Thanks- its getting there. Jeff- good hearing from you- did you buy that 300 or did you give it back?

I got the old cable out and ordered a new one- got my hatch actuator today, so I have something to do this week while I am waiting for the cable. Of course now that I think about it, I always have something to do- its just whether or not I want to do it:evilb:

capone550 06-10-2009 12:05 AM

Scottie,

Nice boat. You have truly done what was once a common thing to build your own boat. Now everyone just buys them, go figure. The result is that less people know about their boats. I'd say what you have done is the modern approach to building your own boat. Nicely done. I just read the entire thread taking about 2 hours. I'm just glad you got 'er in the water by the last post. I don't think I'd be able to take the suspence!

What paint did you use?

For graphics on the hull, are they from Wellcraft?

PPG Basecoat/ 7 coats of clear. Still have to clear over the graphics and buff the whole thing- but I have to give my boy Tommie credit- he laid it on so smooth it looks good now- should look like glass after we cut and buff. The downside to automotive paint is it is only good for 72 hours in the water- but I have owned the boat for five years and this is the first year it has seen water so I don't think it will be a problem:evilb:

I never leave my boats in the water- I hate to clean-

The graphics were done by my friend, Ken Fuhrer, who does graphics for a living, and I believe they are similiar to the new Wellcraft logo- but changed slightly for copyright reasons.

Got the hatch actuator installed today- even did the wiring and it works!!! I know, I know, hard to believe, but its true.:daz:

scottie150 06-21-2009 07:41 PM

Update-

Replaced both engine wiring harnesses, replaced the starboard throttle cable, installed the hatch actuator and wired it, checked all the wiring, and rewired everything that was halfassed- pretty much buttoned everything up.

Pulled it out of the shop and hooked up water to test everything, port engine lit off and ran fine, good oil pressure, tach is still erratic. Starboard engine will not start. Turns over but no joy. Checked to see if I have spark, no spark. Rechecked all the wiring, its all correct. Swapped coils, still no spark. Checked to see I have 12V on the coil when turning the engine over and everything checks good- so I am down to the distributor, pretty sure its the module in the distributor. Parts run tomorrow-:angry-smiley-038: The joy of old boats....

Don't get frustrated! A project of this size is bound to have quite a few kinks! Stay positive!

It was the distributor. Changed out the module and it started right up. Water test tomorrow- I will get video!!!:lolhit:

Great! something simple. Now get out there and run this thing. Me and others have been on the edge our seats for the last 3 1/2 years.

This is also one of the best threads on OSO, and thank you for sharing all or you hard work with us. :Score-101010:

Thanks Rookie- it means a lot. Tonight we cracked the beer- she did 64 on GPS @ 5000, so I am happy with that. She also made it back to the trailer under her own power. Still got a slight leak coming from somewhere, and a couple of stupid things to fix, but for the most part it is done and usable- thanks everyone on OSO for the support and help over the years. :party-smiley-020:

Holy chit...that thing is fast....(compared to mine) what props are you running?

areyouliving 06-25-2009 01:33 PM

Woo Hooo!! Congrats Scottie. What a long time coming!!

64mph is pretty damn good. Yeah what props are you running?? I've got 23p Mirage's and my best so far is 59 @about 4100rpm.

Bill

scottie150 06-25-2009 03:32 PM

The props are 21 pitch- non name brand, and they don't match- so its what you call major backyard performance:drink:

I'm thinking about using a sharpie and writing Hering on them- probably pick up a couple of mile of hour!!! (I am not bashing on Hering, by the way)

areyouliving 06-25-2009 04:02 PM

I tried writing 700SCI on my engines, Didn't work. Must have used the wrong color.

502ss 06-25-2009 08:39 PM

Scottie, that's great! Congratulations....

So what kind of horsepower do you think those engines are making?

Good question- 400, maybe 420 I really don't know. I can't lie because all you guys know what I'm running:party-smiley-004:

I know it sucks fuel like a top fuel dragster though:evilb:

Scarab Billy 06-26-2009 08:32 AM

ld be easier to work on outside. The other thought is to take it and have it media blasted, my friends tell me there is a place in town that does Corvettes so it is ok on fiberglass, and for the cost of labor and sandpaper vs. just starting over it's almost a wash. Anybody got any thoughts on this or have you done it? I am going to try and pull the lower unit off the port drive to send it out to weld- so I will shoot some more photos tomorrow. Thanks everyone for the input!!! :D[/QUOTE]
If you are going to have it soda blasted (less pitting) make sure you wash the whole thing with water and vinager and let it sit in the sun before you start any paint work......trust me the primer or sealer will blister

You are gonna need a lot of horsepower with those downriggers!!!!!:evilb::evilb:

Media Blasting Vs Soda

SODA BLASTING IS THE ANSWER. HAD MY 29 MIRAGE OFFSHORE DONE AND IT HAD 20 YEARS OF BOTTOM PAINT. YOU WOULDN'T KNOW TODAY THAT IT WAS BOTTOM PAINTED.
LET ME KNOW AND I WILL SEND YOU SOME BEFORE AND AFTERS.
THE PROCESS IS SO GOOD BUT SO DELICATE THAT THE GUY THAT DID MINE SAID HE CAN STRIP PAINT OFF THE VEHICLE AND IT WILL NOT DAMAGE THE GLASS OR SEALS.

The weird thing is everything else is ok in the engine compartment( the transom, stringers, starboard engine). The starboard engine starts and runs fine- however it has a exhaust leak on the side that is impossible to get to, so I have pretty much decided to yank that one too-seems like it would be easier to work on outside. Well..... I did get the foam for the rear hatch- and started shaping on it, not a easy or fun job. I still have quite a few things to fix- mostly stupid stuff like the hooking up the power steering pump- and tightening the starboard alternator belt, etc.

My plan this week is to take it out on the lake next weekend- so I have a reason to get motivated and fix everything. I will try to get some video so you guys don't think I am a complete loser:popcorn:

tackledackle 08-05-2009 11:14 PM

I just read the entire post.

Man... all I can say is WOW! What a sweet Scarab. And you spared no expense! Are you sure you want to put it in the water? It can only get worse from here! :lolhit: jk

Maybe I missed it, but what's her name?

I tell you what comes to mind for me... "ALL OUT!!"

better yet... "ALL IN!!!" :evilb:

There have been quite a few names over the years- most of them have "POS" somewhere in the title:lolhit:

Here are some pics from last weekend- Its funny that the pics that I took of a couple of hot blondes on the deck during the race somehow mysteriously came up missing(wife) but all the photos of me on the boat are magically still there- and before anyone says anything yes that is my mom- and she loves it-:coolcowboy:

No- not for a while. Got a bunch of stupid things I still have to fix- and I don't have the motivation lately to work on it. How about you?:waffen093:

areyouliving 09-16-2009 06:31 PM

No motivation? What's wrong is the weather getting cold up there already?

I was out for a local poker run a couple of weekends ago. It was my first and what a blast. There's another run coming up in a couple of weeks and then Fleet week down in the SF Bay. I keep hoping to get down the coast to do a Catalina run but time and money have been keeping a tight grip.

I keep looking at your windshield and want one bad. Or at least something different than what I have. it dates the boat too much.

Go drink a Red Bull and get krackin!
Heres a couple of pics from our run. Thats mine in the middle

Scottie,

I keep forgetting to ask, Where did you get the windscreen or who made it?

How is everything else going?
