New legend owner!!!

Well, this might have been the stupidist thing Ive ever done or the brightest..Did alittle internet shopping and purchased a 1994 Powerquest Legend 257 . Mind you this is a boat I had surveyed but have never seen. Ive been reading pages and pages of your forums and the powerquest seems like a quality boat so I took the plunge..The worst thing is that I wont even see the boat until April or May. Its in Illinios and Im in Washington. Didnt see the point in shipping it over here for the winter when its much cheaper to keep it at the dealer ($387 for 6 months of storage and that includes a shrinkrap!!).
454 EFI 385hp..Bravo 1 with 21 pitch Mirage plus prop..Manning tandem trailer and only 196 hours (if you can believe that!!)..Its going to be a really longggg winter!!

Congrats man!

I bought my first Powerquest in late August this year.

gonna be a long winter!

Congrats. I called on that boat a couple years ago. About the time we were going to head down and take a look someone put a deposit down. We ended up buying a 97 26 Legend from Great Lakes. Matter of fact I believe it was in February when I put the deposit down and had to wait 2 months before we could ever see it due to it was stored at another marina.
Best of luck, They are great boats! This one is our 2nd.

Congrats! It will make your winter long unfortunately, but it will be worth the wait.

Are you moving up or is this your first go-fast?

Congrats!!! During the winter, you can start to shop for accessories to match the boat (bumpers, ropes, swim suits, stereo upgrades, etc.).

PQ makes outstanding boats. I had a 96 270 Lazer with 502MPI, lots of room and a great ride. After that, shopped many different boats and ended up with a New 01 38 Avenger and LOVE IT!! Welcome to the PQ family!!

Re: New legend owner!!!

I would officially call this my first performance boat. I currently own a 1990 21 foot Mirage Trovare with a 5.0 litre but with a top speed of 45 miles per hour it leaves you yawning. I went to a poker run in september and after the run a guy there gave me a ride I will never forget--30 foot Daytona Eliminator with twin 650 hp blown viper v10's!! We hit 116 mph and I was smiling from ear to ear...After that I knew I had to step up to something faster so I started looking around on the internet and after looking at Baja's and Scarabs came across this Powerquest which seemed like a good compromise between quality and price (only paid $20k for the Powerquest!!).

Oh, a couple questions maybe a few of you can answer--trim tabs--this legend doesnt have them--are they needed?
Does anyone know what size the gauges are? I really want to upgrade the gauges to Lavorsi with blue bezels.
Definitely upgrading the stereo as well..MB quartz 12 " sub, 750 watt Kenwood amp, Kenwood CD player and 4 Marine Rockford Fosgate 6.5 inch speakers..Might even throw in a couple 6 x 9's as well.

Maybe NR will chime in. He owned a Legend. But my guess is tabs are not really necessary for a 26' boat. They are definitely nice to have on rough days though. A set of Bennetts can be had for about $500 I think. That's what I had on my 272 and they worked well.

I've got a set of of the dual ram Insta Trim on my 26. I did replace the bases with the larger 15" tabs last year. Other than the occasional rough water days, they pretty much stay in the up position. I beleive they do help out in the resale of the boat.

As for gauges, be sure to check out the Beede gauges. They will be half the price work as well for what you have and look great.

Congratulations on your purchace on your "new" boat. I hope my replies to your initial contacts were helpful. My friend had a Mirage 217 Intruder when I had my first Powerquest- actually a Powerplay 230 Conquest. As I told you earlier I've had that exact boat - a 257 legend- 454 Mag. Great boat! You'll have a better ride and more speed than your Mirage. I,ve also owned a '98 260-502 Mag and most recently a '03 260-496 Mag. Here's a picture of my last boat's dash with a new steering wheel and bezels.

Re: New legend owner!!!

Jus Roamn--Your replies were very helpfull and one of the reasons I decided to commit and buy the boat. What brand of gauges and steering wheel do you have (I really like the look)...
I shopped out some tabs and looks like the Bennett ST-12 would be a good fit for my boat (dual ram) and at $565 including next day DHL delivery and no tax doesnt seem like a bad buy..
Its going to be fun this summer--I will probably be the only person in Seattle on a powerquest (we've never had a dealer out here)..I'm glad to hear that there is a new owner of Powerquest and that they will start building boats again..I really would like to pick uip some shirts, hat, towels etc with the powerquest logo on them.
Thanks alot guys for all of your feedback and support!

