38 cigarette or 388 Hustler

Anyone ever own one of these how did you like it I have a 99 33 sportdeck now looking for something bigger and faster want more space in the cockpit

baja27 06-05-2007 08:40 AM

My buddies own both . Hustler nice ride in the bays and river. Cig super nice ride in the ocean and bays solid. simlar to a Powerplay. If you go the Hustler way stay with stock power boats are good to high 80's -90 and that's it.

What power do you have in your PP

Goin Nuts 06-05-2007 09:19 AM

Just twin 502 mpi's 415hp great boat just don't know if I want to put the money in it for more hp or just step up looked at a 42 tiger yesterday with 575sc nice boat maybe to big to have fun with I Like the 38 cig top gun Step hull looking for something to get my fix around a 100 + mph Theres a guy here with a 388 that does 130 mph

Indy 06-05-2007 10:19 AM

fountain40icbm had a 388 with some power, shoot him a PM and I'm sure he'll be glad to help out.

customryder 06-05-2007 11:54 AM

a 388 is nice... are you referring to a twin step cig? if so thats the better choice.. I think I would take a 388 (I had one) over a flat bottom cig, if your on a lake, if in the ocean go with the cig. just my 02ct.

Goin Nuts 06-05-2007 12:27 PM

Thanks you just trying to get some advise i like my powerplay just wondering what the best choice would be keep it and put bigger power and change the out drives all of which I am able to do myself or just sell it and buy something done . Not to sure what to ask for it with 2007 trailer

Who has the 130mph 388?

Goin Nuts 06-05-2007 01:23 PM

Its listed on web site www.aqua-mania.com 1998 388 slingshot

cowisl 06-05-2007 01:56 PM

I know of a 38' PP with 750 Cobras with bmax's thats real clean...let me know. It will eat both of these boats alive in rough water

CIG3 06-05-2007 02:46 PM

Take a look at the 38 PP w/ no power on http://www.yachtauctions.com/default.asp

Goin Nuts 06-05-2007 03:51 PM

cowisl is it for sale ? Cig3 i looked at that boat before what the story on the pulse drive ?

Indy 06-05-2007 05:38 PM

I'd take the 38 PP too...but I'm also partial to these boats :)

cowisl 06-05-2007 05:45 PM

Its not that boat, I was referring to No life like it. Thing is mean and in like new condition.

I wondered were it went.Thats the only one I know of thats been above 110mph.

Jigsaw89 06-05-2007 08:26 PM

Strip,
If you could do it all over again, would you opt for the Hustler 388 Slingshot, Cigarette 38 Top Gun or other (used)? Why?

Thanks,
Dan

Theres a lot of things I like and dislike on both ,I am a little abnormal though,I wouldnt be happy with anything anyway:p I can nick pick em to death. If the Hustler had a better bottom for above 100mph I would be a lot more happy, maybe put a Fountain bottom on it:eek: I drove a buddies 01 39 Cig the other day and was impressed, kinda supprized me that it would do 81-82 on 500's,It rides good !! you can tell its a little heavier than my Hustler. The Price it a lot higher on the newer models.

if the Cig had a smother look, no cut outs for cleats, fuel fill stuff like that,a better cabin for the girls, like a head,The new 39 and 41 are looking better for me .

I bet Cig's customer service is better than Hustlers!!

My next boat I hope to have speedmasters on it and they say the Hustler 388 doesn't like and run well with them.

I am liking the 43 Nortech's but ya have to put a bunch of power in them to get them to a 100, there heavy.

It would be 50/50 on buying another Hustler, I would have to make some changes to it:D

One thing about the Hustler when I bought mine there wasn't another one with in 200miles.Like the others youll see a few of the other name brands and 100 Fountains. But the new Fountains are FAST.

Goin Nuts 06-06-2007 07:44 AM

how do the 33 powerplay's handle at the 100 mph mark

Goin Nuts 06-06-2007 07:49 AM

Do you think the 38 top gun handles & rides better at the higher speeds

cowisl 06-06-2007 08:20 AM

I think the 38 pp will take more to get there, but will be rock solid. I know ours is rock solid at 80+ in all conditions. It will also out turn any other 38 stepped hull.

