I haven't heard of any builder that is doing well in this market. How many others have closed in the last couple years? |
I was by the factory yesterday and it looks like Holland Township is going after them too for unpaid property taxes.

There in might lie the problem, even if the economy starts to recover. AFFORDABLE and PERFORMANCE BOATS is pretty much an oxymoron these days.
I personally believe a major price correction will have to occur in the performance boat industry if it is to ever recover to the levels enjoyed from around 96 to 2006. That price correction is starting in the used market, but has not made it to the new boat market. We see tons of complaints about the value of our used boats - thinking things will return to where they were a few years ago. I personally will not hold my breath. I don't think it is going to happen. Same will be true for the economic recovery, particularly the stock market. People will have to start trusting business leadership again for a full recovery. With all the crap coming to light these days, not sure anyone will be trusting business for awhile. It will take a long time to restore integrity. Not trying to be doom and gloom. I just think the last 5-6 years of tons of people getting into the performance market may have been the aberation. These times may be more normal going forward than we think. |

In the OSO classifieds I think your quote is coming true. A new 2010 Active Thunder 33 w/HO's built for 150K, a new 37 w/525's for 199K...... Those prices are what they are asking for used ones!

I heard there is a auction for the old PQ factory and property in Holland later this month

What do you think will happen to the molds, the product designs and manufacturing assets?
Could this be on oppertunity for the brand to come back? or a final blow? I wouldn't want to see Reggie get them. Please no PQ with a beak. |

If they would have just built and tried to sell boats the way they were, they likely would have had a chance. Instead they wanted to just sell 38' plus and re-tool the boat to make it something it was never meant to be in the first place. PQ's have always been considered a well built family boat. They made the guy happy with some speed and the women happy with a nice cabin. They always filled a certain part of the market
Instead they wanted to make them into a poker run boat. I personally am glad it happened to the new owners...they deserved it. Its called what goes around comes around. With them behind the controls PQ never had a chance. To bad for PQ itself though! |
And to think this thread started in October of 2005... A LOT has happened in 4 years

It's just a damn shame. They're great boats and the've been build right here in Holland where I live. There are tons of them on Lake Michigan and everyone who owns one loves them. They're built tough, ride nice, have suffcient speed to get to the beach quickly. Not to mention that thay have always been less expensive than many other boats in the same class. The PQ operation has seen too many issues with owners rotating in and out the door. By the time that the new owners got there, they had too much to recover from. The approach should have been to get products out into the market instead of trying to be a "Me Too" company and make high priced speed freak boats that nobdy can afford. Regardless, they didn't produce anything for 2 years. The business case will never work. I hope someone with good bsuiness sense pick up the tools and does something good with them. Its an end of an era in boating for Michigan.
We'll miss PQ. R.I.P. |
What models do you guys think would still sell well if someone were to pick up some of the molds?

Should have stayed with with the staples. 26, 29 and maybe the 38 (just because you gotta have a big gun) . If I recall the last time I had talked with someone there prior to Phill Hall they had sold more 26's and 29's then anything else. Like its been said before they never were nor were going to be fast ,simply a great all around do all boat with great lines. I never really understood the why manufactures felt the needed a 20,21,22,23,24,24 and so on sized boat in the line up. Spread them out a bit. Anyhow it will be interesting to see what becomes of the molds.
|
They should build a 23 or 24, a 26 or 27, a 29 or 30, and the 38. Dont think they had the best luck with the 34 anyway so kill it and the 28. This way they would only have 4 models to deal with. The other problem is powerboats seem to be dying off. They tried to build a Sport cruiser but with no real luck. They need to build a real Sport Cruiser like the 330 through 400SS that Formulas builds. They could build a 33, 36 and a 39, just to be a little different. It appears the sport cruisers are still somewhat selling. All this being said I dought any of it will happen, but it would be nice to see. It just I have owned 3 of these boats and truly feel they are a great boat and think it is very sad to see. Of course I bet allot of people feel the same about all the other brands that have gone away as well.
|
I agree, the sport cruiser would be a good boat for PQ to build. Right up their alley too since they know how to build acomfortable cabin, and well appointed boats with a solid hull.
|
So anyone know if the PQ property sold at auction today?
If so, who bought it? |
So what is the deal with PQ factory?
I was told by someone that it was being acutioned off so i posted it on OSO and tried to get some info on it for some people and then i could not get any info to back the romor i heard, so i drove by PQ and no signs or advertising odf a action at the factory so i thought that i got some bad info and know i heard a rumor today that there has been 2 actions in the last 30 days:confused: one for the property and one for the inventory. So does anyone know what is going or happened to PQ?:confused: |
any updates?

Everything will be up for auction soon, now what everything is might not be much.. We will see. Sad in deed, but PQ is truely no more. Tom |
Found this thread researching a boat company auction. This info/links may be of some help to pick a few things up.
Dec. 6th sealed bid auction for molds only - http://auction.orbitbid.com/moreInfo.cfm?ID=2214 Dec. 9th auction of everything else - http://auction.orbitbid.com/moreInfo.cfm?ID=2216 First and Last post. |
pretty cool to see all of the pics. now you can really tell how they tuck in some of the upholstery and install some of the hardware. no wonder you cant get at a lot of the stuff. the deck is not even set on the hull yet when they do it! i wonder what other manufacture was in there. there are a few that are not PQ unless they were trying to put something new together.
|
I have a hard time believing all this stuff is still in the plant, especially the 525 open on the crate, the two 525's still in boxes, the IT'S set up, the #6 drives etc
Unfinished hulls everywhere. My bet is these are older pictures of the factory and not an accurate reflection of the contents today. What a shame to see it parted it out this way! |
thats what the place looked like about 3 years ago when Phil gave Jeff (pqman) and I a tour...
I would think its still the same since Phil lost the place shortly after.. |

Hopefully out of storage and back in the slip, on the lift in about 45 days.
|
Hope to start getting mine ready towards the end of this month and on the lift by early April if this weather will help me out.
|
It is very likely I'll still be able to snowmobile in 45 days, in the UP at least...Our northern lakes will still be very frozen as well, unless things change a whole bunch