Re: New legend owner!!!

Hello again Powerquest baby. The gauges and bezels were from Livorsi . The steering wheel is from CP Performance- A 2000 Infinium Steering wheel with polished spokes. Dino makes one like it but I've heard some of the holes don't line up without an adapter. As for shirts and keychains and other stuff ,there is a graphics shop just down the street from the PQ factory that can make anything you want. They still have a lot of stuff in stock. They have done work for PQ in the past. The name is Graphix in Holland, MI 616-396-0009. Good Luck!

Re: New legend owner!!!

I had a 95 257, 454 mag, loved the boat. I didnt have tabs, but I think they would help, the boat seemed to like to be trimmed out. or maybe it was just me.

I have a 2000 280 Silencer now, big difference in the ride, the 257 was very predictable, the 280 is a lot faster but is a little harder to handle.

all my pics are too large

Re: New legend owner!!!

Not Right. Go to microsoft and download a little free program called re-size it.

I've heard the same thing from a couple other 28 owners as to the ride compared to the 26.

Re: New legend owner!!!

Thanks guys..Im going to pick up one of the Infinium 2000 steering wheels and some Lavorsi gauges--cant beat that look for a few hundred bucks (well, maybe more than a few hundred but who's counting?). Think Ill probably try the boat out without the tabs first just to see if they are needed. I'm typically dealing with 3 foot waves here so we will have to see. From what Ive read it sounds like Im looking at a top speed of 62 mph with a Mirage plus 21 pitch prop. Would I still be ok with a 23 pitch that is lab finished? Would this get me up to 66 mph? Ive got a friend with a 2002 Nordic Heat (496 Mag HO) which does 66 mph and at least want to keep up with him. Also, how do I attach a picture so it shows up in the email versus being an attachment somone has to click on to open?

Hey congrats on the new boat! I had a 98 260 and it was a great boat! I had the mag carb motor in mine and I put Stainless Marine exhaust and a K&N filter and had my prop reworked from a 21 to a 22 and picked up a little top end. I would run at 62.7 gps at 5000 rpm's To get to 66 you might need to ad new exhaust and free flow air cleaner and a remap of the cpu. As far as tabs, I added them to my boat. I went with the bennett sport tabs the big dual ram set-up and added stainless marine mechanical indicators. You really do not need tabs on this boat as there is a built in wedge at the back. But they are nice to have for correcting any imbalance in load and to offset the prop torque.

Re: New legend owner!!!

Unfortunately I think you'll need a few more ponies to get the boat to 66 gps.

Re: New legend owner!!!

Thanks! Any suggestions on exhaust?
Hell, I havent even seen the boat in person yet (I put alot of trust in digital photo's and the surveyor--Hopefully not a huge mistake)..

Does anyone know what size gauges (actual size in inches) fit in the Legend? I want to order new ones now but since the boat is 1500 miles away I cant measure. Thanks

Gary C 11-30-2006 01:26 PM

Re: New legend owner!!!

As far as exhaust I like Stainless Marine. But, you will get a lot of different preferences here. As far as gauges I would wait till you have the boat and see how they work. I would save the money for exhaust and a remap and aircleaner. You should get about 63-64 with that boat with those mods. But everyone has different prioritys. I would really not do a thing to the boat till you have it spend put some time on it and live with it and then decide what you want to spend your money on. It must be tough waiting for you! :) Again, good luck with it!

Here's the thing--2 of the gauges have yellowed (tach and temp) so at a minimum I want to replace those two along with adding bezels and a new steering wheel. I want to order the things Im going to need so when the boat does arrive (May) I can install and hit the water. Im planning on mooring the boat in Lake Washington.

CP Performance is having a sale on white faced Auto Meter gauges and the come with free bezels. If you simply want to replace the couple you have I have a complete set that I took out of my 97. But to be honest if your going to change a couple you might as well do them all. If you put bezels on you've got to disconnect them anyhow.

