I built that nearly 20 Years Ago, We had a couple epoxy systems then but the vinylester gave me everything I needed with the Airex, like Excellent impact resistance and a very good climbing drum peel (CDP) with epoxy ,the bonding is strictly mechanical while the ester based resin there is some chemical interaction with the core. ,Btw that boat was @ 1200# lighter than a production 33. Note I love Epoxies and work with them whenever I can.

If Powerplay was still open today ,Danny would be using the epoxies as he was at the end of the line for the ester resins and was demanding more profile control than they could offer (we had many conversations on this) Now all that said ,a lot of the Race Effort went back into the production line, the Bagging full sheets, scale work and ETC.

The weight was about perfect for the design/shape and The Boss was very happy with the way it ran. I could have removed more weight but we were in the Mid 1800# Range with the H&D then.

Thanks for asking.

I think it's because of Powerplay's reputation as a basically unbreakable boat, and Steve1's reputation as one of the top glass men in the business.

I've been in this thread many times gleaning knowledge. I know that doesn't make up for lack of hands-on boatbuilding skills, but at least now I can talk about it without sounding like an uneducated nincompoop.

Most of the outboards went out with Choppers in those days.

ludo73 12-05-2010 01:41 PM

choppers are not fast enough...i would prefer lightning or cleavers

302Sport 12-05-2010 01:46 PM

ludo.....how high are those motors on the 33??? looks like they are high by the size of the rooster tail...

ludo73 12-05-2010 03:09 PM

they were as high as possible, but now he lowered them!
he will maybe pull them up when he will replace these 300x by 300XS

Twin O/B Sonic 12-08-2010 06:34 AM

Steve 1.....

thank you sir for the education!!!!!!!!!! Last night I decided to research Powerplay and ended up here. I started reading then and other than a few hrs sleep, went non stop starting w/page 1.
I have been a twin O/B cuddy V-bottom guy from day 1.
I am 80% through restoring my second 24' Sonic. We weekend on the boat and love it's huge cabin. I keep looking at "what's next" and am not ready to go to 30' although thats about all thats out there w/what I want other than........., the 28' PP.
Unless I missed it, I didn't see much detail on them??? Weights, performance etc. Oh yeah, and cabin pix's ;)
I did read the production count of 12 which means I probably won't ever find one I can afford though.
I like what I have enough that I keep thinking if I had financial backing I'd love to build them w/todays materials/methods.
I worked for a local builder doing 28' ficshe botes in all infused balsa and would do same. Do you think a '2011 version of a 25/28 O/B hull/trailer would be north of $100K??
W/todays motors you could make either run great w/a single O/B while sipping gas or slide it over screw on a 2nd one and scare the bejesus out of your self while still having great economy and 5 yr warrantys!
Thanx again, Gary

You are very welcome, now to answer the question on the new hulls ,a quick trip through the 2011 beach show would tell the tale on the market and pricing.
