going to look at the army boat
i am going sunday 3-20-16 after lunch to look at the army boat.
that date can change based off weather or other factors but, i'm looking for a third party to go with me as a second set of eyes, if another day fits someone else schedule that could work, i believe the owner is being truthful with me, and i don't think anyone selling anything would care if a potential buyer arrived with another set of eyes, plus i'd really like another opinion on the structural integrity of the hull let me know your schedule, i'll pay gas buy lunch, etc., boat is in quincy fl. pm me your number thanks, dan should i post this here in pantera or in the general section, |
Hopefully your getting it for a lot less then listed . It's had some hull mods that would cause it to be expensive to turn back into a pleasure boat . Pantera used a lot of wood in their builds all the way up to the last one built so just check as best you can to make sure the stringers and transom sound dry and solid . It's been raced , bumped , jumped , and probably turned on its side several times so just look the hull over for cracks .
I use to jump in and just buy projects . Now I do the math first and show the seller the math figures . $18,000 hull $7500.00 even for a cheep motor $5000.00 paint and body $2000 upholstery $3000 odds and ends you didn't even know you needed ... $35000 in a 24 Pantera not the best but not the worst either ! No seller should ever mind you bringing a second set of eyes to look over a boat .. Good luck , and keep us posted ! |

Look at the side of boat real good , In there first race a boat hit the side and it had to be repaired
|
have u looked at the yellow restored boat listed negotiable at 23,500
not been raced and completely gone through u can spend $ on how u want it and still be under buying a hull only that's been raced |
I wouldn't say that boat was raced hard, and I don't think to many times either
|
not putting down the boat
I raced boats for many yrs and I never raced softly but did take off "hard" just saw a restored boat at 23 vrs a no power boat for 18 and asking if looked at the other |
i keep getting knocked off when i type for a while
finally, i'm in thank you all in advance for responding and for your advice, it will be heeded. near as i can figure it raced in 06 was hit very early on in the season but raced the next day, then was repaired at pantera. it raced in 07 then i think it was back at pantera then poof gone. present owner states he's had it for 3 years. so the missing 5-6 years and how it was stored is 1 of my concerns, as it does not have a cover. the other is it looks like it's had 3 exhausts on it. so possibly rigged 2 time after the original anyone know who had it or where it was for those missing years i'd love to hear from you the offer still stands to come look at this boat with me. paul i'll fly you in and put you at up a nice hotel if you'll do the same for me when cambridge and oxford have their boat race ha! |
I just googled 24 pantera army. there is a bunch of pics of it on the pantera website. it would be something of a collector's item. did you email Pepe and ask his opinion of it?
|
double post
|
Call manny at TNT. he can tell you a lot about the boat. I think he is in service dept
|
You can track down Pepe on Facebook and he may know.
|
Is the boat at a shop? I heard Scott Mander from Intense Marine moved to Quincey,Fl. If he's around , he would be the one to look at it in that area. Good Luck!
|
i will try to call manny on friday
not on facebook, would prefer to speak to pepe but i think he/ they have a lot on their plate right now that yellow boat is nice, but there is another option out there for less if the army boat doesn't make the cut, but i'm hoping it does present owners name is scott,(speed and custom marine) boat is listed in the classifieds |

Easier to buy a boat that has been well taken care of than to try and bring one back. Often less expensive too!

Must admit, I do like my outboards and this new listings caught my eye.....

the deck, on these 24's i need a couple q's answered
1. is the deck and cockpit bathtub one piece? 2. once the bravo came out, the deck must have been changed because the engine room is too short to accommodate engine and transmission style set up (not going transmission just an observation) 2 more questions not deck related, the drain tube pvc that goes from the cabin to the engine room was glassed in real nice in the engine room. 1. does anybody know if that tube is glassed in all the way under the tank or does it just get thrown in there and glassed on the end where you can see it? 2. the drain holes that go thru the bulkheads or fillets are glassed in or just drilled and forgotten? thanks guys for all the help and advice so far. |
Yes it is. They are very tight bulk head to transom. My pullies are within 4 inches of the engine room bulkhead.
There's no way to run a trans unless you put it in a extension box. Like a Imco 12" box. The drains under my tank are glassed in. The holes drilled were just resin and algrip. |

