24' Outlaw 575sci Build
I pulled my mildly modified (heads / cam / 10:1 compression) .030 454 from my 24’ baja outlaw prior to storage with some plans to upgrade this winter. Plan is to basically build a 575sci like engine with the specs below. I would love to the group to chime in with concerns / suggestions as this is the first marine engine I am putting together. (Sorry I tried to post links to the parts but I guess I am too new, once I hit the 10 post mark ill put up the links to the parts and images of the engine)
454 block bored to .060 over Ross Racing Forged Pistons 82017 ~7.5:1 compression Crane Hydraulic Roller Camshafts 169621 Manley BB-Chevy H-Beam Connecting Rods 6.135" Scat Forged Standard Weight Crankshafts 4-454-4000-6135-L re using Dart 15200030 heads (119cc chamber) heads on engine now. Stock 575sci blower Super chiller intercooler A1000 Fuel Pump Young performance 575sci Injection plate Questions…? What is everyone using for a lift pump? Thoughts on keeping the stock stroke (468) vs stroking to 496? Who is flashing 575sci ECU’s for modifications? Are most people running wideband 02’s to monitor af? Anyone running smaller blower pulleys? what boost are you seeing? where is the stock knock sensor located on a 575sci? |
I would bump the compression a little personally...the 7.5:1 is a really conservative mercury number...I'd go to 8:1 but that's just me...that's about all the advice I can give lol
gonna be a sweet setup!! post up some pics!! miss seeing the blower setup when I go into my spare room hahahaha |
Generally I would not go below 8:1 on automotive application but figured the extra load on the engine would warrant the slightly lower compression? Thoughts?
-Nick |
I'm at 8.2:1 on mine with an 8-71...and being a smallish blower for that motor bumping the compression will compensate for the size of the blower....at least that's how it was explained to me when I was gonna use that blower lol
|
Makes sense, I have been running 93 with the 454 that came out of the boat, what kind of boost were you able to run on 93? Do these ECU's pull timing if knock is detected?
-Nick |
well to be totally honest I haven't had it running long enough to honestly answer that...I saw 5 at wot but then I had some valve issues..i also changed the pulleys when I just put the motor back in to up it a little...I'm shooting for 8 lbs which is what was recommended by the builder and some people on here...hopefully others will chime in with some other opinions

Have people had any issues running the A1000 pump ? I would be also plumbing in a return line so hoping vapor lock will not be an issue ?
|
Eddie can tune your ECM. I would use a Weldon 1100A pump instead of the Aeromotive. Much better pump for the same money. Mount it low in the bilge and return fuel back to the tank. no need for a lift pump. On my 575 with Brodix heads, I saw about 5# boost with the stock 4" pulley, about 6# with the 3.5" and 7# with the 3" pulley. I had my rotors teflon stripped and picked up 1#. I ran the 3.5 most of the time because the belt tended to slip a little on the 3". The knock sensor mounts low on the port side of the engine block, ECM will pull timing if it detects a knock.
|
Yeah Eddie actually put a tune on the ECM based on what we discussed when I bought the injection plate, we will have to see how close it is once I take the boat out. In terms of fuel pump I am looking at the weldon DB2025-A, think that will work well with the set up.
|
I put Eddies injection plates on my 575's in my 353 Fastech. He wasn't able to nail the tune down remotely, so I ended up having to tune it myself. I have it just about dialed in, it's been a learning curve for sure. Put an O2 bung in each header, these motors are pretty bad at evenly distributing fuel side to side. I have seen almost a whole ratio difference side to side at certain rpm's, and you don't want to tune to the lean side.
|
thanks for the feedback, I am semi familiar with tuning efi from an automotive standpoint with multiport injection, but the plate with the mefi3 might be a whole other ball game. Depending on how far the tune is off I might just swap in an AEM infinity since I am already running the AEM CD7 digital dash.

Sweet !! That's some big iron hangin back there.

Did you order you SCX drive yet :ernaehrung004:

A buddy mounted an 750hp blower engine in front of an imco in a 24 Baja a couple of years ago -- i went on the first ride --- we got up to 80 mph and i was like take me back to the dock! That thing rolled on its side with the Torque from the single... After that summer the engine was removed and a stock 454 was put back in to sell. He didn't want the liability of selling to someone the way it handled...
I hope yours works out better for you, maybe you are in an area that is calmer than Lake Erie and it will handle more appropriately! |
Hello
Congratulations an this great project ++ To install my Mercury 500 EFI on my Baja 24 Outlaw, I had to cut behind the back seat !!! --- |
Thanks for the replies! Scx is on the list, and hoping with the ITS and 280s it’s manageable. I won’t be going full out most the time, and the lakes in upstate NY are pretty calm. I figured I would have to do some cutting to get the engine to fit, should be finding out how much in a couple weeks.

Nice work! If I might suggest one thing though. Ditch the adjustable motor mounts and go with a true offshore style mount. Why? Anything that can be adjusted will eventually drift out of adjustment - causing problems.
|
I am with you, offshore mounts were my first choice but the 24 OL has super narrow stringers and I could not find a offshore mount that would fit. So the plan is to box the stringers with 1/2 aluminum brackets and use the mounts in the pic, once drive is aligned cut some SS sleeves that go over the threads on the bottom part of the adjustable mount so even if the lower nuts starts to walk over time it will rest on the sleeve. If the engine does need to come out over time its time for a 1071 !
|
Took a little time to get the engine mounts in. Could not find an offshore mount narrow enough for the 20” stringers so this should do…

Technically the engine is in but still need to align. Teaser for now.

Did you have the thermostat housing powdercoated or is that paint? I'm trying to find a powder that matches the Merc blue.

Impressive work and cool build! Brings back a lot of memories when I did my 25 outlaw. That’ll be a fun boat when your done!

Beautiful work and attention to details!
But I agree with Delsol, Be careful, a friend had a built 540 in his and that might have been the 2nd scariest ride I've been in over 80. |