Goin Nuts 06-06-2007 12:44 PM

Well can't find one of them to bad powerplay couldn't keep it together because they sure did make a nice boat would love one of the boat magazine do a side by side test of the 38powerplay & a 38 cig

Jassman 06-06-2007 03:21 PM

my preference of all three, is the 38 PP. My opinion the 38 PP which is about 40' has a beter ride than the 42 Tiger, let alone the 38 Top Gun. I've been on 4 different 388 Slingshots, all with different power, great boat, but not at speeds above 92mph I personally didnt care for the one I was on at those speeds. Also being lighter is not as a good of a ride in the rougher stuff, above 4' footers, compared to the other boats. All great boats, for different purposes and price. You are right, too bad the 38's arent made any more. Jeff

The 38 Top Gun bottom hits a wall at around 110. The Hustler runs well up until about 90. The 38 Cig bottom I'd say is good until about low 100's. There's not many around that run 100+. I'd take the Cig over both boats personally. I dont see how the 38PP, a very nice boat, could ride better than a 42 Tiger though especially a 42X. From what I've heard the Cig customer service is only good if you go through Philly or just bought a brand new boat. I've had very good customer service with Hustler though. For a steady 100mph+ ride I wouldn't suggest any of the three. Now the newer 39 Cig's are another story. If your looking to run well at 100+ in a vee look at Outerlimits or get a cat. There are alot more of them running 100+ than all the others. If you dont need a cabin look at the Cig Gladiators or the Donzi ZR comp. You will get to 100 with less power and less coin, and you cant beat sitting down. Thats my .02

Dan

OL40SVX 06-06-2007 03:48 PM

It kind of all depends on how much you want to spend.

Been in both extensively (Bravo Boats). Powerplay has more meat to it...

TeamSaris 06-06-2007 04:21 PM

I rode in an 07' 38 Fountain with 600s at 103. Very Stable and solid

Answered my own question. It had to have been a regular Tiger by they only made one X with Bravos and it's here in CT. The only other bravo X's are triple boats.

As to the Tiger vs the 38 PP, there are a 2 guys on this board, not mentioning names that also prefered the ride, and has experience on both, and one we all know very well.:D They both are awesome boats, I feel the 38 PP on re-entry is slightly softer. It does feel slightly more top heavy in cross waves, where's the Tiger is slightly more sporty. It's all in what your looking for. I like a heavier boat, alot of headroom in the cabin, and a 38 PP fits this bill, other alternatives are a 39 Nortech which is actually almost 41'. When you get in this league they all have their + & -'s.

OL40SVX 06-06-2007 06:26 PM

But have you guys been in 42X tigers with NXT's or number
6's to compare the ride to a 38 PP? I believe the guy is looking to get into a 100mph boat. A heavy boat with lots of headroom and a big cabin is going to need alot of power to reach those speeds. That means more headaches. As I said before look at Outerlimits even if they're older ones or a sit down if you dont need a cabin. For us we perfer the sit down boats with no cabin of any sort.:D Your right though in which they all have their + and -'s.

Goin Nuts 06-06-2007 06:58 PM

well it's been alot to take in so 38PP is just unavailable hustler is not a good rough water boat fountain must be out equation I'm looking to get somemore space in the cockpit cabin not so important but would like to have one so it looks like the cig would be the next choice or keep the the 33pp and rerig it what about the donzi zr anyone have a 33pp that runs in the 90s how dose it handle

Goin Nuts 06-06-2007 07:00 PM

Oh and by the way you guys are great thanks for all the input

OL40SVX 06-06-2007 07:47 PM

Could you give us a price range so then we can throw out some choices that fit what you are looking for. Then you can get an idea of what is out there.

Ozzie (The Wizard) had one that went over 100, I think he loved it. Check with him, not sure if he ever visits this owners forum anymore since he's move on to a Nor-Tech cat.

PPlay33 06-06-2007 08:29 PM

I am very happy the way my 33 runs over 90. Not much harder to drive than a 500hp boat at 80. Eventually you run out of bottom length, but 100 is very possible in a 33.

Goin Nuts 06-07-2007 07:20 AM

whats it rigged with?

Goin Nuts 06-07-2007 07:23 AM

thers a guy near me with 2 650hp supercharged engines for sale just don't know if it would be money well spent or just taking that money and sell the boat to jump into a newer boat ready to go

baja27 06-07-2007 07:33 AM

Goin Nuts running my Powerplay at those speeds are pretty good you do need to run a little tab in smooth water.
