Silencer 280

Don't get me wrong, I really like PQ's! The 340 is a comfortable boat, great for overnighting and spacious and really well built. I boat on the lower Ches Bay, and most of the time the water is confused and snotty. The 280 was small enough to maneuver around. The 340 just pounds in 1' - 2's. I have had it out in larger water and it was just a bad ride. Before I bought my Top Gun, I rode LOTS of boats so I wouldn't make the same error. I found for ride quality in a 34ish size boat, Formula, Sunsation and especially Fountain - those boats rode well. For staying on the boat, the PQ is hard to beat. I highly recommend riding as many boats as possible before you buy. You owners of 340's, not trying to piss you off, but just giving my experience. I still think my 280 did better in the rough than the 340.
Also, if you need to access items in the 340 / 380 bilge, some items are not serviceable unless you remove a motor - which would be quite difficult as well.

BILLR you can't remember yesterday let alone what your 28 did way back in 2000/2001. There is something to be said about the center of gravity on the 32-26' range depending on boat and that is was affects the ride.
Besides, you can't even get your boat in your list correct. YOu DON'T HAVE A SCARAB you have a Wellcraft. Or maybe you consider a Fiat to be a Ferrari because they may have been designed by Pininfarina.
Man up.

Yeah, have to question comparing a 280 to the 340. Come on Bill. The 340 is a wave crusher compared to ANY 28 footer. Because it is a heavy 34. But it has a lot of freeboard to make for that roomy cabin, which is what negatively affects the ride.
Let's be honest here. The 340 really only has about 30' of wetted surface after you deduct the 3' swim platform and 12" notch. It is what it is...

Good info and read, thanks guys.
Another thing talking lengths of wetted area, the overall length of a 280 is 27'-7", deduct the 2 foot swim platform, and the 6"-7" notch and the wetted area of the 280 quickly becomes 25'.
I would have to think there would be no comparison in ride quality between the 2 boats base on length alone.

I guess you also forget the ride we both took in the 35' Fountain in 4' to 5' waves. We both had 340's and agreed that our boats couldn't do or ride like that Fountain.
Macklin remembers the trips we both took to chiropractors after riding in 2' of better chop. Don't have that problem in the Top Gun, 37 AT or my Scarab.
Don't forget, I love PQ's! But I did not care for the ride of my 340. I guess you trade speed for ride comfort. With lab bed 30's, I hit 80 pretty regularly.
If you are looking at a 340, ride it in a fair chop and see if it is for you.
