280 Silencer 496 HO?
Considering a 280 Silencer w/ a 496HO. Boat has the weekend package(fridge,sink,microwave,potty)
Want to use it for the occasional weekend trip to area poker runs. (watching only) What kind of speed/Rpms is this boat capable of when propped right? It currently has a 4 blade 23p REV 4 on it. Seems a little small. Maybe good for planing, but I bet its on the limiter on the big end, not to mention the prop slip I'm told I will experience w/ this hull. |
The 28 I had came with a 24p Bravo. A labbed 26 Bravo will give you more cruise speed.Top speed on mine was 67 maby 68 with ideal conditions.
|
Any experience w/ ride quality compared to a Baja 24 Outlaw? That was my last boat. Both have 24deg. hulls right? The 280 appears to be about 1200 lbs heavier.
|
The ride in the 28 is awesome!
|
I have a 502 in mine and I can run a consistent 65 with a 24p bravo1. I've read that going to a 1" or 1.5" spacer can help with the slip but I have not tried it yet. If you have not been on a powerquest do yourself a favor and check it out, you will be impressed with the size and ride quality. There are some on here that are running some good speed numbers with some engine upgrades, maybe they will chime in.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on it today pending water test. I've seen the boat and been in it, but haven't rode in it yet. I'm not really concerned about sqeezing every mph out of it on the top end, I was more concerned with finding a good quality boat that rides nice with a good low hour, larger factory power package. After looking at a couple 25 Outlaws and 272's I was pleased with the build quality of the Powerquest.
I'm very anxious and exicted to get this boat in the water and try it out. The step looks cool, but sounds like it may have a good and a bad side. Has anyone seemed to pinpoint or be able to feel a speed when the hull "breaks free" and starts to cruise more efficiently with less drag? |
I had a 2000 model with a 454 Mag. The drive had the spacer and with a 24p Bravo 4 blade it was fine unless it was loaded heavy. With 6 people and 100 gallons of gas it had trouble planning. I switched to a 22p Bravo 4 blade and holeshot/plane time was much improved. Had to watch the RPMs but I was not a full throttle kind of guy anyway. Loved the boat. Lots of room for a 28. Spent many nights on it. I added a marine A/C unit to it so sleeping was comfortable!! Good luck and enjoy!!

You will love it over the baja i think!! I have the 502 turning a 26p bravo 1 prop drop the tabs down before taking off comes out the hole fairly quick!! The main difference you will notice with the step over a regular V is taking curves it wont hook like a v is kinda slides. I find dropping the drive helps this maybe others can explain it better. But all in all awesome boat easy to trailer and dock and the room second to none
|
Don't tuck the drive and turn. Tucking the drive puts the bow down and transom up and can cause the boat to spin out if there is air already in the step.
|
Makes sense but keep in mind on a river not a wide open lake. I always drop my speed before tucking the drive. If this is not the best way what is?? That's my main complaint about the boat I'm used to a deep V and how they turn.

Same thing I do bump the trim and slow down.
|
you do not want to bump the drive down any lower than neutral while turning on a step bottom boat,,when you do this you bring the bow down and raise the stern, with the step and all the air produced by the step the rear of the boat is loose and the weight of the boat is now in the bow area and thats how step boat boats hook...just saying...

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm going to run it on the Ohio river on Wednesday. Can't wait. From the sounds of things I will be making a call to BB Blades to try a drive spacer and a 26 Bravo first thing this spring with their demo program.
Anxious to see how it does w/ the stock drive length and the 23p. Rev4 4blade thats on it now. Sounds like I will pickup a higher cruise speed, easier planing, and a few mph on topend w/ a spacer and 26 Bravo. Any suggestions on spacer size? I'm thinking 1.5-2"? Sounds like some are running a 1" and toying w/ the idea of going lower still. |
I'm running a 1 inch spacer. Never tried anything any lower. I almost feel like I lost speed with mine. I need to put a gps in the boat and see

What part of the Ohio you go to? I put in a Duffys in Jeffersonville and boat Louisville to up river.
Was owned since new by an older guy who just slowly cruised around. W/ the 23p Rev4 prop I was turning 4,000 rpms @ 30mph and only topped out @ 56mph Going back down th pickup the boat next week and already have a 26p Bravo ordered. ( The Rev4 is only 14.625 diameter compared to 15.25 on the Bravo) I was not pleased with the performance of the boat w/ the current prop, but I know it will be way better next time I run it. |

I bought it on a Consignment deal from Marine Sales and Service Guy only put 20 hrs on it since 09, so you wouldn't have had a good chance of spotting it. |
Congrats, you will love it......until you want a bigger one!

Good news made my day!
I was told by the consigning dealer that the owner didn't have the factory bimini top or the cockpit carpet. After a few weeks of screwing around w/ negotiations and water test I finally bought it. Then I got a call from the dealer saying the original owner just dropped off the bimini and carpet :) He had never used either one. The bimini we may use if rafting up for long periods, but I'm not sure about the carpet. Never had a boat that didn't have factory fixed carpet and was kinda looking forward to the easy clean of the bare FG floor. |
If you want to sell the carpet let me know.

I can crank the wheel hard in my 38 at high speeds and the boat carves like it is on rails. Just keep the power on and the nose up. Welcome to the family! |

This is gospel!

Welcome to the family! if the nose is up that means that your drives are NOT tucked in and the weight is in the back of the boat were it should be on a step bottom boat while turning,,, if the nose was down then your drives are tucked in and the weight is in the front and the stern is light and that is what causes them to hook and spin out... think we are on the same page,,,, have you found your next boat??? |
