No, decided it was best to have a different type of drive rather than the bravo drives that were on it.

I ended up finding a pretty good deal on some used Arneson Bravo Conversions that are needing of a severe refurbishing. I ended up setting the bottom of the boxes 1 inch below the running surface of the boat at the drive centerline.

Your not F'n around I see. I like the way you set the height, that should do it perfectly.

brian41 01-07-2014 06:06 AM

Jason,
Nice meeting you this past week. Everything looking good so far...keep it up, working outside must be a bit of a struggle this time of year (my office was 41 degrees this morning).

Rik,
How the F are you? I will be talking to you soon, I have another Arnie job starting in 2-3 weeks.

Jason3603 01-07-2014 07:30 AM

Hey Rik- Thanks, I followed your instruction to the letter. I was a little concerned I would have to fill in the notch; at first it was awfully deceiving judging the distance by eye. When I started measuring it out it started falling into place. There is no time to pu$$y foot around here since my stretch goal for completion is the end of April. I know it’s a stretch but everyone has to have a goal.

Thanks again for all your help I will giving you call to get the needed parts ordered. Is there any lead times that I should be aware of?

It was great meeting you as well. Thanks for the compliments. Also thanks for loaning me the tool to remove the retaining ring. It does really put a damper on progress being -14 degrees outside right now. A lot of the stuff I’m doing right now I can do in my heated garage and don’t need the boat for the most part. I’ve been trying to lease/rent a building but the cost in the Metro Detroit area is ridiculous for space the size I need. I do have a few leads hopefully something pans out.

It looks awesome Jason. Keep up the great work and keep the pics coming!

Next on the project list is to tear down and upgrade this set of 72C’s. Has anyone done any of the extensive mods themselves? Any suggestions may be helpful. I have an extensive amount of automatic transmission repair and engineering in my background, so this being a forward and reverse 1:1 trans shouldn’t be too big of a deal. I say that now before I get them apart LOL! I’ll get them torn down tonight and post some pics maybe tomorrow.

There's manuals available on line on these transmissions. They are fairly simple, (so they say) there are however a few tricks to making things better that only certain people know about.

Yes, it was a single carb on a 598CI. I am currently going thru the engines again to identify the valve issue I had. The new setup will be 598's with 420's and fuel injected. The reason for going with the 420's is they will bolt directly on my existing set up. At this point it is also a bit more cost effective rather than starting from scratch with new superchargers, chillers and intakes.

As far as drives I am looking at the x-powers or the SCX-4's. Waiting on this decision until we can get my buddies boat with the SCX-4’s dialed in.

Interesting..... ;-)

Jason, The Shark Hide stuff is what I use to keep things shinny. It closes the 'pores' in the metal or aluminum and makes the shine last longer. I got mine from Eastwood but it costs about $70.00 for a quart though. Let me know if you need help with anything? I have been putzin' around the lake on the sled lately and have time to come by via sled :):) We were just up at IT off Crescent Lake yesterday for a break and usually lake hop all around the area to the different stops............ Your rebuild is looking awesome. Keep Up the Great Work!!!!!!! Bill

Hey Bill- Thanks for the compliments. I am seriously like 3 blocks from the IT. We frequent there a few times a month. If you want to stop by and check out what I've been up too you are more than welcome. I will shoot you a PM with my number.

Sounds like a blast lake hopping on the sleds. I haven’t been out on my sled since last year, been pretty busy with other things.

Jason3603 01-10-2014 04:38 PM

Hey Guys- Thought I would throw this out there for discussion, maybe a little brain storming. I'm building a set of custom water pickups. They will be constructed out of mandrel bent U shaped stainless 1.5” O.D with a 1.375” I.D with a wall thickness of just over a 1/16 of an inch welded to a plate that will incorporate the drain plug. I want to use a one piece tube with no adjustability if I can get away with it. When I was at the Miami show last year I seen a several boats (mostly on Skaters and Cigarettes) with U shape pickups with no adjustability. My question is; what is the suggested placement or is adjustability absolutely needed for the proper water pressure? Is there a rule of thumb guideline for this? I've installed pickups in the past on a few different boats but always had to massage the tube length to get correct water pressure, the placement was never correct on the first try.

