Preventive Maintenance On '87 21 Merc Cruiser
Just bought my first "offshore type" boat and since I don't have all the maintenance records, I'm going to do a little preventtive maintenance myself. One thing about me though is that I would rather spend a little more to get the best quality product out there which brings me to my questions. All opinions and comments welcomed.
Fist, the boat is a 21 Foot Scarab 1 with the 350 Chevy small block Merc Cruiser engine in it.
1) Best oil and filter to run?
I run Mobile 1 full syn in all my cars, and was thinking of the first oil change in this boat to be a syn/blend then a full syn the next time.
2) Best weight of oil to run?
This boat will mostly be run in the Chesapeake Bay. Mostly crusing speeds when in the bay and usage will be about two to four times/month.
3) Best Spark plug brand to run?
Plug wires are brand new (less than 1 year) as probably are the plugs, but this is an easy/cheap little thing I can do. I know this is a whole can of worms; but some reccomendations would be nice.
4) I'm not sure if I have a hydrolic tranny (I think I do but I'm not 100%) If so, any better brand of tranny fluid?
5) Brand of fuel/water filter and numbers I should pick up for this engine?
6) Any other preventative maintenance anyone can suggest would be great.
Like I said this is my first "offshore" type boat; and my first I/O. Most of my boats were outboard Glastrons.
Thanks in advnace for the help!
