Mr. Terrible Has now been retired. it rests in Las Vegas in the stable with all the Herbsts other toys. That boat is Legendary and won 4 Catalina' s Pulling Kurt Schoen With Some 572's By Curt Hooker.
Satisfaction, What a bad ass boat! Runs catalina every year with Mike Magin and carson Brummett. The boat is actually a dark dark blue.
The Edelbrock "Imperial Palace" Was an Amazing Boat, there are a nice pair of BBC Gentry turbocharged engines at the bottom of that channel.
Valvoline boat is still on the west coast last i heard it was for sale.
Of all the old Scaraab's Mr. Terrible is my favorite. There is no other boat more intimidating, a big red scaraab with mr.Terrible down the side truly a legend.

Skiracer, I have to give the nod to Satisfaction over Mr Terrible. It's a personal opinion but those mechanically injected engines in Satisfaction are just too sweet. Mike says injection has better throttle control than carb engines. Only really important when pulling top 10 skier but he swears by it.
I used to know what happened to Powerboat Mag special but having trouble remembering. Will try to tap those old brain cells and let you know.

jody165, they are both bad ass boats. Carbs work just fine for catalina if you have an 80mph boat with the right set up you can win catalina. unless it is ridiculously rough, then injection might work better. But then again what can compete with EFI.
CHITOWN; i have some old pics of Mr.Terrible back when it was black and some of the EDELBROCK. Will get them to you guys

It was the day before the Bushmills race on the 17th and all the boats were covered for the night. I remember so well, becuase I won the race the next day. Post number 30 on this thread has a shot of Betty and me running next to each other at the start of the race.
An interesting aside, is that both boats had just returned from being shipped back to the port of Miami from Argentina. The World Championship had been held in Mar Del Plata Argentina in December of 1978.
All of our boats were shipped down on the same ship from Miami to Buenos Aires and then we had to tow them 250 miles south to Mar Del Plata. The same deal with the return of the boats to the USA.
The exception was Bill Elswick's Cigarette, which sank during the race. He and his crew were rescued in their life raft by a passing freighter just before dark and brought to Buenos Aires.
The other shot was at the Bacardi race in Miami in 1977 from the bridge used as the dry pits in front of the Four Ambassadors Hotel. Joey is on the left, Richie Powers in the middle and Bob Beich on the right. Sorry to say I didn't win this one, I broke an engine mount halfway to Bimini at about the same point Bill Elswick broke too....we idled back in together on one engine in each boat and it only took about 5 hours.
This is the same Richie Powers who was with Tom Gentry for many years, including the final race, where they were both trapped in the boat after flipping in Key West. Tom died later of the injuries.
These 38's were great boats in rough water. All these boats and the Cigarette Top Guns came from the original 35 Cigarette..... which Don Aronow said was his best design ever.
Nice to see the interest in them and the history of the sport is still alive.