You could always run a dump with an adjustable pressure relief valve.

I do plan to run an air bleed setup off the strainer to bleed excess air, but was thinking of running an 15-18 psi valve. Do you have experience with running this type of setup? If you have, can you tell the pros and cons of this?

This is the last you will see of these gear breaking Bravo's! Now that Arneson's are going on! I can't wait until it's all together to see what it is going to be like. I don't know of another BT out there with Arneson's on it, as far as I know this is the first one.

I have not used an air bleed but did use a Keith Eickert pressure relief valve. I was able to dump enough water to keep the pressure at 18 psi at over 115 mph.

Thanks for the info. Where did you place the pressure relief valve?

Jason3603 01-12-2014 02:42 PM

So... I got the transmissions torn down. Pretty much what I expected them to be. I purchased these transmissions as cores so all in all they are in ok shape. They seemed to of either sat outside or ingested water at one point. There's a lot of rust inside, no biggie. Tear down is always the easy part. Now for the clean, inspect, do a little machine work and re-clean part of the process. As for the mods I would like to do I am still in the preliminary stages of this. Right off the bat there are a couple things that I didn't care for.

I have seen quite a few run off the back side of the intake manifold. Supposed to help with steam pockets and provide some extra flow to those cylinders that tend to suffer from lack of water movement.

Jason3603 01-20-2014 09:00 AM

Well.... I got a lot of work done this weekend on the drives and strainers. I cut the tube to 18 inches for strainers, now just have to mock it up in the boat to see if it's taller than I want and layout where all the fittings will be welded. I will post some pics next week when I get back from a business trip.

johnnyboatman 01-23-2014 08:29 PM

love these threads, that things gonna fly, im glad you went to bigger blowers with dual carbs, I always feel as single carbs on big ci engine seem to hold back power.

Thanks. The single carb deal was just temporary to get me back on the water. The new motors will be fuel injected running 8, 93 lbs injectors with dual 4150 style throttle bodies.

Making some progress! I just got the brass parts of the trim and steering components back from the chrome shop. They turned out extremely well.

Looks great. I never thought to chrome the steering bracket. Looks really good.

offshorexcursion 02-11-2014 10:54 AM

Wow those turned out PERFECT!

Jason3603 02-13-2014 09:44 AM

Thanks guys!

Rik- A buddy of mine and I were shooting the sh!t in the garage one night as I was packing the parts up to go to the chrome shop for the next day, he said don’t forget these. Talking about the steering brackets and I said sure why not. So, that’s how that came to be, last minute decision.

It's coming along slowly. Boxes are finally in primer. They were in poor condition due to, in my opinion, neglect.

Jason3603 04-28-2014 03:01 PM

Sorry guys have not been on here on a while. I've been busy in the garage working on this thing. If I'd quit changing plans it would be done. Hoping to go to dyno in a week or so. The latest change on the engine was to get rid of the distributor and go coil on plug. This opened up a whole lot of new gremlins for me to figure out. I decided to go with AEM smart coils and a 58x crank trigger and thing in working on figuring out is the cam sync. Since in using a 58x crank trigger it needs a 4x cam sync. They are not off the shelf so I need to build one which we are doing now. I'll keep you posted.

Jason3603 05-12-2014 01:15 PM

I made a little progress with the cam syncs. They turned out pretty good imo. Just an FYI the used cam sensor is for mock up purposes only.

Here is the sea strainer we have built. It is 18 inches tall and 5 5/8 diameters. It has a solid o-ringed lid. I just need to figure out where I am going to place the inlet and outlet orientation.
