Re: "Old School Scarab Race Boats"?
Nothing like the "Old School" boats but I like the
"Old School" fro's with what quite possibly could be a pair of "Old School" blue corduroys to match the boat. Gotta love it.  |

Re: "Old School Scarab Race Boats"?
ChiTown-
I bought a Scarab from a gentleman from Florida, and remember him saying 'there is a rumor this was Betty Cook's boat- If I could prove it, I would ask a lot more for it'. I was primarily interested in the boat because it was a Larry Smith Scarab in full race configuration, not really considering the possibility.. I bought it home and noticed stenciled lettereing that had been painted over. One day I got the bug to read it, and saw an O, then OO then OOK then BETTY COOK. I talked to John Connor and Larry Smith, both of whom verified the boats origin. Betty raced her for about 2 years as KAAMA, then 2 years as Michelob Light. She sold her to Ron Hirschberg, who ran her as Revenge. She was then donated to a charitable organization, then sold to Ed Medley in Florida. The hull is Kevlar/epoxy/Carbon fiber and is in very good condition. It is a full stagger setup, with #3 speedos and crashboxes. I have new fuel tanks, with fresh 540's waiting to go in once I get finished with some work in the engine bay. It sits on the original Target trailer, all in all everything is pretty close to original- no hatchet work was ever done. I recently found a plastic pouch in a trailer toolbox with a registration in Mr. Hirschbergs name from 1993 or so. I am indexing all the entries in the book Searace as part of an effort to fully document the history of the boat. I never owned something this significant, and can only explain that when I stand behind the wheel I can hear the thunder of races past. I also made a promise to Ron Hirschberg's wife to 'make her beautiful' and am getting there inch by inch. Bulldog aka Ronnie |
Re: "Old School Scarab Race Boats"?