class 6, thanks to di-sect your post
(yes it is) one piece deck cockpit bathtub when you say your pullies are 4 inches from the engine room bulkhead, i measured approx 49 1/2 inches from rear engine mount ears to the bulkhead on the back of the fuel tank a trs set up is about 45 1/2 inches from the rear mount ears on the tailstock to the pullies, so that's your ( within 4 inches of the engine room bulkhead ) |

that's just not true. I ran a mercII trans for years just as the boat came. When I went to the bravo is where I gained more front engine clearance. There are many of these boats still running trans with TRS drives.

To tell you the truth. I think they all are a little different. Mine is a little newer than the army boat. And I picked up on a few differences just from the pictures. I'm sure they did things different day to day

trying to get a few pics up,
cant post pics, wanted to post 4 pics c/w the repair i'm 50/50 on the thing because of the repair and i'm worried about rot because it's sitting outside plus i spoke to some people about what i seen concerning the repair and the possibility of unseen issues that extend past the fix that wont show up till i stuff it or something, and i can't afford to be wrong on the hull if it's fubar or rotted . but it is a cool boat didn't think i'd like the black but it grew on me, got nothing but good to say about the owner, he didn't try to pretty it up or hide nothing and he's easy to talk to, a nice hard working guy. the repair is on the port side and into the deck in front of the fairing it's a little wavy and some print thru on the side and there's a couple long arch shaped spider web cracks on the edge of the deck repair guess i'll make a decision by the end of the week, called the owner today so he didn't think i was blowing him off but got the answer machine thanks again to everyone for the input, and advice i really appreciate it dan |

You can actually see where the bulk heads are. So if thats what you are seeing.... Dont worry. As far as spider cracks... is it just the gel coat that has them? It shouldnt be a issue. These boats are built for ocean racing when in pleasure built. And even more overbuilt for actual racing. When it comes to pantera boats. Not one is the same. Even if they are made to be the same. They are not. My black F1 and the White F1 boat were said to be the same. And they are not. My boat only has a 85 galon tank. The white boat has around 140. The white boat has a few different braces that run from the outer stringer in the engine bay to the hull sides. Mine does not. |
the wavy i see is the repair
the spider cracks are on the edge of the repair that extends in to the deck about 1 1/2 feet i'll bet the pics off to you and thanks for that the repair on the side and deck line up and look like one of those beer sponsors surfboard with a shark bite out of it |

thanks for throwing those up there

Not to rain on your parade, but unless you are getting that boat for around 7k or less, I'd pass.
You will have 40 plus thousand in it to make it decent. I'm speaking from experience here. I have hull #2 and I'm just over 40k with me doing 100% of the work myself, including all the glass, body work and paint. You will be at half the money and 3 to 5 years ahead by buying one of the two really nice and nicely priced 24's in the classifieds. I'm building mine as I enjoy the project phase of ownership. Other than that, it's a fools game to pour money into one of these boats. |

Haven't posted in awhile......
I can tell you this, the 24 Pantera is a great boat, I've owned 2. Like anything else in life, just depends what you want. I like the black race 24 (bulkheads are cool too) but 7-9k is my take. More towards 7 for me but someone might want it for 10. Project, cool hull to start with, turmkey definitely the white one in California. |
The 24 Pantera is a great boat. I had a 2002 with a 496HO. I can't figure out what I am seeing in the one side picture looking down the side. What I'm seeing must be an illusion or something. It looks like a terrible amateur repair. If it is what it looks to be, I would not touch this one.....

Just looks like an old boat that needs everything replaced. Unless your joy of owning a boat is the rebuild process and making something old look new again, I'd keep looking. Seems there are a couple on the market at the moment, maybe an extra 10k on purchase will save you 6 months work and 15k long term?
I think it's a question of what do you really want to do with the boat? Enjoy it and customize/fix a few things to make it special or do you want a big project to rebuild from the bottom up? Remember, it doesn't matter what you have at the end, age and history will always dictate value to some degree. Good luck! RR |
