on seeing me there for sure!

Zavier Just got the transom done, mocking up the stringers to have them glassed tomorrow..

No tiller arm notch? Running hyd steering & burning the arm off the gimbal assy?
|
nice nice looks like you used all heavy roving on the transom? what layup did you use
|
I'm running a volvo duo prop, no need to notch the stringers I'm hoping... and the transoms layered in 25oz.. It's solid. I was ganna do foam instead of the wood but i had mixed reviews figured I would stay in my comfort zone.
|
Why not plywood for the stringers?
|
Im interested to see how far up the stringer replacement goes and whats going on with the forward bulkhead?? got pics?
Just tore my transom apart lol |
Stringer replacements going up about mid-boat, up front im redoing everything, filling in all the holes, replacing all the wood and glass around the door along with the wood around the front corner section.. and trying to figure out wether to keep or scrap the dash that came on it.. ill shoot some more pics when i get a chance of the floor out and progress.
|
Your not really using tembers for the stringers are you ? Never use 2x8 or 2x10's ! Has to be plywood or high density foam board . Pine will snap the first wave you hit
|
When I Replaced my stringers I used two layers of plywood as that is the standard today.
That said, pantera used 2 by 8's when the boat was built. I doubt, very much, that his stringers are going to snap over the first big wave. Maybe not the optimal way to build them these days but, I'd think they will hold up just as well as the early panteras that came that way when new. |

The past is the past and people have learned from mistakes . You couldn't find a boat builder that You could pay to build using 2x8's . Pepe didn't have The old interweb to look up how too's in the 70's . And maybe the plank wood was built different then and more dense but he sure didn't go down to the Lowes and by an $8 board and call it a stringer . My point is this : he's rite there , even if he glassed it in already a simple zip from a sawsall and a $35 sheat af MDX and it can be Done the rite way . The motor shearing off the 2x8's and ripping through the cockpit killing all its passangers when some poor guy hit a sand bar at 70 would be one hell of a story on OSO thread though ! |
Dimensional lumber has not changed in the last 40 years. Pepe built my boat out of stringers full of knots and they appear to be white pine.
As I already said, we all know that the industry standard is now a lamination consisting of plywood and mat. That said, z's boat will be just fine with the dimensional lumber as a core for the stringers. He's not building a competition offshore race boat but, a small block pleasure boat. Also, my stringers and bulkheads were nailed together with framing nails before they laid the glass. No bedding, no fillets and no adhesive! As far as pepe buying his lumber at lowes......I'm certain he bought it from a local lumber yard as it was nothing more than white pine 2 by 8 dimensional lumber. I could be wrong, maybe he had a source for some "super" trees and used those instead of the readily available dimensional lumber that has been available for over a century. |
I don't care what anyone says I think that foam board would elongate the motor mount holes in about a minute

I am going ro Brute strenth on this one Used rail track sleepers you wont Break then:evilb: and it will handle like its on Rails
|
I used the 2x8 cause thats what was originally on the boat, if it lasted this long it's going to be ok..lol I'm not racing it or anything like that just a weekend spin or two.. It's regular pine, I've heard horror story's of the pressure treated stuff delaminating because of the chemicals.. The duo drive ran great never had one before really impressed.. I do wanna upgrade the props I'm looking at the F6 as a base to start.

As I already said, my stringers were pine! No doubt about it. |