Yes, I lived on Long Island my whole life. I was the last of my family still living there. My Dad is upstate in Harpursville which is north of Binghamton. My one brother lives in Las Vegas and my mom and another brother live in Florida. So I decided to move to Myrtle Beach:) The taxes and traffic were killing me. I love it down here. Of course it is all relative. The pay scale sucks here. But I did OK with my house up there and bought one here cash, so I can afford to make less. Of course the idea is to eventually make as much as I was, and then I will be really doing good! :) But for now my son is doing well in school. It is actually a very good school. The wife loves it here(she is from Jersey). And I love it too. I was riding my motorcycle two days ago in a tee shirt! I still don't have a boat since I sold the Powerquest. But for now I like having the bikes. I got my son a motocross bike and we are 15mins from a track and he rides every weekend. You only have time for so many toys! :)

Hey PQ Baby, I know exactly what you mean about the Faria gauges in your '94. I had the same problem with my speedometer and temp gauges on my 94 257. The smaller gauges are 2" and the Tach and Speedo are 3 3/8". I did the same thing to the dash on my '97 312 Formula. I replaced the stock recessed gauges with top mounted Hardin-Marine gauges from CP Performance. Good Luck!

Thanks! I had Scott Signs in Grandville, MI make a template (decal) and I put it on before I installed the new gauges.

Re: New legend owner!!!

I agree!! HUGE IMPROVEMENT over the stock dash--looks like a whole new boat. I just purchased blue bezels and am going to buy the '97 gauges from Fast Forward. Thats interesting that the tach and temp gauges on both '94 Legends yellowed. I also found a new blue Momo steering wheel from Extreme Marine for $130. Still need to buy new drink holders (blue aluminum) and a few things for the stereo and I may be done for this summer. Anyone know what size the drink holders are in a Legend? 3 3/8 or 3 5/8?

Fast Forward 12-02-2006 09:13 PM

Re: New legend owner!!!

PQ Baby, Make sure if you get a new stereo get one with the MP3 jacks and you can ditch all the cd's. Besides you can never listen to the cd's while under way anyhow. Also while youre installing all the bling check out the great deals Rex marine has on billet speaker grills.

Powerquest_Baby!! 12-02-2006 10:25 PM

Re: New legend owner!!!

Ive actually already got alot of stereo equipment for the PQ including a Kenwood deck with the MP3 input..I may be adding the corsa exhaust so ive got the option of listening to the tunes while underway--In the OSO classifieds there is a guy selling 4 of them (2 sets) for $500 total. I sent him an email to see if he would sell me 1 set for $250.
I will check out the speaker grills--can you tell Im in a bling mode??

Pete280 12-03-2006 07:58 AM

Re: New legend owner!!!

The drink holders should be the larger size, nice dash, I thought about redoing my dash but i'm into other boat projects at the moment.

Got that backwards there PB. The Corsa gets closed at slow speed so you can hear the radio. You should always open it before getting underway.

jus roamin, what an improvement! Nicely done!!

Here is an OT question for you guys. You know the grey raised dot plastic insets in our foot rests. You can just see the corner of one in jus roamin's pic above. Mine are starting to curl. Anyone know where PQ gets them?

Powerquest_Baby!! 12-03-2006 02:03 PM

Re: New legend owner!!!

Macklin, You are 100% correct under normal circumstances (corsa closed at slow speed). You would have to live in Seattle or be able to read my mind to know what I was thinking--I will be mooring the boat in Lake Union (in the heart of downtown Seattle) which is all no wake. You then have to go thru the "cut" which take you past the University of Washington--its about a 40 minute treck 1 way and all of it is no wake (puts a ton of low impact hours on your engine unfortunately) before you get out to Lake Washington where you can open it up. This is really where the corsa would benefit me. However, I received an email back from the guy who is selling the 2 sets of corsa and he is not willing to break up the 2 sets.
So, the correct drink holder size is the 3 5/8"?

Pete280 12-04-2006 02:46 PM

Re: New legend owner!!!

The drink holders are the larger size that Eddie Marine offers, not sure on the exact cutout size, but they only sell two sizes. I bought the smaller ones first then realized I needed the bigger ones.

Macklin, I think that is called decko-dot and West marine sells it but you have to buy 3 yards at 72" wide (around $100)

Fast Forward 12-04-2006 06:20 PM

Re: New legend owner!!!

I just purchased the decko-dot material and the dots that you see in the pattern are the size of a bb. Not the dime or quarter size raised dots like you have. I ordered it myself thinking it was the large pattern. I'm removing the carpet in the engine compartment and putting this stuff down. Should make for easy cleaning and more important (dry)..

What a waste. I only need two pieces about 5" by 18". I think I will just pull them out, heat them up and then compress them flat over the winter, and reglue them in the spring.

It was a biotch to get off, almost like they layed it wahen the glass was still wet. It's pretty rough, I would have to do some more work if I was covering it wth rubber.
